Eye Opening

Folks, we talk a lot about barbell training on this site, but we ignore too many other forms of training out there. For instance, look at the utility in this equipment:

First, they save you $125. What you are saving it on is immaterial. Instead, look at the set-up. Yes, the actor may be a bit smaller than us, but look at his attire. He looks great! And he’s so functional — the shaking he experiences on the ring push-ups means he’s building functionality that can’t be attained anywhere else.

As far as programs go, P90X is magnificent. If you go to 1:48 in this video and watch the progress pictures, you’ll notice how P90X magnificently removed body hair from this subject. Magnificent ;-)

Lastly, a lot of you have been thinking about trying out Olympic lifting. I advise you, good sirs, to obtain optimal form with PVC pipe before attempting it with a bar. If you can’t do it with PVC, how can you do it with a load?

I am so excited to announce that it is PR Friday! I caution you “heavy eaters” out there to not post today, let’s focus on healthy eating in this PR Friday. The only people that can post are lifters who eat less than 50 grams of carbohydrates a day and squat more than 500 pounds. Also, if you don’t do everything I say, you can’t post here either. Oh, and you have to call me High Chancellor when you do it. Or else.

  1. press: 80x1x2 (this is huge for me. my press hasn’t gone up in eons. the last time i hit a PR in the press was months ago and it was 78…and i was wearing a belt…and it was very difficult. this time i had no belt and it zipped right up on both reps. i was elated.)

front squat: 115×5 (never thought i’d do a set of five front squat…but that’s what crossfit football called for this week. 115 has actually been my recent 1RM, so this is an interesting increase)

also got my first strict ring pull up. i’ve had strict pull ups on a bar for a while, and kipped ring pull ups for a while—but i had never been able to get a strict pull up on the rings until today.

back squat (low bar): 190x5x1 (consisted of 185-195-195-190-185)

AND…a maybe PR: i have been whining (and bitching) to the owners of Los Campeones Gym to open up a women’s division in the upcoming Strongman Competition for a couple weeks now. i think i might have convinced them! i’ll keep you posted…i would LOVE LOVE LOVE to do a strong (wo)man competition.

  2. Press 205x1x5, 180×3, 177.5×4
    Clean 315
    Clean and Jerk 305
Entered the Strongman Contest above and persuaded a friend to do so as well. It will be his first meet.

  3. Big week in terms of PRs for me…really hoping to make a push for a 1k total by my 18th birthday (May 4th). I’m going to do everything I can to get there, but I also have a ton of studying to do with AP testing approaching, so it’s going to be really tough. I should definitely get it by summer.

BW: 181-182 ish, hasn’t been moving, but I’ll fix that
    Squat: 285 x 3
    Bench: 210 x 5 (ramped with 5’s)
    Deadlift: 355 x 5
    Press: 155 x 5 (ramped with 5’s)
    Chins: 188 x 11 (I think this is a reps PR)
    Front Squat: 245 x 3 (ramped with 3’s)

Only major lift that hasn’t been moving for me is Power Cleans, but hopefully those will start moving with my BW.

  4. Started linear progression again this week.
    Second workout was:

    Squat: 117.5 3×5 (across), 105 10×3 (90%), 130 5×2 (110%)

going to switch to : working weight, 110% WW for 5 – 15 reps total, 90% WW for 20 – 30 reps total

  5. PRs
    Deadlift: 435 x 5
    Bench: 200 x 5,5,6
    Press: 145 x 5,5,5

Press and DL are from 2 weeks ago I have lifted once in the 2 weeks since as I was sick last week and this week only got lifting in monday where I hit the bench pr. Didn’t lift friday as I am throwing in a highland games today for the first time and from the guys I have been throwing with that have experience I should do pretty damn well for a beginner.

  6. BW – 183
    Deadlift – 490

Also, I’ve decided to get serious about training for the Olympic lifts. My numbers are pretty crappy right now, but I’m enjoying it.

    Snatch – 175#
    Clean and Jerk – 215#
