“If it’s a severed head I’m going to be very upset.”
PR Friday boys and girls. Post your weights lifted, competitions attended, pants splitted and victory dances performed to the comments. We certainly had lots of PR’s for emotional outbreaks in the comments this week.
The 2010 National Master’s Weightlifting Championships is this weekend in Rego Park, New York. I’d like to wish my friend, Dr. Lon Kilgore, a good luck. He has been competing in Olympic weightlifting since he was 11 years old will be competing this weekend in the 85 kg class at 52 years old. You can see the final schedule here as well as the start list (including names and info on the lifters) here (Kilgore is lifting in the 8th session). More Masters’ Weightlifting info can be found at their home page.
Also, I just realized that USAW recently released the 2010 National Championships Entry Form with the tentative schedule. Check it out if you want to see how a big meet with multiple sessions will be set up, along with all of the legal hoopla that goes into submitting an entry for one of these (who knew you weren’t allow to dope blood?).
The new t-shirts should be finishing up later today or on Monday, and I will give updates as I receive the information.
In the mean time, here is a pretty sweet weightlifting video that has the hair, the style, the drama, and some big lifts:

Those are some great numbers for someone your size. Keep up the good work man.
Justin,
congrats on the meet man. At least you got a PR, didn’t bomb out, and got your first meet out of the way.
New PR
Finally started practicing power cleans, worked up to 60kg/135lb
Squat PR from yesterday,
4x150kg
after 2x5x140kg felt too easy.
This despite cutting down about 5 lbs. (195 to 190) in preparation for summer work (treeplanting in the rockies – grueling shit).
I’m going to try really hard to stay above 185 during planting, but it’ll be a battle – nothing burns energy like this. Not to fear though – once summer work is over, I’m making a beeline for 215.
Forgot the front squat PR: 4x105kg
I just started messing around with these last week. Fun exercise (if you have flexibility in the shoulders – being young, I have plenty), but I’m wondering what a normal BS/FS max ratio is?
Mine is 150:105, so a hair under 3:2.
Is this normal, or does it betray a relative weakness in either exercise?
I thought I would be able to do more on the FS given my current BS.
you will be able to back squat more than you front squat. “ratios” will differ from person to person.
@Scottish Dav
This is the result of the antithesis of that woman’s credo:

Fucking beautiful if you ask me.
@ Luc from Canada eh
Planting in the rockies, eh? You ever done it before?
As for maintaining your bodyweight, just make sure you’re downing those PB&Js during bag ups and you’ll be fine :)
This will be my 4th year.
I’m anticipating that my newfound strength will make a noticeable difference and hence a noticeable increase in the $$$ inflow…
In addition to the standard bag up items I’m gonna try homemade super-shakes, bottles filled with trail mix, as well as the usual ungodly huge breakfasts & dinners, and see if that keeps the weight up.
Where do/did you plant?
Deadlift – 170 PR
just getting baseline numbers. Will see how far a linear progression will take me.
@kittensmash,
Thanks for the encouragement. Short term goals are bench 250, squat 350, deadlift 375, press 160. I’ll probably try to keep bodyweight where it is (I know it’s not 70’s big), but if I can’t get to these numbers in the next 2-3 months I’ll think about adding 5-10 lbs.
That video is classic.
I actually know one of the guys who makes a very brief appearance at 1:50.
His name is Don Mitchell and he is a coach at the gym I used to coach at!
