PR Friday
Submit your week’s personal records to the comments. Or say hi. Or update us on your training. Or talk about football. Especially talk about football, because Brent doesn’t like football (conversely, football doesn’t like Brent).
Beard of the Day
Update: Oops, stuff came up. Training, errands, and F-22 Raptor pilot graduation. I’m sorry I’m not sorry.
PRs on meet day – USAPL Maryland States
squat – 385
bench – 275
deadlift – 451
Brent, was that you loading and spotting? Thanks bro!
yes, that was me loading and spotting, wasn’t able to compete because of the 60 lifter cap and in-state lifters having priority over guest lifters
met a couple of guys from 70s big, and i think all of them had pretty good meet days … at least two that i met, Jason and his brother, were at their first meets and both PRed
i asked Jason how he was doing after the benching i think and he said he was doing fine, after having PRed in the squat and i think the bench, he mentioned something about a knee pain but it being no big deal and that he was still good to deadlift and i said, “well yeah, fuck it, we’ll do it live”
Jason also said to me as i passed by “spotting isn’t a sport” which was definitely an LOL for me
also re: RoryT and Cainiac, YES, “hey man what’s your stack” is a legit way to greet a fellow powerlifter
@DaveG – Yes, I was being sarcastic. I spent that $1000 a year ago, and I still wish that I had it back. It is true that the certificate has gold foil on it, and it is true that I like shiny things, though.
@Maslow,
There is the Baltimore Open on January 8th (olympic lifting) and the Navy open sometime in February (?), which is PL. MD powerlifting website has some details, I haven’t looked at the surrounding states yet.
“Hey man what’s your stack?” followed by “O geez I guess I’ve got a few years of training before I should ever ask that question again”…
There’s USAPL Virginia Open on Feb 26 in Zion Crossroads (Charlottesville)
I’ll be at that one.
@dcurrin-
I’ll be there too. The VA States in September was my first PL meet. Very fun.
Is there a website that has info on the Baltimore Open?
Thanks caniac and dcurrin. I’ve been hoping to find a meet that includes squat, deadlift and bench. Is this a lost cause? It seems like most of them are bench, strict curl and maybe deadlift.
Update: Just found this one that has the three big lifts. http://www.usaplvirginia.com/PDFMeetInfo/Brute%20Strength%20Gym%20Stars%20and%20Stripes%202011.pdf
This info is so scatterred around the internet.
Also this one:

You guys think USAPL is ok for a first timer? My friend advised against them since apparently they’ve got the strictest judging.

Long time reader of the site… first post. Started lifting about 4 years ago at 118lbs. Weighed in yesterday at 185lbs. Looking forward to getting to the 200 mark…
BP 245lbs x 6
DL 465lbs
Squat 365 lbs x 5
@Maslow
If you practice the calls and form before the meet you won’t have any problems. Do your research on the rules, train with people who have been there, watch videos, and know your weights and lifts. It was my first time, it was no sweat because we were all prepared. You don’t need to go for the gusto, just get your feet wet. Think of it in the macrocycle. This is the beginning of more. Competition is the best training, your first competition will set you up for future success.
^^Thanks buddy. I just read the rules and I’m going to give it a shot! Maybe I’ll see you there.
@ThunderThighs
Farve is over 40 and been playing pro football for 20 years. You really can’t get more resilient than that.
@ThunderThighs
Farve squats and deadlifts. He’s also got the consecutive games record, having started in 296 consecutive games. Farve could totally be in the 70s Big Hall of Fame if you ask me.
Should have thought of this question on friday but oh well… So I’m progressing nicely on my deadlift doing 3×3 work sets. I’m still making 15 lb. jumps weekly but am starting to feel the beatdown on my body and can tell the increases are going to lessen. At some point should I switch to one work set or keep plugging away with my 3×3 workset scheme. What say you peeps?
Squat- 475 x 1
Bench- 375 x 1 with press call
Deadlift- 465 x 1
All Raw
@PM
Take a rest dude! It sounds like you’re killing it, fo sho. DL is a tough lift, do something else for a week, rest and heal, then test your single.
Slow on the uptake…
DL 190# x 3
