Misc.

Unfortunately some of you thought this was related to the Misc forums. I’m not edemucated about that, but here are a few smaller topics.

PR Friday
Remember that whole community thing from yesterday? Well, this community likes seeing how you do in training. Did you hit a lifting PR that you’ve been chasing? Are you reaching your body composition or weight gaining goal? Did you help people push their truck out of the road (something I did twice in 18 hours when in Texas — I forgot to mention it)? Tell us about it in the comments.

Chicago Workshop Weekend
I’m traveling to Chicago tomorrow to do the Workshop Weekend (Lifting on Saturday, Programming on Sunday) in Chicago. I worked on and improved the lectures on both days, so if you’re still interested in coming, there are a couple spots still open. CLICK HERE FOR INFORMATION AND PURCHASE.

When I travel I post things on the Facebook Fan Page or Twitter, so check those out. I am going to cry myself to sleep because I’ll miss a portion of the football games. I’ll just have Jacob Cloud text me drunken updates.

Conan
I’ve held an exact replica of Conan’s sword that was made by the son of the guy that made it for Arnold (in Spain, I think). This replica was sharp, heavy, and usable. It was also owned by a guy named Conan (I’m not making this shit up). It’s the same thing that Arnold used; at first they gave him some kind of lighter crap-sword, and he basically said, “Fuck that, I want the real deal.” In all of the scenes, Arnold is using a real, razor sharp sword.

Tactical Strength Challenge
Every now and then I drop the ball with something. For example, that whole trying to make several fantasy football leagues thing? Yeah, I dropped the ball there (here’s the actual league with some of the guys from the site including Cloud, Briskin, Chris, Kittensmash, and Stroup). But I didn’t realize how soon the official TSC was…it’s this weekend. Go to www.tacticalstrengthchallenge.com to see the ruling on this even that has a three attempt max deadlift, maximum pull-ups, and max kettlebell snatches in a 5:00 time period. There are varying divisions for men and women (including weighted pull-ups and a heavier KB for the men’s elite division) as well as gyms holding official events this Saturday. I scrolled through and saw various acquaintances or friends in Sacramento, Denver, and Fort Wayne. The TSC is an interesting way to test yourself.

Deficiency
As far as recovery and nutrition are concerned, what are you deficient in? This could be sleep, water, protein, carbs, fat, vitamins, minerals, mobbing, etc. What is the thing that you need to improve?

  1. New pr long time no post. Lifting at the Cal oly gym- freaking sick used an eleiko bar for the first time and hit prs of 90 snatch and 110 c and j. Great crew down there and reccomend you all to check it out. 85 kg lifter who has been only oly-ing for about 4 months now. Yo maslow, I am in arlington too, where you live at bro? lets get jacked!

  2. Been a while since I’ve posted. Tried suit on this week didn’t fit so went and got fitted for a new one…in two years went from a 48L at 6-6 275 to a 56L at 6-6 still 275. Pants still 42 waist… persistence hard work and realization that this shit takes time.

  3. Deficiencies:

Sleep. With a 2 year old and a 3 week old, I just have to catch what I can.

I also need more veggies: for some reason, meals that friends cook for you when you have a kid is high in carbs and low in veges.

  4. PR Friday: Got one of my Lieutenants started on lifting the barbell. He is going to SFAS in a year, so I’m going to help him get ready.

I’m doing the busy father version of GSLP right now.

  5. Pretty shitty week of lifting. Minor squat PR of 125kg for 10. Been having issues with leaning forward quite dramatically on my squats for a while now – adding leg raises and leg presses seems to be helping (5/3/1). Anyone else have this problem, or know how to remedy it?

  6. I did the Tactical Strength Challenge with a couple other people today and we all did the Men’s Elite category. I weighed in at 195.5lbs. Joe weighed in at 177.2lbs. J.D. weighed in at 162lbs. We had to sub in a dumbbell since the gym I am at only has kettlebells up to 35lbs.

    Yosh (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWLI5oyUkt4)

Deadlift: 550lbs (went 3 for 3 and a new PR)
    Pull ups w/ 10kg: 15
    70lbs DB Snatch: 70
    Total Score: 90

    Joe

    Deadlift: 405lbs
    Pull ups w/ 10kg: 8
    70lbs DB Snatch: 50
    Total Score: 60.68

    J.D. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9hA-9etIIA)

    Deadlift: 405lbs
    Pull ups w/ 10kg: 9
    70lbs DB Snatch: 36
    Total Score: 57.68

Awesome and nice job, Yosh.. Looks like fun.

  8. Just started on a 5/3/1 program, so I can’t claim to have any radical changes atm. Regardless, results from the third week of 5/3/1:

    BS 6×160 lbs
    Press 9×65
    Deadlift 4×170
    Bench 6×95

New PR in Power Snatch, 2×85 @ 132 BW

I’m focusing on bodyweight exercises for assistance work- those have actually improved greatly since I’ve put them in the program.

Sleep has been lacking in my department, which means that the weight loss (cutting won’t start til next year for weigh-ins) is struggling. Really having trouble balancing eating enough to feel strong in the lifts but also slowly/safely drop body weight. Dropped 3 lbs in two weeks. Goal is 121 for competition, currently at ~130.6.

  9. 375 Deadlift for a set of 5 this week. Inching closer to that elusive 400 and eventually 500. Squat and everything else is coming along nicely.

Deficient in? Probably upper body strength. Stupid bench.

  10. @Maslow
I actually recently purchased some bumpers, and a york power bar from craigslist and am lifting in my parent’s sun room after moving home after college. I made some jerk blocks and now have a little dungeon that fits about one person at a time, a stereo, and a beach chair to sit in in between sets. I would invite you to come over, but it is almost too cramped to do, but we can work something out eventually.

  11. I actually picked this screen name a year or so ago (maybe more) when I first posted on 70’s big and I was pounding milk, bacon, and starting strength and it seemed an apt title for my current state of affairs.

  12. OK just asking becuase I see all these people at the gym all the time who are in this Gold’s campaign thing and their programs definitely focus on anything but strength. They mostly stick to elipticals and bosu balance nonsense.

  13. This question is directed to Justin.

I’m wanting to gain 15-20 pounds, but I can’t recover like I use to when I started Starting Strength. I’ve started the Texas Method but was wondering if I can gain that much weight with the Texas Method? With an emphasis of eating tons on the volume day?

I’m currently 210 and 18 years of age.
    Squat 275 5×5
    Bench 185 5×5
    Deadlift 310 1×5

Your numbers seem a bit low to be on a TM at your body weight, but it could happen. The “just eat more” answer won’t simply work for you. Is gaining 15 pounds the answer for your strength? It sounds like you have a higher body fat percentage, given that you weigh 210 and your numbers are not spectacular. I’d rather see you get consistent in your diet (protein intake primarily) since I have to assume that it isn’t consistent due to you being 18 and saying you eat more on Volume Day.
