PR Friday

“If it’s a severed head I’m going to be very upset.”

PR Friday boys and girls. Post your weights lifted, competitions attended, pants splitted and victory dances performed to the comments. We certainly had lots of PR’s for emotional outbreaks in the comments this week.

The 2010 National Master’s Weightlifting Championships is this weekend in Rego Park, New York. I’d like to wish my friend, Dr. Lon Kilgore, a good luck. He has been competing in Olympic weightlifting since he was 11 years old will be competing this weekend in the 85 kg class at 52 years old. You can see the final schedule here as well as the start list (including names and info on the lifters) here (Kilgore is lifting in the 8th session). More Masters’ Weightlifting info can be found at their home page.

Also, I just realized that USAW recently released the 2010 National Championships Entry Form with the tentative schedule. Check it out if you want to see how a big meet with multiple sessions will be set up, along with all of the legal hoopla that goes into submitting an entry for one of these (who knew you weren’t allow to dope blood?).

The new t-shirts should be finishing up later today or on Monday, and I will give updates as I receive the information.

In the mean time, here is a pretty sweet weightlifting video that has the hair, the style, the drama, and some big lifts:

Word of the Day: AC Jump

  1. Squat 370#x5, bench 245#x5.

I benched 245#x1 as a 2nd attempt at a meet about a month ago (barely missed 265# on the 3rd), and did the same weight for 5 this week. I’ve got 11 weeks until my next meet, I plan on a 300# bench!

  2. My favorite part of the week was when I said that going from Arnold as Conan the Barbarian to this new guy as Conan the lifeguard is like going from orange Oompa loompas to tiny singing mexicans.

Oh and I can start doing pressing lifts again.

  3. Good luck to all the masters lifters. I got to meet a bunch of US masters lifters at the World Masters Games / Masters World Championships last year and they were a very serious bunch of athletes!

    PRs this week

    530# DL – Beltless PR
    255kg / 562# DL – 2kg PR

  4. Squat 110kgx5x3 PR
    DL 130kgx5x1 PR
    Press 55kgx5x3 PR

The funny thing is that those weights felt really light. GOMAD is doing its job well. Hopefully I will be squatting 135kgx5x3 (300lbs) before my compulsory military service which starts in july.

  5. just look how fast alexseev got out of the hole. indeed strength is the ultimate factor in Olympic lifting. come to think of it why would it be called lifting in the first place if it weren’t a test of strength not technique.

  6. lost 8lbs in 2 days as a result of wisdom teeth extraction
squatted 415×2 sfter 48 hours of narcotics.
squatted 315 for three sets of 10

  7. great video. LOL at Alekseyev standing there getting his huge bulk fanned with a towel.
    rep PRs this week:
    squat 330 for 3 x 5
    bench 237.5 for 3 x 5
    deadlift 375 for 5

  8. Pr Friday:
BW: Consistently at or slightly above 98.
    Snatch: 106
    C&J: 145
Bench: 350×1 @ 8 (technically a PR for an @8 bench, too long to explain but its significant to me)
Sumo DL: 307x1x3 – still 13kg off my conv DL, but only been sumo for 2 weeks
    Olympic BS: 210×3

Do you compete in Oly? If so, why the sumo? Nice DL though.

  9. No PRs yet today, ill work out around 11:30; however, last night was good:

Squat: 320×5 PR then 330×5 PR I think I could have gone heavier if i hadn’t done the set at 320…oh well ill get more next time

    Ring Dips 3xMaxReps 15, 10, 6

Bench: 220×5 def. not a PR-and on the subject of bench, does anyone have some good ideas for getting my numbers back up? I used to be able to bench 295, and then one day I pinched a nerve somewhere in my neck or elbow, the nuerologist couldn’t tell where the problem was. (Go figure, a couple 100 bucks later and I still don’t have any answers)Anyway, my bench has just gone to shit since then and I am working really hard to get it back.

    Thanks-Joe

It might have something to do with the ring dips.

  10. Daaaamn, I was whinging to myslef this morning because I have a few aches and pains when I wake up in the morning. Then I read the competitor list and realized there are a ton of men competing tomorrow who are over twice my age (I’m 41). That list made me STFU and get north of vag, quickly.

    MP: 177.5x5x3
    BP: 262.5x5x3
no progress on squats this week (stayed at 340x5x3), deadlifts tonight.

    QUOTE:
The Claim: For Better Muscle Tone, Go Lighter and Repeat

    THE FACTS

Lifting heavy weights makes you big and bulky — or at least that’s the conventional wisdom. It’s the reason many women (and some men) who want slim and “toned” physiques opt for lighter weights, lifted more times.

But the notion is not supported by science. Producing bulky muscles requires not just heavy weights but heavy calorie consumption as well, typically far above the 2,000 daily calories recommended for many adults.

