Haaaaaaaaave you seen our posts this week? Monday we had a guest post by Jackie. She seems pretty cool. Cooler than anyone else who hasn’t submitted an article about grabbing life by the balls, competing even when nervous, and kicking ass, at least. She added me as a friend on the old facebooks, and now I see that she’s competing AGAIN this weekend at USAW University Nationals in Tennessee, so let’s wish her well and hope for an updated post from her in the near future. Anyone else competing? Seek and Destroy, friends.

On Wednesday, Brian had an in-depth interview with powerlifter Carlos. Brian is a quiet but valuable part of the team behind the scenes here at 70sBig. He makes sure our social media junk is up to date and every once in awhile, photoshops ridiculous pictures of everyone but me. He showed off his writing chops in this interview, and I think it was pretty damn good. It’s long, but worth the read. You guys really seem to enjoy these interviews, so we have a few more coming. Tsypkin is still working on a 2 or 3 part series of interviews with Niko Hulslander, so hopefully that will be ready to publish in the next week or two. I am also working with AC on a whole slew of upcoming articles that don’t include pictures of his butt. Or do they?

Tsypkin didn’t receive enough questions this week to warrant a Q&A, but Mike scoured the internet (facebook and the comments sections of the posts) and made another very helpful video. Watch it, tell your kids and doctor to watch it, and enjoy. Keep asking questions on the facebook page. Apparently these guys like it.

Now, I have some homework for you guys and gals. Some of you (most?) are relatively new to our humble section of the internet (just kidding, we’re not humble, we’re fucking awesome). It’s time for a flash-back. Read this post:

http://70sbig.com/blog/2010/08/the-70s-big-face/

Homework Part 1: Give us your favorite quote out of that article. Mine: “Fucking Brent.” It just makes me laugh, what can I say? Fucking Brent.

Homework Part 2: Take a pic. Send it to submissions@70sbig.com with the title “This is my 70sbig Face” or something funny. I will take the best ones and put them on the site.

I thought of this a couple weeks ago when I was supporting a couple of my lifters at the NAS Texas Strongest Man contest and saw our buddy Ryan Carrillo . He aimed his Canon and 17-40L in my direction, and without really thinking, here’s what happened:

This is just how I walk around now. It’s fine.

Last week, I talked about the lifestyle we choose to live. We lift heavy things and we have a damn good time doing it. This face helps show the world just how ridiculously awesome we are, so send me your best shots, and I’ll post them up. (Make sure they are less than 1MB each, please. Do you know how much a MB of storage costs in the 70s? Prolly about a hundred.)

To get us started on PRs, our buddy Brooks Conway, a notable young 181lb IPF equipped lifter, sent in this video of a recent 600×1 Raw Deadlift.

CrossFitters take note: He pulls 600 raw, with some bumpers…and doesn’t DROP it. K? He also recently raw squatted 495×3, which happens to tie what one of my 181’s is squatting this Saturday, and benches 365 for raw doubles, so…everyone, get stronger. The bar is high around here. Even if you aren’t there yet, get stronger every week, and keep us in the loop! Post your PRs, do your homework, take your vitamins, and have a stellar weekend.

Look, I get it. I’m “that guy.” It’s fine. I wear obnoxious tank tops in public. My beard scares strangers. I challenge crossing guards to front-double-bi-pose-downs. I trap slap my “friends” until they have bruises.

Yes, he PR’d.

I wear short shorts, and I yell “TEARDROP!” at awkward moments in romantic comedies.

I completely deny having ever gone to a single romantic comedy.

I’m not going to apologize for having fun, especially while lifting things up and putting them down. And neither should you. Next time you go to the gym, recreate this scene during your warmups. You’ll be a better man/woman for it:

And if not, well, hopefully you don’t get kicked out.

This week, Aaron wrote another article that I personally thought was fan-fucking-tastic. Some people probably didn’t think so. Those people aren’t having enough fun. The point of this site is to help each other get stronger, leaner, meaner, and more awesomer, just like our long lost brothers did back in the 70s. Think they apologized? Nope.

This site has become an awesome community, and continues to evolve into something bigger than Justin or any of us ever imagined when it was launched. We get more daily hits than ever before, and our sphere of influence continues to grow. Hell, big ol’ Mark Bell even mentioned us this week on his youtubes (if you don’t follow his selfie-vids, do it now – he’s full of great info and stupid hats). Take pride in being a part of this group, and make sure you comment here, especially on PR Fridays like today. Stop lurking, and start contributing. If you’d like to keep a workout log or ask questions, you can join the LiftHeavyShit forums (NWS, duh), or hit us up on facebook. Tsypkin answers questions every Thursday, mostly about CrossFit and Olympic Weightlifting. This week, Mike took a huge chunk of time to answer every question he could find on the facebooks in this video:

(thanks to user cwhite for making a table of contents in the comments section!)

