TSC Results and May Challenge: Total 225

I got to the gym late today, so I didn’t realize Justin was out. Sorry.

Thanks to all who participated in the TSC. Thanks to Antigen for compiling results.

It was a good first outing. I’m pleased to report that all the guys pulled at least three wheels and most weighed in >200 (JasonR didn’t but kicked almost everyone’s ass anyway).

A special shout-out to the three ladies who competed. They deadlifted 225, 275, and 305, with Heidi adding 13 pullups and 100 snatches. Solid, solid performance.

This month is going to be the Total 225 Challenge. The format is simple:
* Squat 225 for max reps
* Bench 225 for max reps
* Deadlift 225 for max reps

Squats are full depth (crease of hip below top of knee). Bench presses must touch the chest then be locked out at the top. DLs should be done with iron if possible. You can touch and go, but NO BOUNCING (that’s you, crossfitters). DL stops when you let go of the bar or take more than 3 seconds between attempts. No straps.

This can be scaled if necessary. Women can do, I don’t know, 135? (Somebody suggest something here).

Males-in-training can do 185. But really, you need to get at least one damn rep with 2 plates per. It is your destiny.

  1. This month’s challenge will have me cussing more than the Sheik. I am scared to see how far I can push 225 squats and deads, even though I’ll get fewer than 10 reps on bench. I’m sure several people will get over 100 reps total, easily. DOMS much?

I’m more excited about growing out the stache, to be honest. And grow it I shall.

  2. The Iron Sheik used work out every now and then at the gym I was going to at the time, Lee Haney’s, in Atlanta. He’d come in with a little old beat up gym bag, wearing 70’s style gym shorts, stained t-shirt and bandanna. He stunk of Ben Gay and creaked and cracked around the gym. People left him alone.

  3. Hahahaha, the Sheik is fucking ape-shit crazy. I like him. And this months challenge sounds horribly painful. Did I accidentally click on the CF site? Nevermind, it would say 95lbs if I did.

  4. If Squat and Deadlift are 135, women should probably bench 85-95 for this.

95 is probably preferred because it uses a “big”(er) plate.

But then again, two tens is like a miniature 225.

Let the girls decide I guess.

  5. I think it would be cool if 70sbig interviewed some famous 70sbig guys.

For example, speaking of wrestling with the Iron Sheik above, one guy that comes to mind is Scott Hall a.k.a Razor Ramon. If you grew up in the 90’s and watched the organization formerly known as the WWF you will remember him. He’s 6’7 and pretty damn strong. Plus, he has his own youtube tv show already now, so I’m sure he would be up for it. It would be good promotion for him.
I don’t think it would have to be as fancy as Rip’s interviews all done in a nice studio, it could just be a recorded video chat over skype or something along the lines of using regularly available free technology.
Interviews with famous 70s big strong men would just make this whole 70’s big movement just that much more awesome.

I didn’t know Scott Hall had a show. I actually did the Razor’s Edge to someone on a judo mat.

It should please you to know that I wrote a persuasive paper (I took beginning rhetoric and comp my senior year in college) on why the Kevin Nash should be reinstated to the WCW and why the Jacknife Power Bomb should be legalized. My professor said it was the only time she was angry about giving someone an “A.”

  6. I don’t think touch and go should be allowed. There is no way we can prevent a bouncing, but I guess iron plates would help prevent it. Maybe dead stop if you’re using bumpers?

  7. Updated the results page…
Added 2 people who had posted only in PR Friday and one late.

This didn’t change 1st or 2nd but shook up the rest of chart a bit.

  8. Sicck. I’ll be doing this one before the 16th, then in Greece for a couple weeks with family.

Any suggestion/recommendations for a 2-week break like that? I want to come back home and get started right where i left off.

I was planning to eat a metric ton of Greek food, bring my olympic rings and work on some bodyweight stuff, sprints, and short metcon crossfit. If there’s a decent gym on Rhodes, maybe I can stop in for a heavy day or 2 after the first week of rest.

I have rested 13 straight days with no ill effects. One week will do you good. Two weeks might set you back a workout or two. Point is, enjoy the rest, enjoy your vacation, and have a good time in Greece. If you want to do a bodyweight routine every other day, fine. Otherwise, forget training while you’re there and enjoy the country.

I agree. You’re traveling for gods’ sakes. Enjoy it. Have a light/medium day when you get back and ease into training.

  9. The Sheik is a crazy man!

Now about this challange, I have some problem with my elbow/shoulder that is making any pushing movement damn near impossible so my numbers are going to blow on bench but hopefully I can make up for it with my squats and DLs….we’ll see

    Don’t hurt yourself, dingelberry.

  10. Oh yeah one quick question: What is the rest supposed to look like. I think this needs to be addressed so that everyone has the same amount of time to recover. You can’t really compare efforts if one guy took minimal rest between the 3 efforts and one guy took 10 minutes…

  11. Gant – I like that idea. Hell, have a 405 division, and see if anyone is man enough to do it. Unfortunately, my bench is still under 315 by a good chunk, so I’ll be playing with the 2 wheelers.

  12. I’m deciding myself. I just started benching again. I pressed 240×11, so I ought to be able to at least double three wheels. I can also see squatting 315×18 then failing on the bench and having to do the whole damn thing over again.