For people who lift weights to tone up and slim down, experts say, a regimen that includes a combination of challenging weights and fewer repetitions can help significantly. In a 2002 study, for example, scientists looked at what happened when women performed various resistance exercises at different weights and repetitions (85 percent of their maximum ability for 8 reps, versus 45 percent for 15). Subjects lifting more weight fewer times burned more energy and had a greater metabolic boost after exercise.

In another study published last year, scientists followed 122 women for six years. They found that those who were assigned to do resistance exercises three times a week — sets of 8 reps at 70 to 80 percent of their ability — lost the most weight and body fat. A similar two-year study of women who did strength training with challenging weight twice weekly found similar effects on body and “intra-abdominal” fat.

    THE BOTTOM LINE

For better tone, try fewer reps and more challenging weights.

  12. @Stedmaniv

Maybe AC is kind of like Richard from LOST. *gasp*

    Height 5’10
    BW: 200lbs

    PRs:

    Deadlift: 385 1×5 (5 sets of 1 rep)
    Bench: 212.4 5×3 (sad I know)
    Press: 142.4 5×3 (again, sad)

    But it’s progress!

  13. AC that is just unacceptable! Actually nither do I. It used to be really long, then this thing called graduation and a “real job” poped up and I had to chop it off…sigh…

I just felt like a change was appropriate. My dad said “As long as you didn’t cut it because you felt like you had to grow up, you never have to.”

  14. Press – 135x3x5 PR

Another PR, my conditioning has improved dramatically while staying at 190lbs. I thought I was going to lose some weight but it looks like I’m hovering around the same weight (for now). Official weigh in at the gym later.

  15. Went to a class graduation dinner last night and gorged myself. I was 207 at the end of last night but sadly woke up this morning at 202.
    PR’s this week- 330 3 by 5 on Squat
    405 1 by 4 on DL- 212 3 by 5 on Bench
My goddamn school gym has those octagonal plates so repping heaving deads is a huge pain. When I set the weight down it has the tendency to bounce all over the place. Do you all have any suggestions or tips to deal with this shit? I am loving this sight and all of my liner progression gains fueled by milk and hard work.

As far as I know this is just something you will have to deal with for the time being.

    –A.C.

  16. Is anyone attending and/or competing in the USAPL PL meet in Arlington next week? I will be lifting at my first meet in June and thought I would go check it out so I can be better prepared for what to expect.

  17. @AC and Stonewalls,

Count me in the “used to have long hair club”. I actually been working professionally for 5 years before I cut it off.

2 reasons: 1) wanted to look good in a nice suit for my wedding.
    2) I lift in the morning before work, and showering is much easier/faster at the gym with short hair.

    The mornings are WAY easier.

    –A.C.

  18. Homer,
Too true about the showering, that has to be the #2 best thing. Ths #1 best thing is that shorter hair really is alot cooler in the summer, and is a nessesity in Houston with the heat/humidity. Also, I am getting married next weekend! So yeah, the lady probably would have been upset if I was looking like a caveman ya know…

  19. Only 1 weight PR this week:

    Deadlift 180 kg 1×5

However, also a “restored faith in women” PR. A girl at the gym saw me powercleaning, and asked me to instruct her how.

Furthermore, she complimented on how big and manly I look, especially my shoulders and chest. Not a word about abs. Although she doesn’t like beards. I guess nobody’s perfect.

  20. Right hip is fucked, so no squatting for now, but still hit a few minor PR’s.

    PR’s:
Turkish Get Up – 105lb each hand
    Power Snatch – 190lb
    Close Grip Bench – 270×2
Back Squat – Shyeah! As if!

  21. I have my first PL meet tomorrow. I warmed up to my openers, and for the squat and DL they are PRs.
    Squat: 355#
    DL: 175kg.

I’m hoping to get 180 or 182.5 in the squat and 195 in the DL tomorrow. AMERICA!

Uh, but I hope my membership card comes in the mail today. I kind of need it…

  22. I had a 70’s Big night at the gym the other day. Normally the gym I go to is filled with “exercisers”, but this time there were half a dozen lifters, coaching each other on heavy squats. It gave me an idea about what WFAC is like all the time. Awesome.

    PRs
    Press: 135 lbs x 5 x 3
    Press: 137.5 lbs x 5 x 2
    Jerk: 175 lbs x 3

Abs are sore from the presses.

  23. BS 315×6
    SP 145×6
    DL 395×7
    BP 227×8
Also, got another lady at the gym to give Starting Strength a run. She actually came to me wanting to start it. Didnt have to twist her arm or anything. She said she is just tired of being so weak.

  24. I can safely say that the last AC jump I’ll ever take was in November.

I hit a PR DL of 310 with some good struggle at the top, and then called for 325 for the plate milestone and missed it bad.

Hopefully I will never take one again either my friend.
