Chris’ Mishap, Strength+

Chris’ Mishap

Chris just left for a much needed vacation before he dials his training in to get ready for the USAPL Raw National Championship in July. He and his family were planing the plane (which must be the opposite of the term “de-plane” the flight attendants always use), and Chris found himself in a precarious situation. After he shambled down the aisle of the plane and squeezed himself into the seat row, he made an attempt at sitting down. Buuuuuut, he couldn’t. You see, his 6′, 275 pound body didn’t fit in the seat. What could they do?

Well, this is a guy who broke five chairs in a week’s time not too long ago. Between going to school, training at the gym, and drinking beer at a bar, Chris managed to render five chairs inoperable…on accident. So what the hell were they doing to do with him on the plane?

Clearly the only solution was to move him to first class. It makes sense, after all. Do not anger the large man. Do what he says. Oh, you want some beer on your flight? Yes sir, Mr. 70’s Big, right away sir. Anything else sir?

Yes it’s true, the quest to 70’s Big has its perks.

Chris means business

Strength+ Magazine

There’s a new online magazine that is dedicated to Olympic Weightlifting that just started. This is good because there aren’t many resources for American weightlifting, and that’s unfortunate. The magazine is called “Strength+” and is written and edited by Rachel Crass and Robert Hall. This first issue has a few athlete articles (notably on Kendrick Farris, the superstar of American weightlifting), an article about the French national team, and results and photos from the Arnold Classic.

Click here for the debut issue.

  1. chris’ scowl is the best i’ve seen but could’ve been meaner if he had facial hair

Alas! His facial hair is that of a 13 year old boy. His sideburns don’t connect. Nobody is more upset by this than him. His Darwinian solution was to change the structure of his face to frighten his enemies.

  2. That’s awesome. Kevin Smith, director of jay and silent bob etc. actually got kicked off a southwest flight because he was too big for the seat. Glad to hear that 70s big gets preferential treatment over non-70s big.

  3. LOL @Chris’ story.

Good link btw, To my knowledge, I don’t think there’s many good quality Strength magazines anymore.

Noted. Important to point out that this one is Olympic lifting focused, and some times Oly lifters don’t have an emphasis on strength. We’ll see what happens with this mag.

  4. Strength+ is not very good. The CF comics were retarded, and one guy they interview says (from the French team) talks about how their key to success was doing a million singles at 60%.

Hey, it’s about weightlifting. Maybe it will make people interested in it.

  5. Chris you look pregnant. Lose the baby.

He’s sticking it out in the picture. Chris doesn’t have much fat on his belly, and has some crazy thick abdominal muscles.

  6. Point #4 in the article on the French team – Be Strong to Lift Strong…being a red blooded American it pains me to say it but perhaps American weightlifting team should follow the French team on this particular point.

Seems like I have read this advice somewhere before…

  7. Not sure what readers are reacting to so negatively regarding Strength +…seems like a pretty good, if very grassroots periodical on OL, and there aren’t exactly a whole bunch of those out there. Plus, who knew the French were so strong!

I may need to get a beret. jk.

  8. love Strength+, great resource

and LOL @ the crossfit comics, they are cheesey but make a great point. whats with all these crossfitters rocking fauxhawks? so gheyZ!

  9. People with fauxhawks like attention. Taking your shirt off and exercising in front of people is the kind of attention they probably like. Crossfit provides that hard to find venue.

  10. the article on the French lifters seems to support everything Rip has been saying about USAW not putting enough emphasis on strength

  11. Justin-
Can you link to this when the new issues come out? I tried to find a way to bookmark it but was not able to find it on the USOC website. Thanks in advance. I’m one of those people that has to bookmark something or I’ll forget about it.

    If I remember I will.

  12. Ouch…Pretty harsh stuff about the mag. Let me know what you’d like to see, and we’ll do our best to get it in there. The July 1 issue will include an article about Westside Barbell’s philosophy and how it relates to Olympic lifting. Powerlifting and bodybuilding have huge fan bases and a ton of magazines out there. Olympic lifting has ONE. Strength+. Sorry if it offends the non-oly lifters in the crowd. Can’t get ’em all, I suppose.