We might all be jackasses, but we’re here for you. Keep the questions, comments, and PRs rolling in!

PR Friday, 15 Mar 2013

This week in 70sBigVille, we discussed how, like it or not, CrossFit is impacting the strength world in big ways. Not only are there a million more ladies wearing Lulu tights, there’s also a huge spike in the interest of weightlifting as a sport. Tsypkin wrote up a good post, then trolled a bit imo, and a good time was had by all. Or most, at least. Maybe. Continue arguing below if you think that’s a productive use of your time (vs. more curls).

On Wednesday, Mike B wrote up an interview with Mike Jenkins, large human and competitive Strongman. Strongman as a sport represents a lot of what 70sBig is all about – moving around heavy things and having fun doing it. Mention your latest feats of strength in the comments. I’ll be at a SM contest in San Antonio tomorrow cheering on some brothers. If you know of any events in the near future, mention those, too, and I’ll award you multiple bonus points. These interviews are getting a good reception, so I hope you’re ready for next week – Tsypkin scored a discussion with Niko. Boom.

Pink Chucks and some ridiculously huge yoke? CHECK.

A few weeks ago, we had a 2-part series of Articles by Bert and Marijke (Part 1, Part 2). Bert was kind enough to send me an update, because they’ve both competed again since then. How many times have you competed this year?

Hey Jacob, Thought I’d keep you informed.

Last Saturday Marijke and I competed again and she did 72,5 (2,5KG PR) – 35 (matched previous meet PR) – 80 (10 kg PR).

Right after the first Platform was done, a judge DEMANDED that she tried extra-wide sumo and she pulled 90kgs x 2 (so a 20 kg deadlift PR in a month!)

Here’s the compilation of our lifts. Her training changed slightly and she also lost 2 kilograms between last contest (2nd of February) and this one (2nd of March), weighing 53,3kgs last Saturday.

Kind regards and lots of courage for your lady friend and her training as well!

THIS.IS.AWESOME! I love this stuff. Guys and gals, please keep sending me updates like this. I love it. Also, if anyone wants to come yell at me in foreign languages, I’m pretty sure it’ll add 50 pounds to my total. Thanks ahead of time.

If you haven’t yet, check out the forums at LiftHeavyShit.com. I started it with a buddy of mine after a long night of drinking (and some lifting) and it has evolved into a not-terrible place to keep your log and/or stalk Patrick Stroup’s every lift/meal/BM. We have competitive CrossFitters, Strongmen, PLers, and weightlifters from all around the world keeping their logs and there and posting mirror pics after bench/chins supersets, and not a whole lot of shits are given, nor jimmies russled. Enjoy.

My twin brother, Kittensmash, finally texted me a pic I could safely post on the internet.

It’s PR Friday! Here’s some media from last week’s Arnold NAPF Raw Challenge to get you inspired over the weekend.

AC’s log is consistently the most popular on the site. This comes as no surprise once you see his intensity on the platform and his constant interaction with his fans. Check out his write-up on the Arnold (there’s a surprise ending), and this video of his lifts:

Mike B also had a good meet at the Arnold and did a write-up on his training log. Check out his video here, and subscribe to his often-updated YouTube channel while you’re at it:

Matt Nolan finished second in his class and damn near pulled 733lbs. What do you think he’ll hit at Nats?

Big Chris has been real, real busy since the Arnold, so I haven’t seen any log updates or a video of his lifts…but at least he squats deeply:

Marc wasn’t extremely pleased with his meet, but I was happy to see that he finished strong, posted some great stories about the Arnold, and perhaps most importantly, got a stellar picture of the crew with the legendary Ed Coan. I’m jelly. You jelly?

Matt Baller hit a new IPF World Record bench…twice. Here’s the bigger of the two:

Jennifer Thompson blew us all away again with a very impressive meet, including a PR squat and dead, and chipping her own World Record bench to 137kg/302lbs (@ the 2:00 mark in the video). Amazing.

USAPL’s website has been updated to include the Arnold results, along with a database of 2012 Lifter Rankings. Check it out.

In the Pro Deadlift challenge, Ian Bell won for the THIRD consecutive year, this time by less than 1 Wilks point. Dece.

How’d your week go? Tell us about your PRs and put up a video. Just copy/paste the simple youtube address in your comment for it to show up properly formatted. Just so: “http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoTYAlMy57I”  So easy, a meathead could do it.
