Today’s Forecast…A TEASE!

Some of you woke up yesterday and were appalled that there wasn’t a post. I was completely spent after the 12 hours of coaching on Sunday along with being exhausted by interacting with my friends (Gant knows). I constantly was trying to put them in or keep them in a positive state of mind for lifting.

I’m not impressed with my coaching from the weekend and think I could have done a better job. I’m not going to get into it today because I just spent the day traveling from Denver to Panama City, but you can look at some of the updates that I posted from most of the weekend on Twitter.

Overall, things went pretty well. Brent went 7/9 with PR’s on all his lifts, AC won second overall in the 220lb Open class, Mike went 7/8 and had big PR’s on all his lifts as well as winning 5th in the 242lb Open category, and Chris won second overall in the 275lb Junior category. Good, tough lifting out of those four.

We did a bit of filming throughout the weekend (not as much so that there weren’t any distractions from Sunday’s lifting), and AC will be cut together an excellent short film. He’s already created a sweet teaser:

  1. Wait a minute, you’re not impressed with your coaching, but you had 2 guys get 2nd in their class, and one 4th. Everyone hit PR’s? In a national fucking competition? Sounds to me that you, and everyone else, did an excellent job.

I made too many mistakes. I could have gotten more out of them.

  2. Awsome vid AC!!

It’s definatley getting me in the mood for enterting my first competition. Just need to get my lifts abit higher before I enter …

  3. I agree with Simon. Those are some really good results. I saw AC and Brent lift (via the video feed), both were impressive. I wish I had been near a comp when the other guys were lifting. There was some serious competition there. Y’all did a fantastic job.

Did any of you talk to that David Green fellow? Poor guy had some really good lifts on squat/bench, and instead of locking up a total, he went 0/3 on a DL of 700 pounds. He was trying to break his own record, I know, but… man, bombing out must have hurt.

  4. That cat that beat AC was a monster… 772.5 kg total.

Good lifting by all, man, I have some serious work to do.

AC, why did you lift in the Open division instead of Jr?

Like many things, I forgot to sign up for it. Whoops. That cat was also 39 years old. I’m only 21.

  5. Sorry AC, didn’t mean to question your manhood, was merely trying to state the caliber of lifting it took to defeat you…

    I didn’t mean to come off harsh if I did . . . I still love you

  6. Sad, I was looking forward to another great write up by Justin, but I’ll live.
    Damn good job by all.

I’m gonna do a write up. Wasn’t going to do it last night after traveling though. I don’t think I’m gonna do story format though unless you guys liked it last time. It takes a long time.

  7. Damn impressive boys! Can’t wait to see the full video. Anyone here know of any upcomming powerlifting competitions in the western Canada area (preferably in BC)?

  8. Derek – Why not come down to a WA USAPL meet? Kittensmash and I will both be competing in some in the near future.

Brent, Chris, Mike, and maybe Justin – Awesome job, Men. I want to hear some stories, though, as I begin the process of getting to Nats next year myself. AC looked like he almost had that 2nd DL attempt – why no third? Justin – I was glad to hear you yell “WAIT!” at Brent during the squats. I couldn’t believe half his flight racked too early on the first attempt. Finally…Brent, why are you so awesome? The people want to know.

Ace, Mike, and Chris are only good for two deadlift attempts. It would be folly to attempt a third unless we took the last warm-up on the platform. Although AC missed his lift because he let it drift forward, he was fried.

I have an idea to possibly improve this to having enough for a third attempt, or just helping them to be more fresh for the second.

Glad you put me in with the list of people who did awesome.

  9. Justin…now you’re scaring me. First, you title today’s post using the word “tease.” Then you talk about your ideas to keep your lifters “fresh.” I’m pretty sure I know where this is going – more speedo sightings, right?

You should already know that the title of today’s post is a reference to Arnold playing Mr. Freeze in the comically terrible “Batman and Robin”.

I do not deny or verify the frequency, intensity, or volume of speedo sightings.

    –Justin

    Awesome.

  10. AC – I was reserving a special post for you as super-awesome, but you ruined it. So nevermind. You did “OK” I guess.

A special post huh? One of us in in deep trouble.

  11. I’m a graphic designer for a small firm. 8 years experience and a college degree allow me to edit pictures of lifters while i work.

Nice. Well, we’re enjoying the pictures. I’m about to e-mail you.

  12. Great meeting you guy. I was coaching Jeremy Leonard, competing against Chris in the 275 juniors. They were really close going into the deadlifts and I was looking forward to a pull-off for the title.

  13. I love that the trailer has the Inception music in it. I literally could not approve more. I want to thumbs up my own comment right now.

  14. Justin, to get guys to have 3 DL attempts usually the numbers work something like this.

    last warmup
    20-25kg jump
    10-15kg jump

so if AC was hoping to hit 275 he could go 240-260-275, where the 240 would probably not take much if anything out of him and the 260 would be a good stepping stone to the 275. I wish I had a more recent video of myself as to what a first deadlift should look like, but this one from a couple years ago should suffice.

Its basically just a warmup weight on the platform, but thats how I’ve done it and its worked for me.

I understand this, but they opt to take their last warm-up in the warm-up room.

  15. I was really looking forward to anther story format, but can understand how much time that would take.
And as Jacob mentioned (okay, so he never mentioned it, but I’m hoping to distribute some of the blame for my homo erotic post his way), this whole keeping your lifters fresh idea, sounds a bit like “fluffing” in porn. I suppose you could say you are the fluffer of the PL meets (no homo of course).

  16. If you have the time, the story format was entertaining and I enjoyed it. I’m sure others enjoyed it as well. But if you don’t have the time, it’s understandable.

  17. An argument for taking the final warmup on the platform is that if the warmup bar is not the same bar as the competition bar then it makes a lot of sense to take it on the platform. IE: You are warming up with a Texas Power Bar in the WU room, but there is an Eleiko Power Bar on the platform or Ivanko where the feel will be different. Better to get a feel for the proper bar with a last warmup on platform than in the back on the other bar. Especially important in federations that use a deadlift bar that don’t have any in the warmup room.

This is a good point that I should have taken into consideration. Thanks bud. So far nobody has complained about the disparity, but I know the bars were different this past weekend and it would make sense to get used to the comp bar.

  18. Where is that epic music from?

It’s the Inception trailer theme. I recommend you see that movie.

    –A.C.

    i don’t

    – brent

Brent hasn’t even seen the movie. He’s just a pain in the ass.
