Top Blokes

The workshop weekend is complete, and it was pretty solid. I rolled into Shire Speed and Strength with no sleep for a few days (this seems to be my thing) and Pete Upham is a top fucking bloke. He took us to a breakfast joint, got me coffee, had the gym all set up, barbecued chicken for lunch, kept me supplied with water and even an energy drink mid-day, and was taking care of me like a mum should. Thanks for a great weekend, Pete. Here are various pics that Pete took, and a video I have from the morning I arrived.

  1. Great weekend Justin! I finally got some descent help on how to fix my squat, and how not to get crushed on texas method.

Hope you have an awesome week in Sydney. You should walk over the top of the harbour bridge. It’s expensive, but pretty sweet.

  2. Justin, way to use all those new found Australian words. Don’t come back until you learn to speak American again.

PS You’re lucky you weren’t savagely raped by a Koala that was all jacked up on eucalyptus.

  3. I maybe fucking high but I seem to remember somebody posting a site to order some rugby shorts to look 70s big whilst squatting, but I cant seem to find it.

  4. Indeed a top weekend. The 70’s Big world is a vast and eclectic one, a lot of people got to meet each others who previously were only sign in names and photos.

The all-you-can-eat Brazilian BBQ was a 70’s Big food win and nobody came away from the weekend without plenty of lifting and programming homework to go on with.

  5. @stankrom-
Take your time–it’s a heavy set of 5, not a conditioning workout. Reset and breathe for each rep like it’s a heavy single.

I can’t really tell where the bar is on your back but your mechanics look more like a high bar squat–are you trying to go low bar or high bar?

  6. @ Eric – I’ve always been under the impression the faster you can move the weight, the better. I am shooting for high bar.

On squats, you don’t want to a) try to complete the set as fast as possible nor b) descend as fast as possible because c) it won’t be as tight, safe, and therefore as effective as possible.

  7. ron, as Justin has mentioned, it’s way easier to See things from a 45deg front or back angle. then we can see what your knees are doing and where your stance/grip is set.

Justin has final say, but I’d say get your hips back more on the way down so you can push through your heels a bit more.

as far as speed goes, you could add (probably significant) weight if you slowed down. are you training for strength or speed?

  8. @stankrom–
Speed is good for individual reps–that’s the idea behind Westside-style dynamic effort. It’s a different story for the set as a whole. If you want to lift as much weight as possible you should be breathing, resetting, and getting tight again before each rep.

  9. Excellent, thank you…

The last week or so I have moved my toes back inside for a more straight ahead stance. I have actually been able to tell the difference big time. I feel a lot tighter and stronger at the bottom of my squat which I think has helped me.
