Lifting Vids

AC has been training with Taylor, a good friend that I used to pal around with when I was still in school. Taylor has pretty impressive pressing strength and bear-like features. I have heard stories of him cuddling a grizzly in its den because he “needed a soft warm body in those winter months”. I wasn’t shocked when he told me this.

A-way is his fiance and is in the top three funniest girls I know. She has surprising ferocity in her miniature stature, especially regarding her bear hug (it helps with Taylor). They are both the feature of another original AC film, and AC makes a deadlifting appearance at the end. Sweet song too.

In early June, Brent hit a PR Snatch at the WFAC in the midst of his powerlifting training.

Here’s a vid of Chris pulling 600 back in May (I think). He doesn’t get pumped at all, and that’s a rarity for him. I thought it was more impressive because he just walks up to the bar and pulls it (trust me, I know what he’s like when he’s amped).

PR Friday. Post any personal bests you may have hit this week into the comments.

  1. A.C. has some good music selection talent. I’ve like all the music he’s put into his films.

I’ve got mixed feelings about my pr this week. First time ripping my athletic shorts while squatting. Happy i’m big enough to do that. Sad that I have no money to buy a bigger replacement pair.

    And Brent’s a badass.

  2. PR:
    Run 400m then

225lb Squatx5 then 5 pushups on the min for 6 min.

    then run 400m

then Tabata Deadlift 225 with a min of 50 total reps.

Punishment for not registering for the CA state games in time.

    LOVED IT!!!!

  3. first snatch session ever on wednesday, 4×8 power snatches worked upto 45kg,
and squatted 4×8 with 100kg which really pleased me.

  4. My only PR this week was military pressing 150lbs. My previous best was 135. I actually did my full workout, then hit 140, then 150, so I guess I got 2 PRs. I felt strong so maybe in a few of weeks I’ll try 160.

Tomorrow afternoon when I wake-up it’s deadlifting time, so maybe I’ll have a new PR to post then.

  5. I ride a bicycle for my job right now, 10 hour shifts at a time. Today I worked, helped a friend bale hay (300 F%*king bales) and then hit my most legit 5RM deadlift which was 415# up from 405#.

I had previously bounced the weights off the ground but after recently recieving and reading Starting Strength I cut that shit out.

Thanks to Justin, Gant, AC, Brent and the rest of the 70’s Big crew for the motivation!

  6. PR’d last night on squat: 255#x3x5

That was a goal I set for myself back in January before I got real serious with the barbell stuff. At the time I weighted 170, so that was 1.5xBW. Now I weight 195 so maybe I should re-adjust my goal to 200 before the end of the year. Haven’t decided yet, because I feel I need to get my BP up because its my weakest movement (170x3x5). Suggestions: Keep concentrating on squats or more focus on bench (while still squatting of course)?

You talk about it like you’re programming one at a time. As a novice you can do both with a linear progression. You could bench twice a week and just press once, if you wanted to.

  7. First Powerlifting competition since I was in high school tomorrow! Graduated in ’99.

Looking forward to it! Will post results next week!

  8. I love seeing 70sbig videos on PR friday. Great work by all lifters.

Only 1 kinda PR this week

    Squat – 340lbs 4,2,2

I’m starting to think about moving into an intermediate program. Sucks, I was hoping I had more in me.

    Ht/wt?

  9. Volume PRs:
    Squat 400x5x5
    Bench 270x5x5

    Absolute PRs:
    Bench 315×1 (3 wheels finally)

    Cardio PR:
Did 20 min on the stepmill last night and was hurting, first bit of strictly cardio I’ve done in prob 10 months.

Good luck to anyone competing in the USAPL meet tomorrow in Spring,TX. I was planning on competing but have some banned substances in my allergy meds and didn’t get the paperwork done to declare them in time for the comp. My USAPL membership card expires at the end of the year, so I guess I’ll have to man up at some point or just eat that cost.

I’ll be there in my 70sBig shirt cheering everyone on…

  10. Back Squat 155x5x5. Will get 160 tonight.

Carried a queen mattress down four flights of stairs in modest tribute to the old man lifting the fridge. Moving sucks.

  11. At my last highland games I put almost 4ft on my heavy weight for distance – up to 24’7″

    Another comp tomorrow.

I have no point of reference (maybe Gant can help), but Highland Games look sweet.

    –Justin

  12. Body was fried from hitting PR’s last week, but by yesterday I was hitting 195×3 on the powerclean, which is a best for me. Tomorrows my high volume day, so we’ll see how I do.

