You’re Welcome

Spencer Hall of edsbs.com found me THIS excellent link with pictures of Ricky Bruch that you have never seen. There are 35 total, and I’ve picked some of the good ones for below. Ricky Bruch is honored by the gods. I hereby name him to the 70’s Big Hall of Fame posthumously.

Regular style

Didn't need a spot

As you can see, Ricky was a joyous, burly man. He clearly trained his ass off yet had fun while doing it. I wish I could have known this man.

  1. Any idea how he lost his left index finger? I’ll bet he was doing something awesome, like wrestling a bear or juggling chainsaws.

Maybe it became possessed and he had to cut it off, like Ash did in Evil Dead.

Or maybe during a night of partying a friend bet everyone that Ricky wasn’t strong enough to rip off his own finger. Then, like Stu did with his tooth in The Hangover, Ricky ripped his own finger clean off his hand.

Sorry, I digress…rest in piece, Ricky. A welcome entry to the Hall of Fame.

  2. Great addition to the HoF! Yet another reminder that I need to get bigger…

Haven’t trained much lately, been travelling with work and now leaving for vacation tomorrow. Planning to start up on the GSLP when my life returns to normalcy.

I posted this on the FB page, but I know not everyone is a FB addict so I’ll repeat:

Does any know of a place to buy squat/lifting shoes in the Houston (more specifically Katy) area? Also, if anyone knows of a place in San Antonio that would be great too.

  3. If you use the Google Chrome web browser, it can translate entire pages. I did that and read the Swedish news article. Chrome didn’t translate the photo captions, so instead I copied and pasted the captions into Google Translate and got them.

  4. Ricky Bruch’s death.

Discus legend died today: “He was a fight to the end”

    Swedish athletics have sorrow.
    Ricky Bruch’s dead.
Legend died on Monday after a lengthy cancer illness.
    – It is painful to be almost 90 years and losing her son, says mom Annelies to Sportbladet.

Sportbladet told May 21 that former discus star Ricky Bruch suffered a life threatening illness and that he fought for his life.

    – He was admitted a few weeks ago. He is weak, and has a disease that can lead to death, but Ricky has tricked a few times before. But the situation right now is serious, “said a close friend of Sportbladet last Saturday.

    One fights to the end
    Today he gave up.

Ricky Bruch died on Monday at a hospital in southern Sweden.
The hospital staff said that “they have never seen a braver patient”.

    – The surrounding area knew that there was some emergency. But Ricky was not prepared to accept death. He was one fights until the very end, “said one employee to Sportbladet.
In the morning, Mom Annelies call from the hospital. She was with and held her son’s hand when he fell asleep.

    – It is painful to be almost 90 years and losing her child, but I’m grateful that I got to be with him when he fell asleep, “she told Sportbladet.

    Equaled the world record.

The highlight of his career came in 1972 when he tied the world record in the discus with 68.40 at the DN Gala in Stockholm.
Later in the season took Bruch bronze medal at the Olympics in Munich.
    He was 64 years.

Athletics, movies and music – he tried the most.

1946: Born July 2 in Örgryte, Gothenburg, but grew up in southern Sweden.
1967: Takes his first national championships, in the discus. A total of eleven national championships in the crotch.
1969: European Championship silver in Athens (61.08).
1970: Taking the first of two national championships in the shot put.
1971: Releasing the single “Me No Prisoners Wedding.
1972: Olympic bronze in the discus in Munich. Tangential to the world record (68.40) on the DN Gala.
1973: Got prize as the world’s best athletes of the leading sports journalists. Won for the fifth consecutive year, the Olympic days in Sofia, Bulgaria, with the entire world elite in place.
1974: European Championship bronze in Rome. Bruch makes debut as an actor in the film, even angels can hit a straight right.
1976: Left the crying in the Montreal Olympics in 1976 after missing the final.
1984: Returned to discus the ring after a few years’ absence. Played directly to the Swedish record (71.26), which are still valid today. Did the role of the great silent thief Labbas of Ronja.
1985: In connection with these races in Malmö, he landed in trouble with the coach Anders Borgström. It ended with Borgstrom went on a hefty punch. And Bruch had done her in competitions.
1990: Come out with his autobiography “gladiator fights.”
1991: was recruited to the New Democracy by Bert Karlsson.
2006: Sunday, May 7 Bruch burned all his life’s work. Prices, videotapes and books of poetry. Everything.
2011: dies after a brief illness.

