PR Friday

Howdy everyone. PR Friday — post your weights lifted, gained, or consumed to the comments. There are lots of ideas we have for the website and writing posts, but you’re always welcome to submit ideas as well. Have a jolly weekend.

Here is some snatch footage of the super heavyweight lifters (110+ kg) from the 1989 World Weightlifting Championships to keep you occupied:

  1. Bench 249 x 5 x 3
    Press 162 x 5 x 3
Squat 380 x 5 x 3 (just 5 lbs off my PR workout of 385. If all goes well, I’ll be there come next Wed.)

    BW 254.5 on Monday

I’ve started trying to cut out some of the after lunch carbs and replace with protein as I’m wanting to see if I can slow the weight (chub) gain a little bit. We’ll see how that works.

  2. Love the mentality on this site. Right now I am 6’4 215 with the following PR’s
    Squat 285x5x3
    Deadlift 455×1
    Bench 235x5x3
    Press 150x5x3
    P-Clean 195x3x5
In three weeks Ill be free to pursue my goal of 250 lbs and get a 200 press, 300 bench, 400 squat, and 500 deadlift. After reading this site I finally pulled my head out of my ass and ordered a 13mm Inzer economy belt so Ill be ready to go by the may 2-4.

  3. 6’2″
    205 lbs. (still gaining)

    BS: 285×6
    Press: 140×7
    BP: 185×9
    Deadlift: 355×7

Entering comp in mid July, so working towards that right now.

  4. @jakedivita I’ve failed my 3rd set of 5 reps on my squats for three training days in a row…if not a stall, then what is it?

You need to gain more weight. You will get stronger and progress farther.

  5. BW 228 @ 6ft

    Squat- 320 3×5
    Bench- 215 3×5
    Dead- 360 1×5
    Clean- 185 3×5
    Press- 160 2×5 1×4

Started the week with a sinus infection, glad I made some gains.

  6. PRs, all in lbs:

    Press 100 lbs @ 3 x 5
Squat – no PRs until work on not dropping to the bottom with my knees of the hole and doing a good morning.
    Bench: 135 @ 3 x 5
    Deadlift: 290 @ 1 x 5
    Power Clean: 1 x 3 @ 140

Do you guys have any tips on not dropping to the bottom of the hole? One of my friends told me that im just dropping with my knees. SS said to break at the hips but dont know how to physically do that. I know it would best to correct with a video but i wont be able to shoot videos until May10th.

  7. Hey Justin,

How about a 70’s Big section on the Starting Strength forum?

Topics like 70’s Big style and facial hair. (yeah, that sounds pretty gay, but it can’t possibly be gay if it has to do with getting 70’s big)

Maybe a Q&A section with you and the other 70’s big guys?

  8. Awesome site!

Would afros, tacky jewelry, and leisure suits, driving big cars in addition to eating big and being strong as an ox be considered 70sbig?

What would also be cool is an original 70sbig theme song with a liberal use of the wah-wah pedal.

  9. Backsquat 265×5
    Bench 220×5
    Press 145×5
    Power clean 205×5

Also went to the driving range with some friends and shattered the head of a driver and split a ball in two with one swing… *flex*

  10. HUGE PR for me this week!!!!

I am 32 year old female sitting at about 130#.

    195 x 5 Back Squat!!! Yahoo!!!!

Love the site!!! Focus on strength rather than counting striations has brought my training to the next level. Thanks!!!

  11. @rjnnati

I say we take it one step further and have a proper video intro sequence featuring the 70’s big crew to go with said theme song! As in an intro to an old dodgy 70’s show. I have to admit, a lot of 70’s stuff was a bit before my time, but I’ve seen enough repeats to know there’s some ripper shows that you could look to for material.

Think about it: MASH, starsky and hutch, the 6 million dollar man, charlie’s angels, dukes of hazzard, Kung Fu, the incredible hulk(perfect!) for christ’s sake!!! This is tv gold right here! Or even welcome back, kotter – with rip as mr. Kotter : )

I’ve changed my mind, this is no longer a suggestion. It’s too good an idea and I demand it be moved to a top priority! If you want to see this happen, too, let Justin know in the comments.

Oh also, I believe that in addition to liberal use of the wah-wah pedal, the intro music should definitely feature some jazz flute…

This is A.C. down in the media department of 70sbig.com and I just wanted to let you know I will be in Texas for the summer. I planned on doing multiple videos while I was there, but upon hearing this idea your video suggestion might be on the priority list or at least in the top 5.

  12. @ Vamshi,
To break at the hips think about shutting your car door with your ass when you have your arms full of groceries. Push your ass back as you shove your knees out to the side.

  13. Only good PR for me this week was a 475 deadlift on Monday doing the TSC.
On a gym PR note, got several more people onto the novice progression without even having to twist their arms!

  14. Looking forward to more videos courtesy of AC (no homo).

That being said. I’m going to be in downtown Atlanta for a week in june (for a work related conference). I’ll be staying at the CNN Omni hotel. You happen to know any decent places to train in that area?

I can check, you might get a faster answer from other comments though.

  15. SQ:no PR’s..left knee..orthopod appt Monday…did go from weakening pain doing air squats to doing a set of 5 with 275 though with weakening pain. No where’s near PR land though.

DL:same as SQ…mustered out a 475 pull with the painful crunchy sounding knee

    Bench: 317.5X5X3sets
    Press: 208.75X5x3sets

Bodyweight has been 260 (@ 6-2 height) since February…and it will be May tomorrow. When I can squat heavy again, I may make the push to 285.

My goals are 315-405-505-600 this year on press-bench-squat-deadlift. Wish this knee would get better faster—time’s a wastin.

  16. no PR’s per se… I did have to move my steering wheel up in my car. I realized finally on Tuesday that my leg won’t fit underneath it any more :)

  17. No PRs this week.
Need some advice though…I suck at pull ups. I’d like to blame it on being 6’5″ 240 but I know other guys my size who can do them fine. Anybody have tips/suggestions for improvement?

  18. PRs for the week:

    BW a jiggly 247ish
Bench, hit 275 and 285 for singles with a pause.
Haven’t squatted or pulled in about 2 weeks, thanks to work sucking the life out of me and a neverending list of honey-dos from my wife at home.

Copy of Practical Programming came in yesterday and my Rogue Do-Wins should be in early next week.

Family vacation til May 23. Not looking good the PL meet on July 10th, but maybe I will manage some decent progress in about the 7 weeks prior. FML.

  19. Hope it’s not too late to post my results from the TSC!

    Deadlift: 465 (PR)
    Strict pullups: 20 (PR)
    24kg KB snatches: 76

Good end to a good week.

  20. @Vamshi

i find imagining like you’re going to sit down in a chair helps get you bending at the hips. Good luck, mate.

    @A.C.

One word. Awesome. This should be freakin’ sweet as a nut. I will try to find some suitably 70’s examples (not that you’re not more than capable of doing this yourself).
Oh, just had a thought – every good show with a hero/good guy(70’s big crew) needs a diabolically fiendish uber-villain that while always foiled, can never quite be nailed in the standard 30 mins (icon of 90’s small – maybe robert pattinson?). He would of course have numerous nameless minions standing ready to do his bidding at the street level(eg. guys doing curls in the power rack, Justin’s “get a tan” nemesis, etc.)
    Sorry if i’m getting a bit excited…

    PR
    BW 77kg @ 6′
This is up from 70ish a few weeks ago. Unfortunately my progress is a bit slower than it could be due to the fact i can only lift 1-2 times a week at the moment (on consecutive days). Trying not to put too much weight on too quick while can’t train a lot : (
