New Shirt for the Ladies

A shirt made specifically for women is now available for pre-sale (orders will begin shipping next Friday). The Bella brand shirt is a thinner, softer cotton that form fits to the body with cap sleeves and a modest v-neck (not blatant cleavage). The shirt comes in two flavors, light and dark, and each is emblazoned with the image:

This shirt allows the affectionate women to display their preference for a delightfully muscular man in their life as well as their appreciation for 70’s Big. The light shirt is baby blue with a pink heart while the dark shirt is plum with off-white font and a light pink heart.

  1. Food PR:
    1 lb of porchetta
    .5 lb of beef
    .5 lb of chicken
and a second plate of potatoes and pasta

DL PR of 500 (finally, half a ton)
    Squat 385×3

  2. no real PR’s this week.

Olympic meet tomorrow morning, hopefully setting some PR’s. Lifting form has been off lately, so hitting my numbers will be big, PR’s will be huge.

  3. My BW is up to 246lbs. I used the belt for the first time today in the squat, and it really felt good.

I’m at an in between point in my linear progression. I’ve reset my press twice and my bench once. I have a lot let in the DL and squat, so I need to decide if I’m just going to keep resetting or modify my programming. I’ve added dips and chins to my program over the last week, so maybe that will have some effect.

    Bench: 110kilos 3X5

Remember that you can move lifts like squat or deadlift to a more intermediate program while keeping presses to a linear type program (or visa versa). I’d like to see your bench continue to increase (it should push your press up slowly too).

  4. Does the shirt come with a woman?

    Back squat
    370# x 1 (PR)

    Bench press
    275# x 1 (PR)

    USAPL Meet in 8 days.

    @ Shrugthug
I noticed you were on the roster for the Maryland States Meet on November 20th, now you are gone. I was looking forward to meeting your traps, er, you. Are you in or not?

Sadly there is no woman with the shirt. Your 70’s Bigness should attract one if you are persistent.

  5. PRs:
    Deadlift: 330# x 5
Overhead Press: 130# 3×5 –tied PR
Barbell Row: 150 3×8–still working up to weight that’s actually very hard, but this was still a PR.

    Active Recovery/Food PR:
My parents took me out to the best Italian Restuarant I’ve ever been to. I had four courses for 3000-4000 calories. For the first round I had amazing homemade bread with way too much olive tapenade, and then an appetizer sampler which included crostini (white beans and herbs on toast), two little fried risotto “dumplings” with melted taleggio cheese inside (nearly had an Arnold), carpacio (raw beef slices) with mixed greens, and pancetta with buffalo mozzarella. For pasta I had homemade hollow spaghetti with butter/herb cream sauce and pancetta. And for a main I had huge roasted venison loin, marinated in whole cherries that had been aged in red wine grapa. AAAAAaamazing. I also had two Anchor Steams and three glasses of fantastic chianti and a kickass frothy cappuccino.

Bodyweight Consistency PR: I’ve now been over 185 consistently for two months. I’m going to do GOMAD again in a few weeks to try to get up to 200 lbs. If I do that, I’ll order one of those shirts for my girl.

Clothing PR: I went and got measured for a new suit last night. I’ve gone from being a 38 regular to being 44 with an athletic cut and shortened sleeves. Costs more but it’s worth it. I also went to Macy’s fur closet. Yes, we’re talking HUGE beaver, lamb and fox fur coats. I tried a bunch on and in the unshorn full length beaver I looked like fucking Jeremiah Johnson. I urgently need $6000 so I can buy one.

I don’t know what all those Italian foods are, but it sounds good. And I just recently had Anchor Steam for the first time, and it is top notch.

  6. Have the new men’s shirts been shipped yet?

If you ordered in the pre-order, yes. There may have been a few sizes that had to wait for the second order.

    –Justin

  7. Deload week this week (first one in over two months). So no lifting PRs. Will be starting 5/3/1 this weekend, so should have a whole new batch next week. Good times ahead!

  9. Injury PR:

Went in to the gym tired and got taco’ed by 320 lbs. on my third rep. As I was falling forward, my dumb instinct to take a step forward instead of just bailing took over, and I pinned one leg in a very awkward position.

I had to seriously twist to get out from under the bar (on the spotter pins), and in turn sprained the fuck out of my knee/ankle.

Been hobbling for about a week, went in and did 135 lbs. for maybe 50 yesterday.

  10. Apologies for an off topic post, but advice is urgently needed.

Competing for a spot at wildland firefighting academy that requires daily (M-Th) 3 mile runs.

