Recap: On Monday there was the first 70’s Big Radio podcast in a while, and it was an interview with Dr. Rob Andrade, physical therapist and smoked meat extraordinaire (it’s up to you to decide if that’s a metaphor). Chalk Talk #6 shows how waiter’s walks can be used for shoulder prehab/rehab.

Below is a sweet motivational pic of Chris deadlifting at a national meet a few years ago. What kind of external stimuli motivates you? Videos? Pictures? Songs? What gets you fucking amped to train?

Recap: On Monday we reviewed lessons from Dr. Stuart McGill and how to incorporate them into our training. Chalk Talk #5 gave explained how to do soft tissue work on the quads to reduce anterior knee pain.

Based on what we learned about spinal positioning and low back health, why is the picture below bad? What could happen at the spine? What are some cues to prevent this from happening?

Recap: On Monday I introduced Category Programming, a method that works well for very busy or beat down trainees like SOF personnel. Chalk Talk #4 came out on Wednesday, and it focuses on actively contracting the lower abs to stabilize the trunk while pressing.

Here’s a video that talks about Usain Bolt’s difficult training regime. He says that race day is the fun part, but all the hard work is miserable. His own dad even says he can’t go to his practices anymore because he doesn’t like to watch him suffer.

Being a professional athlete isn’t the same as our training. Bolt dedicates his life to that one moment in which he displays his prowess on the track. There’s nothing corny in Bolt’s presentation. It’s simple and brutal: being great is a trying, vomitous affair that makes you want to quit every step of the way. Anything good or successful in life demands the same.

What do you think is the worst part about training? Pushing through a set? Doing mobility work? Eating right?

Recap: On Monday I posted an article that discussed the benefit of “External Hip Rotation in the Squat” and why a wide stance is not conducive to doing so. Chalk Talk #3 came out Wednesday and was a quick word on the importance of preparation in training, nutrition, and rehab.

In other news:

USAW finally increased the qualifying totals to its two national meets, the American Open and Nationals. This is due to the significant increase in lifters in the past few years (thanks CrossFit) and will allow more efficient meets as well as increased standards for American weightlifting.

AC and The Law Dragon will be in town, so we’ll be creating some material and taking specific questions if you have them pertaining to collegiate strength and conditioning, law and gun control, and pretending to be the “Tuna King of the South”.

Recap: This week had “Low bar vs. High Bar Squat, Part 2” and “Chalk Talk #2“. The squat article was an update on the original article, mostly with updated thoughts about the high bar squat as well as addressing the argument that there isn’t a difference between the squat variations. Chalk Talk #2 is just a quick look at two anatomy references I use frequently and how they can help you conduct soft tissue work for rehab.

This week’s discussion: tell me what is wrong with this picture.