  13. PR’s this week

    Press: 1 X 6 175
    DL: 1X8 365
    Bench: 1 X 8 at 250

Finally, AC, some early Metallica. The first three albums are as good as lifting music gets.

Fun fact: My dad actually works for Metallica as their on-call PT. He as gone on tour with them several times. The most recent was last year.

    –A.C.

    The band never liked AC.

    –Justin

Justin doesn’t like me to have other friends, but at the same time he is such a caring friend. He cares so much he won’t even let me sleep alone. Just ask about Halloween.

    –A.C.

  14. This week’s PRs:

    Tuesday – 1RM box squat @ 385#

Wednesday – dead lift triple at 405# – missed getting a second triple on the third rep, bar got just above the knees, but no more.

  15. long time, no post.

competed at star of the north games on june 19th. achieved no weight PRs, but a meet total PR of 98 kilos (goal was 100).

figured it was a good time to try something new after the meet, so i started crossfit football. i’ve never been good at sprinting and i’m fairly certain i’m already faster.

    anyway…
    Overhead Press 70×1
    very excited about this one:
    Squat 185×1 mmmmm

  16. I hit a bench press PR this week: 225# 5×5.

I also hit a body weight PR: 173#, three days in a row. I’m 5’9″.

Food PR: I did my first gallon of milk day this week. No problem! I’m going to start on GOMAD in August.

It looks like the rack in the last video is in an office building break room. If so, badass!

  17. Competition week with bay state games tomorrow. PR is that I have 5 if not 6 athletes competing in either their first or second weightlifting competition ever!

Worked up to a back squat of 1 x 20 reps with 135 kg. That is the heaviest I’ve done for that volume before.

  18. all sorts of pr’s
    bw-217
    PC-295
    BS-420
    Bench-360
    DL-515

dude, what i love is georgia southerns rec looks awesome, i got colorado stae and they will nver have bumpers, or platforms…good stuff

  19. Its cool to seem some vids of girls lifting so I can prove to my GF that it wont make her look manly. Convinced her to lift weights today so these are all PR’s for her. It was her first day learning these lifts so we were more concerned with form than anything else.

    Squat: 50x5x3
Press: 40x5x3 (Used a non olympic bar)
    Dead: 95x5x1

  20. Brent’s snatch is suspect…performance enhancing t-shirts are banned in most feds. And did Chris bring a power rack into his local starbucks?

    Squat: 415×2
Got a “Dude, you got huge…no homo.”

Everything else working back from a reset.

  21. just ordered my belt from Inzer. totally stoked to smash from friggin PRs

also, just incorporated low bar squats as a nice change from high bar. so far so good

also, the 70s Big shirt with Justin on it is currently undergoing some touch ups before I print.

  22. Very impressive deadlift, Chris.

I’m dually impressed that you used a double-overhand grip!! Beast.

No PRs this week, but I have a meet tomorrow (and the week after). For tomorrow’s meet I’ll be working up to my openers for next week’s meet.

I still suck, so I’m trying to get as much experience as possible.

  23. Squat: 395 x 3
    Press: 170 x 3
    Rack Pull: 425 x 5

I pulled a muscle in my neck on the last rep of the Presses. That is the second time this year that this has happened.

  24. Current Lifting Numbers:
Squat 275x5x3 (10 lbs from old PR)
    Bench 205x5x3 (PR)
Deadlift 315x5x1 (20 lbs from old PR)
    Press 137.5x5x3 (PR)
Power Clean 180x3x5 (5 lbs from old PR)
    Power Snatch 120x2x7 (PR)

Only a week or two before all my lifts are in PR-land!

  25. Just bought my belt from inzer and a pair of the 2010 do-wins a couple days ago so they should be here within the next couple weeks. Also got a new baseball glove on order which is unrelated but still pretty pumped for that too.

    Pr’s:

    Bench 180x5x3

working my squat back up to old pr of 315 after switching to low bar (at 300 now). Resetting deadlift after failing 365…bench failed 185 today and press failed 135 last “B” day. waiting to see how far my squat can progress and then i think it’s time for me to change programming to intermediate methods…unless anyone thinks it’s better to just change to TM now. I did just however start adding in chins FAILUREx3 on friday (so started today with chins) and pullups FAILUREx3 on monday so that should help with my upperbody stalls.

Note: I have not read the books. I used up all my charm on my mother to let me use the credit card for the belt/shoes/glove. Parents aren’t too fond of online shopping.

I’m impressed you made it this far. How tall are you and how much do you weigh?

    –Justin

  26. Squat 315×5. It’s taken me 10 months but finally 3 wheels. A shoulder injury has put progress on bench, press and chin-ups on hold for now.
