May Challenge Results

Results are in. The top 5s are:

Women [135# squat/95# bench/135# deadlift]
Kate W. (126 total reps)
Jenny L. (124)
Mary P. (98)
Robbie (96)
Amanda C. (90)

Tanks [315# squat, bench, deadlift]
Shon P. (76)
vandy676 (54)
powerlifter54 (50)
Gant (44)
Captain Ronn (36)

Open [225# squat, bench, deadlift]
Levi (98)
Quadzilla (93)
Buddy Holly (75)
elijah (70)
Drew0786 (69)

I took results from everywhere I could find them. Most were in the Challenge thread, but there were a few strays, including a couple friends that posted on my Facebook page.

I have attached a spreadsheet with the results of the May Challenge. The first page is the absolute rankings in each division. The next two pages are ranked by weight class (I used PL classes just because).

The results are interesting. The women up at CrossFit Works killed this thing, which is to be expected given their high rep, high volume training with the weights used here. I don’t know Levi’s or Quadzilla’s training background, but they outpaced the open division by 20 reps. Hopefully they’ll chime in here. As for the tanks, powerlifter54 is a very accomplished powerlifter (and a great source of lifting knowledge) who did this during a light week in preparation for a Navy fitness test. I don’t know anything about vandy676 other than he is a large man. Shon P. (I estimated his weight) is a friend of mine who I asked to do this. He ran away with the tank division. I’ll profile him next week, but I’ll leave it to you to guess his training background in the comments.

Thanks again to everyone who participated. Enjoy your June and look for more silliness in July.

PS If anyone can tell me how to attach an spreadsheet to WordPress, I’d be glad to do it.

  1. That picture is awesome – I am totally looking up that gym next time I’m in AZ. Glad to see we have a bunch of crazy strong folks on this site, especially the ladies! I’m bummed I couldn’t participate in this contest, but I’ll make up for it soon.

  2. Our gym loved the challenge. This might be the place to acknowledge my programming inspirations and mentors. I do the programming for our Affiliate and my chief influences are Coach Rut’s MEBB, Starting Strength and CF Football, so this might explain why we take to a 70s Big Challenge like scorpions to the desert. We also love visitors so come and see us Jacob.

  3. I agree, nice pic. I used to live like 5 seconds from that place, on Malvern! I wonder if it existed back then…I moved away in May 2007.

  4. Since its Friday, I’ll post my PRs.

Been sick this week, and didn’t have it in me to squat or DL heavy, so only pressed.

    2RM 79.5kg.

  5. PVC that’s probably because it’s hard to squat and deadlift 1.5-2.0xBW for 15 reps. The muscles aren’t big enough to store the fuel. Or in my DL’s case, my hands.

  6. I’ll be honest, that pic just makes me jealous. I have some stupid strong women that I train with, but they’re not 70s Big Mentality yet and MY score suffered from “one unbroken set” mentality. Sad but true. With all respect to Gant, I wish there was a June Comp to set myself to, but I see alternating months as a reasonable standard. …Even if some of us had to lay off April to compete in CF Regionals… and all competition scheduals are subjects to change… Go!, Fight!, Win!

  7. In lieu of a PR friday post I’ll bang it in here.

    Squat: 3 x 5 @ 135kg
    Bench: 5 x 3 @ 87.5kg

Through the point where I got stuck previously and cruising in the sunlit uplands of twice weekly PR’s. Well, for this week anyway. Hopefully hit three plates on the squat this coming week.

Out of interest, how far did people get on the basic SS, 3 x 5 template? I’m sure this differs from person to person, but just after some examples of how far others have taken it.

  8. yyyaaaaaayyy i got 4th in the open division. jesus christ Levi why didnt u compete in the tank division?! 98 reps @ 225! BEAST MODE. my bodyweightweight is listed @ 225 but i weigh 203….

  9. Elijah,

Your question is a contagious question. I do not know why; and I now cannot resist finding an answer. Although the competition is over, I can still have a go at 315#, same rules. I’ll give it a go inside 30 days. (That being said, I feel, that none of the results I post should be compared to the results for the competitors. Chiefly, because it seems unfair.)
