July Challenge Results and BBQ Porn

We had eleven ladies and 66 men take the 3 press-3 pullup challenge. Thirty one of those came from CrossFit affiliates (Monterey, Regina, and Works) and from hawkpeter’s workout group (not sure what kind of scene he’s running).

Ladies first. The top five were AngDesi (32 rounds), Jenny L (26), Maritza (21), Amanda C (20), and Liz C (20). All eleven ladies were CrossFitters, so I have to give props there. Maybe the others will get back on board with this month’s challenge.

Eight men topped the thirty round mark. Shae and Andres A stood out with 33 rounds apiece. Garage Fit and Beau were right behind with 32. rbuell, Gill, Jason G, and Adrian M had 30 apiece. CrossFitters predictably did well in this challenge, although none topped 200 pounds. The math-challenged Garage Fit was the heaviest 30-rounder at 195 pounds. For whatever reason, he scaled up as if he was 215.

Thanks to everyone who participated. Here is the link to the google doc if you want to play with the raw data (Typskin).

I will put the August Challenge up in a sticky. It is going to be a super total: 1RM max in snatch, C&J, squat, bench, and deadlift.

The following pictures are meant to inspire you. While Justin was hopping around in a banana hammock and Brent was wearing his Just-PR’d-Dance Dance Revolution Smile, I was cooking for an engagement party. 80 pounds of meat for 20 people (I like leftovers). I even emailed Jacob and Justin when I cracked my first beer at 7:30 that morning. Behold the secrets of 70sBigness, a story in pictures.

7:30 am. A fine day. Beer is open and charcoal chimney is going. This is my buddy's smoker. He bought it from the church group and wanted me to use it for this cook.

7:59. Chimney is lit. Added the wood (1/2 oak, 1/2 mesquite). Finished the first beer and totasted the BBQ gods, asking them to give me a good cook for the day.

My 6-year old son learning the craft. He's not 70sBig yet, but he's good for hauling 50 pound sand bags and tossing the 8 and 9 year olds at judo class.

52 pound curls. As functional as it gets. (Pictured: 6 pork shoulders)

Stopped by my friend's house to get a vacuum sealer. This is the handgun rack in his gun room (not pictured: 40 rifles). What does this have to do with this post? Because it's Texas, and I've already discussed beer and BBQ.

Pork shoulder, pork ribs, back ribs, pork sausage, and chicken.

  1. Oh, and Jesus – can’t forget Jesus… Truly an awesome BBQ, though, Gant – a job well done!

Of course. Jesus and football both came up at the part that night.

  2. Being without a computer for a week meant I could only see about half the content, due to my iphone sucking. I am back and superstoked to see the results of the BBQ after receiving a tiny teaser pic on Saturday morning (I’ll even forgive the lack of brisket – this time). I also caught up on the media posted the last few days, and I have to say, nothing pleases me more than seeing go-go-gadget-AC’s vids, MentalMike’s rambling, Big Daddy Chris’s facial expressions, and of course, The Neck Nurse in all his glory. I might never travel without a laptop again. Or, I could just fix my stupid phone, I guess.

  3. I left out brisket because I hadn’t cooked on this smoker before (neither had my buddy who had just purchased it). I didn’t know how much wood it would take, how it would hold heat, and all that other good stuff. Too many variables for an overnight cook, especially since brisket is unforgiving if the heat spikes on you. The thermometer the unit came with was broken, so I chose meat that could tolerate inconsistent temps.

The cooker did well. It’s a cut-up propane tank put on a Dodge chassis. Good stuff. It took a lot of wood to get up to smoking temperature (even half-filled with mesquite). I mapped out the warmer/cooler spots so I know where to put what next time.

  5. Quite possibly the most inspiring post ever. Except maybe Gunthor. If only he could have shown up at the ‘cue and done some throws and hurdles. . .

  6. re: July challenge chart
bw was 180 lbs, did 112 for the press (not 125).

Just had a huge lunch, but those bbq and beer photos are making me hungry again.

  7. Are those challenge numbers the number of reps or sets of 3 performed?

    I did 7 sets at 173lb BW (pressed 105)

I’m not sure if that would mean I did 21 or 7. I’m thinking it’s got to be 21 or else I’ve got an even longer way to go than I thought to get 70s Big.

  8. I’m Canadian so don’t take this the wrong way, I was on par with everything but the guns seems mediocre at best. Just saying.

“I’m Canadian so don’t take this the wrong way…”

Haha. 20 handguns for one owner (not a seller or collector; he shoots these) is mediocre? What are y’all packing in Canada?

  9. Gant, Excellent job on the BBQ. As for the guns, I guess I have some work to do, my one 45 looks weak in comparision to that whole rack!

    Ha ha….. eh

  10. August challenge? “1RM max in snatch, C&J, squat, bench, and deadlift.”

I guess I ought to learn some Olympic lifts or just give a pathetic total without them. :)

  11. Ok so in the past few months I have asked numerous questions about patellar tendonitis, and Justin always said it may be my form so here are some videos i took with my phone the other night, if anyone has a sugguestion please let me know…

    For reference, I am 24, 5’9″, 183lbs

    Thanks

It’s very hard to see things in video that you can easily see in person, so keep that in mind. Your stance is wide in the first video. I don’t see much wrong with the squat, although you’re wearing tennis shoes. That could potentially cause some shifting at the bottom. More importantly that looks like a relatively light weight for you, and your form issue may not be prevalent there. Other than that, I dunno. You don’t look old enough to have this on the account of wear and tear.

    –Justin

  12. Justin

Thanks for the advice. Ill bring in the stance for my next workout. If it doesn’t hurt ill get a video of a weight that is closer to my 5rm, and ill remember to bring the actual camra next time so i dont have to use my phone. I am getting some shoes here in the next 2 weeks for my b-day so that should be taken care of (belt also).

  13. To qualify for similar levels of national events in power lifting requires nearly double the total as weightlifting. Have you thought about scaling the Snatch and CJ results so that the score more closely reflects 50% WL/50% PL?

Or at least so the result is not just ‘who is the best powerlifter who happens to know how to snatch and clean?’

To see what I mean compare:

    http://weightlifting.teamusa.org/content/index/3579

  14. I’m not going to scale for several reasons. First, raw numbers are easier to read. Second, I’m not concerned if one group has an edge or not. We’re just having fun. The weightlifting boys will get their due in October. Third, don’t let the numbers mislead you. The Olympic lifts don’t result in the same totals, but that doesn’t mean Oly guys can’t do the powerlifts.

Weightlifters that bother to do this (there probably won’t be any) will do fine in the squat and deadlift. Kendrick Farris, the 85kg weightlifter, can deadlift 593 for a set of 10! I think they’ll be just fine.