  5. I love the Robin Hood and band of thieves photo. It’s interesting that he burned all of his posessions a few years before his death. My grandfather did the same thing. Glad to see this man in the Hall. All honor to him. What a brutal beast! I’d support adding his countryman, Magnus Samuelsson, as well.

PRs/Training Update: I will re-enter PR territory tomorrow I hope. I attempted to match my squat 5-rep PR of 370# last Saturday but was only able to do a double then a single. I’ll try again tomorrow.

PR: My little brother (age 18, 155 lbs) is making great progress on his LP. He started training a couple months ago and is up to 115 on squats and 100 on bench. I hope he overtakes me in the next couple years. I’m going to my first country music concert tomorrow after a morning lift. I plan to drink a ton of home brews in the parking lot and then sweat and piss red, white and blue the rest of the afternoon.

    Lift heavy and eat hardy!

  6. This morning at the gym was rough. I was tired and just didn’t have much energy, felt sluggish. Maybe I ate too much oatmeal for breakfast. Anyways, the damage:

    All are 5RM in pounds:
    Press 140
    Squat 235
    Deadlift 335

Oh, and that first picture looks like my lifting partner if he grew his hair out!

  7. PRs:

    Squat 290x5x3
    Deadlift 385x5x1

If you have a moment to say a prayer or two for the family of one of my students, that would be great. He was on his way to school on his motorcycle Tuesday (5/31) when he was in a traffic accident and killed. Graduation was tonight (6/3). His classmates have been taking it very hard, especially since the graduating class is less then 50 students total. He is survived by his parents and 10 year old sister.

He worked hard in my classes, and even recently deadlifted 275# for a personal PR. Always a bright and cheerful guy, he will be missed by many.

  8. I fully support Ricky Bruch HOF Induction.

Justin and ladies, I just got a new woman client who is quite strong and coordinated. I typically train squats, deadlifts and cleans with my clients depending on their fitness level and amount of training they have signed up for. This girl could become quite the lifter. However, I have encountered something for the first time and I don’t want to set myself up for an awkward experience. She has a very large chest and I was wondering if I should still teach her the clean? I dont think it will be a problem but I won’t know until I try. Any advice?

The biggest hooters will still be held down by a sports bra. Or two.

    –Justin

  9. @Justin: contact saul about the swedish translation. he studied the language at the u of m.

@JMOvechkin: as a lady, i say teach her the clean! chances are she has a pretty good awareness of how her breasts move with and relate to her body considering she lives with them day in and day out. my guess is that she’ll know how to pull and how to hold her posture to account for the bar path and its relationship to her chest. once in a great while i’ll hit my chest, but that’s only because i’ve done something wrong. it’s a good cue to check my form. sure it can get painful, but it’s not bad enough that i’d avoid the lift and all the benefits i derive from training it. as a side note, watch out for DB rows. now those can scrape a whole layer off a nipple if the lifter isn’t careful. make sure the breasts are packed in tight on days you have her do DB rows (if that’s even something you train). i’m currently recovering from this injury. not pleasant.

  10. From the translated web page:

“1967: … A total of eleven national championships in the crotch.”

Wow. Ricky must have been a quite a man. Much respect.

  11. Squat 285x3x5
    Bench 255x3x5/4/2
    Press 160x3x4
    Deadlift 395x1x3
    Pull Up BW+60x3x5
    Split Squat 170x3x5

I failed for the first time on bench since I started the LP. I don’t know if a deload is in order or if I just had a bad day. Also on the press I could not pull the trigger on the last rep of any set @160. I was on the 3rd rep of DL and started seeing spots so I decided to end the set lest I hit my head and get my gym bag rummaged through whilst unconscious.
QUESTION: I am impressed with Chris’s hook grip deadlift style and I like the thought of symmetry in my grip and shoulders when deadlifting, but I don’t know how to do it. Any tips anyone? Perhaps a fine “how to” video on youtube?

  12. 475 x 1 Squat.
Missed 550 above the knees, then 540 also above the knees ~5 minutes later. So I’ma go back tomorrow and get 540.

  13. swoleness PRs:

-wife told me it looked like I was wearing her jeans last night. They were men’s relaxed fit, however looked like “shitty hipster” fit.
-Also said I looked “beefy” in a longsleeve t-shirt.
-Button on my polo shirts will not stay closed.