Suggestions how to not completely lose my hard earned strength gains are appreciated.

So far, my best idea is to squat and as heavy as possible on Fridays and press on Saturdays (I’d rather have two days to recover from squats before running again on Monday) to try and mitigate the damage.

More importantly, are you in shape for the running yet?

    –Justin

  11. Biggest reversal of fortune PR:

Experienced some neck pain and shoulder pain/weakness. My new health insurance is pretty good so I decided to check it out. Five doctors later, I am officially retired from all lifting at age 26. Curvature in my neck is gone, three discs are destroyed, and my spinal cord is being compressed.

    Lifetime PR (9/19/10)
    Snatch: 86kg
    Clean & Jerk: 105kg
    Total: 191kg

Thanks for the inspiration, 70s Big. Finding this sport made these past 10 months some of my best.

  12. ooh, i like the shirt! i’m thinking by the end of the month my cute new armpit hair will stick out under the cap sleeves!

The other day I remembered that you said something about armpit hair. I couldn’t remember if it was ThunderThighs or not, and I seriously contemplated sending you an e-mail saying, “Hey, I know you’re probably just kidding, but…don’t do that…”

  13. Sweet shirts! I’m putting my order in today.
So, apparently I love guys that are 70’s Big a little too much (husband is an adult male at 220) because I’m pregnant with our second.
I’m going to try to continue my linear progression for as long as I can. Once my body says no more I think I’ll just try to maintain strength and maybe add some conditioning work.
If anyone out there has advice about training safe during pregnancy I would appreciate it. I looked around on line a little and wasn’t able to find any solid advice. Please don’t tell me to ask my doctor because he is a 90’s small marathon runner who doesn’t think anyone should lift heavy – great doctor though.
I’ll definitely be hitting some eating PR’s in a few weeks once the nausea part of the pregnancy goes away.

  14. My commander sent a picture of a couple hooligans from COP Narizah, Afghanistan and was posted on your wall. Had a PR friday with my Section, Bench 325 Squat 425 Deadlift 520…all PRs

My wall? Or the 70’s Big Fan Page wall? I looked, but couldn’t find it.

  15. A couple months ago my friend sent me photos of a girl he recently met and become smitten by. He’d grabbed them off of facebook quickly. I instantly noticed armpit hair sticking out in the second photo. Bad armpit hair. Not like, oh shit I haven’t shaved in a week, but more like “oh shit I joined a commune and also I don’t use soap.” He hoped it was just a phase or something, and since the photo was undated he gave her the benefit of the doubt. When she came over I challenged her to do a chin up on our hallway chin up bar since she had very short sleeves on her shirt like the one above. She could do three chin ups…impressive for a girl these days, and the hair had been shaved. I decided she was A OK, but only because she banged out 3 chin ups with strict form. …she ended up being psycho though.

This story should entertain most people.

    P.S. I lol’d at the last sentence.

    –Justin

  16. I tied my Snatch Pr at 165lbs last tuesday. I don’t train the snatch specifically at all so it was nice to see I haven’t gone downhill. failed attempting 170lbs for one. the bar was forward a bit on the misses. In video my feet shifted back a bit without the bar coming with, and although i was getting the triple extension, my weight must not have been back enough.

PR powercleaned 235lbs. 10 lb pr. same thing i think i am gettin the full extension but just leaving my weight out front a bit.

I’ve read that the elbows are supposed to be turned out a bit in the setup for snatch and clean to help keep the bar close, but I find my pull lacks power. only tried it a couple times so it’s most likely just being uncomfortable and inexperienced with the elbows.

Just so we’re clear, the inside of your elbow will point in and your body part will point out. You don’t have to think about keeping it like that, just turn them a bit when you’re setting up. If you’re getting screwed up you may be over-emphasizing the cue.

  17. First meet last Saturday:

    Squat: 385 (tied gym PR)
    Bench: 265 (tied gym PR)
    Dead: 451 (PR)

The meet was a lot of fun and the people were all really helpful and friendly. I highly recommend it. I can’t wait to do another one.

  18. Sadly, injured my rotator cuff so no pressing, pulling etc for a week at least.

Bought a 4lb pack of ground beef at whole foods and finished it in three days. Invented new meal in the process: Pizza chili

1lb of ground beef sautéed with sundried tomatoes, onion and a can of tomato sauce. mix in tons of mozzarella at the end. I’ll send pics. It breaks up the routine of regular chili and CFS. Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.

