Rib Picture Contest

I hearby announce probably the weirdest and grossest contest on this site, The Shirtless Rib Eating Picture Contest. Inspired by this video, Jacob got the contest started. He’ll be hard to beat, folks. Let’s give this three weeks to run. I’ll announce the winners on either July 21 or July 22 (I leave to go to Australia on those days).

Happy PR Friday
Post your training updates or PRs to the comments.

I’m off to train. Tom put this up on the 70’s Big Facebook Fan Page. The caption was, “Shrug Thug has become a pigeon”.

  1. Deadlift 210 kg (~463 lbs) x2

This wasn´t pretty and my low back hurts a bit now.

I think it´s time for a major reset/change of programming, as I´m stalling on all my lifts right now, even though I took a week off…

  2. Squat is still going up at 10#/week jumps, now sitting at 265 X 5. Can’t wait to get back above 300 again! Just a couple more weeks of solid lifting and I’ll be there.

Deadlift is going a little slower, but still increasing in 5# increments. Today was 335 X 5.

I ordered new rugby shorts to squat in. I can’t remember who recommended those on here, but I can’t wait to get them in. My running shorts are getting a little tight around the rear section when I drop down.

  3. Haha, I saw the title of this post and was really confused. I initially thought you wanted to see pictures of our ribs, as in, so skinny that ribs are visible. I should have known better ;)

  4. Cleaned 265 pounds. Made it on 2nd attempt after keeping my chin up. Had missed it many, many times in the spring and hadn’t even cleaned 245 in a while.

Texas may be Brisket country but North Carolina is the land of ribs done right.

  5. @Deerslayer

For short lifting shorts, rugby shorts are a great option. Specifically, I mean the “modern” synthetic ones as opposed to the slightly cheaper polycotton ones that have mostly been phased out since the 90’s. The older ones absorb moisture without wicking it away, they tend to bunch up, and and they lack the easy elasticity of the newer ones which usually have large elastic sections along the outer thighs.

I don’t know why some folks here expressed a preference for cotton short shorts. Is it a comfort issue? Aesthetics? Practicality? They’re probably cheaper than rugby shorts. And more comfortable, so I guess that makes sense. Just curious what some other preferences out there are.

This is a good point. I will check this out.

  6. Press PR – 102 lbs

Masters Pan Ams are next weekend. I had a great training day today, which is saying a lot considering how things have been going. I power cleaned 70 kg like a fucking boss, which was not a PR, but I haven’t hit over 69 recently. So, 70 kg is going over my head next weekend. That is all.

  7. No PRs this week since I somehow came down with the worst flu of my life, which brings me to a question. Justin/anyone who has an opinion, I plan on returning to lifting on Monday (figure I should be well by then). Should I resume TM as usual since it was only a week off, redo last week, or drop a little weight and work back up?

  8. @ ThunderThighs, I don’t see why you couldn’t.

(quick justin, edit the conditions to stipulate “topless” instead of “shirtless”)

    what

  9. TT, I was replying to cloud’s awesomeness just above my first comment. “he might be awesome, but his arms are damn small, etc”

  10. Weights are in Kgs for 3×5. Since starting the 70s big S&C program a few weeks ago my progress is as follows:
    Squat 70Kg to 100Kg
    Press 40Kg to 55Kg
    Bench 65Kg to 80Kg
    Deadlift 90Kg to 120Kg
    Power clean 60Kg to 72.5Kg
Pullups and dips from +10Kg to +20Kg

Next week I will be going 3×5 on my previous 1RM on the squat and deadlift. I occasionally head over to the crossfit box on conditioning days when the WOD suits and my times are improving even with the shift of focus from pure crossfit to an LP with some conditioning.

I bought a mountain bike and will compete in my first race in August.

  11. just got home from the gym. i had to walk my bike through a raging thunderstorm. thought i was going to get struck by lightning. that would have been quite a PR. anyway…

    press-83×1
DL-242×3 *this is an all time PR: my old 1RM was 240. i wonder what my new, true 1RM is!

and here’s the really exciting one:
    squat 215×1 uff da!

  12. Benched 300 for an easy 3 RM.

Also, some knowledge PRs on the intersection of competitive lifting and pro wrestling:

    1. Read Ric Flair’s autobiography this past week. He talks about rooming with Ken Patera during his training for the ’72 Olympics. Breakfast was 24 eggs and two gallons of milk. Lunch was five whoppers. Dessert was a prodigious volume of booze and cigarettes.

    2. Rediscovered the bench press contest between the Road Warriors and the Powers of Pain. Very 70’s Big in a mid-80’s kinda way. I think powerlifting would enjoy a major surge in popularity if more meets ended this way. 5:20 explains why so many gyms ban chalk.

  13. squat 3x5x350
    deadlift 1x3x455 PR
bench 1x3x340 Dude put his fingers on bar for 2 of 3 reps and I had to yell at him twice “I got it”. Because of this I can’t count a new 3 rep PR.

  14. The world is built for 90’s Small people PR: back of my computer chair broke off while I was sitting in it yesterday. For now I just have a computer stool with wheels.

  15. @A.K. I personally like cotton shorts because cotton takes longer to smell real bad and synthetic fibers smell super bad once they get sweaty.

    my $.02