  14. @JMOvechkin: My wife is, uh, well endowed. She can clean just fine. Teach your client to clean.

    Ok, PR stuff:
    6 pullups.

    /imawuss

More seriously, I injured my back recently, and have been concentrating on upper body work. I’m back doing light squats and deadlifts, and I should be able to start loading again soon. I’m also still at the beginning of my LP, thanks to said back injury.

  15. PRs:
Back Squat 275 3×5. Hard as fuck, but I got it. Seems like first and last rep of each set only hit parallel, but I was able to sink the majority deep.
    Bench 3×5 @ 165

Feels like my BS is about to stall. Maybe I just need to sack up, recover and push through. The bar tried to defeat me yesterday, I prevailed through force of will.

Hey Justin – just curious what you think, should I just try repeating 275 and nail it? Should I microload it to 277? Or just go all out to 280 and see what happens? Any thoughts? (33, 5′-11″, 188lbs. Following CFFB Amateur progression to the T. Been lifting for about 2 years)

  16. Went back to the gym to go for 535 (Exactly what I need to break the record I’m going for). Puked about half way up, kept it all in my mouth and LOCKED THAT MOTHERFUCKER OUT.

  17. week 11 of this LP done, i still suck, but i suck a little less than i did last week.

    squats – 5 X 3 270 lbs
    bench – 5 X 3 215 lbs
    power clean – 3 X 5 165 lbs

  18. Ricky Bruch was a badass mofo. Plain and simple.

@MKingW – apparently his left index finger got cut off with an axe. The complete story leaves much to the imagination.

  19. Of-fucking-course I did. I quickly contemplated spitting it all into the trash, but then thought “What am I? some kind of limp-wristed faggot?”

  20. Squat 285x5x3
    Bench 195x5x3
    Press 120x5x3
    Deadlift 335×1
    Power Clean 160×3,3,2,3,3

The squat feels really heavy. I have to remind myself to bounce/explode (or at least attempt to) out of the bottom. I end up grinding them out slowly to the top, but I didn’t miss any, so I guess I’ll add five pounds and do it again.

I was supposed to do five reps on the deadlift, but I failed the second about two inches off the floor. 325 the week before felt life changing heavy. I think I’ll attempt 330 on Monday and start adding five pounds each time instead of 10.

The power cleans also feel heavy. I think I’ll either start microloading at 2.5 pounds per week, or I’ll do five pounds every other week and alternate with power snatches.

I’m right at my 175 pound weight limit for my job (5’7″). I’m also right at the neck to waist circumference difference, so I’ll have to clean up my eating, start using the neck machine, and add two conditioning days per week to make sure I don’t get put on the fat boy program. I hope this won’t slow the strength gains down too much.

  21. HBBS:
    165 lbs for 5-5-12

    Life PR:
My lease on my gym started on Wednesday. We got almost all of my existing equipment moved in today (well, I didn’t…but my husband and one of my coaches did). “We” are building two platforms tomorrow. If Progress Energy would turn the fucking power on, I might be able to get everything I need done for my fire inspection completed in the next week.

Is anyone going to Rip’s seminar in Atlanta next weekend? If you’re not, you should because I will be there on Saturday.

  22. I thought I was going to have the coolest training story today, what with shooting blood out of my nose while squatting 3×435, but that was before I saw that StillGrowing threw up in his mouth, finished the rep, AND THEN FUCKING SWALLOWED IT. You are one sick bastard.

    I also benched 3×265 (I know, I know) and deadlfited 3×475.

  23. Another Week, another PR TM plus lots of food= gains

    Squat 395×3 (ten pound jump)
Bench: 200x3x5- LP is cruising along, should get at least another week or so with it.
    Press: 135×5,5,7

Lifting is good. Going for some DL pr’s tomorrow.

  24. I do Swedish, but only at a basic level.

    PRs:
    Chinup 95×8 (after 90×8 pr)
    Curl 145×7
    Press 207x1x3

Absolutely positive my TM setup will return my squat to 485x1x3 and higher except with 30lbs lighter BW and decent olympic lifts this time.

  25. Tbone – I thought about going to Rip’s seminar, but I’ll probably go to a beer festival in Brookhaven (north Atlanta) on Saturday instead.
