Greetings and Contest Announcements

‘Tis PR Friday lads and lasses, and that means you get to post your personal records in lifting, clothing ripped, eating, and bodyweight increases. I just saw someone ferociously rip their shorts when they were squatting yesterday. It brought a tear to my eye.

Oh, and the 70’s Big Twitter page was just launched. We’ll try to make it funny.

Greetings!
We’ve been shipping out the t-shirt orders and there have been a bunch of orders from around the world; Ireland, the UK, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, and Australia all contain people who are on the quest to 70’s Big. I’d like to personally extend a greeting to all of the international readers and welcome you all to post in the comments this weekend to drop us a line. I’ve never been out of the U.S., so this is particularly fascinating to be reaching anybody across the world.

The Mustaches of May Contest
Starting in May 70’s Big will have a picture contest centered around a particular theme every month. Whoever has the best picture in May will win a 70’s Big t-shirt. The theme of May’s contest is mustaches, so the submitter must include a picture of them wearing some kind of stellar ‘stache. This is open to both males and females, but females are strongly encouraged to not grow a mustache for this event. The mustache doesn’t have to be real, but you’d have to think of something pretty damn clever to win on a fake ‘stache.

Some rules off the top of my head include:
– No male nudity. Ever.
– Female nudity won’t be posted on the site.
– Don’t send me something that is going to piss people off (racial or violent stuff), and if you are doing something religious, it shouldn’t mock the religion but pay homage to it.

Ultimately, just use good sense. Don’t ruin this for everyone else.

From last weekend's meet (L to R): Brent, Mike, Kilgore, Justin, and Chris

...and seconds later

  1. Food:
4 BK Quad Stackers + Large Chocolate Shake

Will hopefully have lifting PR’s at SHU Open this Sunday

Justin, my heats are later in the day. How would you eat throughout the day before a meet? I’m at 219 so I’m not at all worried about breaking the 105kg barrier. Thank you in advance

I would eat like a normal day, but not a bunch of stuff that won’t digest well. And make sure you poop before warming up so it isn’t a problem.

  2. Started hitting PRs this week on Bill Starr’s 5×5 linear progression program, that I’m using while cutting body fat to more appropriate levels after my goal weight of 86kg about a 5-6 weeks ago (I’m 1.67, which is 5″6′ I believe).

    Squat 1×5 122.5kg
    BP 1×3 82.5kg
PC 1×2 67.5kg, would have had the 3rd rep if I had gone under the bar a little bit faster, but no matter.

  3. PR’s for the week:

    Bench: 187x3x5
    Squat: 275x3x5

    Food PR:

5 cheeseburgers eaten in two days.

Ok, I finally have a video of my deadlift. Changes made in the past couple sessions:

-mid foot is over the bar, shins about 1 1/2 inches away from bar.

-instead of gripping the bar mid-hand, i now grip it at the base of my fingers.

-instead of rolling the bar to my knees, i grip the bar then drop my hips till shins hit bar.

I’m still have difficulties. I feel like I’m not flexible enough or something. I try to sink my hips lower but it just feels wayy to uncomfortable and not natural. My lower back isn’t flat and it’s getting REALLY frustrating. I keep reading the deadlift section of SS and watching videos of people who pull properly. They make it look so easy.

    From SS, page 131:

“But it is the hip extensors-the glutes and the hamstrings acting as stabilizers during the initial phase of the pull, that maintain the back angle by exerting tension on the pelvis from the posterior, at the insertion points on the ischium and illium.”

Could this mean I have weak/tight/inflexible hamstrings, glutes and hip extensors?

WHY DO I SUCK AT PULLING?

  4. 5’9, 210

    Squat: 240x3x5
    Bench: 225x3x5
    Press: 135x3x5
    Deadlift: 275x1x3

Hoping to squat 300 before the end of the semester.

Food PR: Stacked 3 individual Sonic burgers together, buns and vegetables included, and ate it all, followed by 1 more burger, and a strawberry milkshake.

  5. 5’9, 165 lb
    39 years old
    Squat: 305x5x3 (PR)
    Bench: 230x5x3
Hoping to get to 315 on the squat — can’t wait for 3 big plates on each side…

  6. Brent looks like the coolest person on Earth.

No lifting PRs as i am starting training on Monday because im just reading through SS.

    Eating PRs:

Drink my first GOMAD today. Feels good man.

  7. In for the mustache challenge, since i get no sex, even though im in college, growing a beard shouldn’t be an issue. Just gotta give it some time.

This is why this website is a sausage fest.

  8. 6 ft, 205lbs..but that’s nothing new.
My shiny new belt arrived on tuesday, I celebrated by squatting 185kg’s and benching 120kg’s. Deads happen tomorrow, looking for 225.

  9. @A.C.

“My chances of having sex with the opposite gender will officially turn to zero during May.”

So you’re not ruling out the chances of any dude action, though? Interesting….lol

Ha I didn’t feel like it was necessary to mention that I don’t have sex with dudes.

    –A.C.

This is another reason why this website is a sausage fest.

  10. @ 70’s Big dudes with mustaches,
I’m being 100% honest here when I say don’t worry about getting chicks when you have a ‘stache. If anything, you stand out a bit more, it becomes a subject of conversation and it’s acts like a giant billboard over your head saying “I’m a F*ing man”. Rock your lip sweater with pride and confidence and beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano.

    Lip sweater…haha.

  11. Accepting Gant’s TSC…uhh..C:
    BW 228

DL 465×1 505×1 (Made an AC jump to 545 and failed just above the knees. Apparently, I have learned nothing from all these competition posts lately. Tied my previous training PR)

    Strict pullups 18

    24KG KB Snatch 101/5:00

  12. Ground out a 250 3×5 squat and a 145 3×5 press.

Also weighed in at 232 lbs at 6’2″ and 48 yrs, up from 210 lbs and a wimpy 225 lb single max squat in January. I need to put another 10 lbs on the legs.

  13. Did not complete the TSC, in favour of training (I compete in rowing/there’s a raw meet coming up at my gym in june)
But as an update, I got my 225 for deads.

  14. When I grow the upper lip fur, my girl wont kiss me. On the other hand, I go to town on that cat no matter the forest that be sproutin.