Dude, Chabal is a beast…I’d hate to be the All Blacks in this scrum:

    1. How’d you injure the cuff?
    2. Interesting chili idea. I’ll accept it.
    3. That picture is terrifying.

  19. PR in depression.

I have been training for MD state championships in my first powerlifting meet and I had a solid shot at getting the record for the squat. In my weight class the record was 90 kg, and I tested at 100 kgs a few weeks ago. Now I sent in my meet entry on time but they ostensibly did not receive it before they were filled up and despite an a pleading email about wanting to do my first meet, I’m out. Instead I will be going to meet coach a number of the lifters from our gym. It’ll be a good experience either way, but I was really looking forward to competing. I’m going to do a mini meet on the Friday before, so hopefully I will get some PRs even if they are unofficial.

Love the ladies shirt, but did both versions have to have pink? I hate pink, but will get one anyway, because I support 70’s big men.

I can’t please ’em all, darlin’.

    –Justin

  20. @ kpow1979…congrats on the pregnancy!
Just my 2 cents(I’m NOT qualified to give medical advice, btw) about training while pregnant…
    One concern might be
joint instability/tendon laxity because of the hormone changes…and then later when you get bigger that could change the how you move. So I guess my point is that there could be an increased risk of injury.
QUOTE:”I’m going to try to continue my linear progression for as long as I can. Once my body says no more I think I’ll just try to maintain strength and maybe add some conditioning work.”
^^^I think that sounds pretty sensible…
    Best wishes!

Yeah, I’d agree that advancing into each trimester should limit more lifting and intensely moving around.

  21. No PR’s this week unless you want to count a “crappiest bench day ever” PR…and a “deadlift officially stalled” PR ;)
I’m blaming it on having a cold. :)

Also…I really like the new women’s shirts BUT I have 2 problems.
    1. Sadly my 128 lbs/6′ husband is not very 70’s big and he has a jealous streak…
    2. I think I’m a long ways from squeezing into a size L. Maybe by next summer. :)

No worries guys. I’m just in the mood to complain.
    Have a great weekend everyone!

I have the ability to order different sizes. The first order was a small one to get an idea for the sales.

  22. no PRs for awhile for me, been out about 3 weeks with a groin injury coupled with a ridiculous work schedule. Looking forward to being back in the gym Monday with a big reset and hopefully getting past my last stopping point.

smithb9 – good luck at your meet this weekend man, look forward to you posting how it goes for you.

I found an unsanctioned powerlifting competition up here in Maine that I’m planning on checking out. It’s in March and will be my first my meet and hopefully a good starting point. It’s about 3 hours north of me, but comps. aren’t exactly commonplace up here so I’ll take what I can get. Anyone have experience with unsanctioned meets? I’m hoping it’s not mickey mouse and is run fairly legit. On the website they say they are keeping it unsanctioned to keep the price down. It’s $50 if you register in January, with reg increases in Feb. and March. Info can be found here if there’s any others interested: http://www.mainegames.org//uploads/552468_2011_EVENT_INFO,_POWERLIFTING.pdf

  23. 1. How’d you injure the cuff?

    1. Not sure, just kept getting progressively sore during bench and shoulder press or while doing pull ups. Not sure if its torn or just inflammation. I’m going through PT and rehabbing the crap out of it – I also found some great rehab protocols on Rip’s forum.
    2. Thanks
    3. In my 70sBig fantasy world, I want Chabal to fight Clay Matthews III. Just because.
    4. I live three blocks from the anchor steam brewery. It IS awesome.

Depending on how you’ve been training, you may have been overtraining them. I’m also curious about your form.

    –Justin

  24. Justin,
I’m pretty set for the runs, it’s in cadence at a 8min per mile pace. Before I was 70s Big, I was an endurance athlete and then running is coming back to me pretty quickly.

  25. Press PR 80×5 87.5×3
    Squat PR 195×5 215×3

Competition in 3 weeks, so training is pretty event specific- lots of plyometric events, weight events are comfortably in reach. Vertical leap? …coming along…

    kpow1979-
Congratulations! How exciting for you and your family!
As your weight training changes I recommend checking out crossfitmom.com
At the very least it is a community of women that are pregnant and in training and committed.
It’s got lots of ideas of substitutions and adjustments to make as your body changes for both weight training and conditioning.
I trained with friend of mine through her whole pregnancy. She continued competing into the 5th month! Her first substitutions were on push ups and sit ups, just so her belly didn’t get in the way :) By the end she was still weight training and conditioning, just at more moderate weights and intensity. I’m sure you’ll know how to listen to your body and your baby to find the right balance. Good luck and congratulations again!
