Eggs…blech

“Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?”

When I first moved to Wichita Falls, I weighed 195 pounds. I began the linear progression, and ate a lot of food. I ate six eggs every morning, beef quesadillas, a gallon of milk a day, and lots of other stuff. For two or three months I ate those six eggs. It started to get monotonous, so I started trying to put things on them to mask the taste. I tried at least five different kinds of salsa. All were good (I’m in Texas, after all), but each one would turn bland after the second bottle.

It wasn’t long before I started to loathe eggs. It became a struggle to wolf them down every morning. Soon, I hated them. Despised them. I couldn’t have them in my mouth because trying to swallow them nearly produced a gag reflex. That was the damndest thing ever; I had been eating at least three or four eggs every day for the past three years, and now they were suddenly becoming grotesque.

This has happened periodically with food throughout this year. It’s natural to start disliking something because it is repetitive and monotonous. In fact, my friends Chris and AC have both become jaded with eggs too. In my case, I had to start eating something else. For a while I just ate cheeseburger patties for breakfast (with barbecue sauce). I started eating eggs again a few months later, but always with bacon.

Weird set backs are going to happen when you are strength training. You might start hating food that you have always loved. Whatever. Just make a change and keep eating.

Randy and Josh are in Afghanistan doing the linear progression. This is what they do for fun.

Randy consumes raw meat because he is raw.

Josh refuses to get off the scale until it goes up. Randy didn’t have the heart to tell him he was already holding the bag.

Oh, and just so you guys know, my abs are still sore (on Sunday) from front squatting and rack pulls on Friday night. With my belt. Because it makes my abs go to sleep.

  1. I get pretty sick of eating chicken and eggs every day. I”ve been eating a plateful of eggs almost every morning for the past 4 years and I hate eggs.

But I recently realized something. Up until about 100 years ago, many humans would eat the exact same thing every single day, and they were fine.

Most people were farmers. If you were a chicken farmer, what the hell do you think you ate 95% of the time for dinner? You were probably poor so you
didn”t spice up your dinner more than once a week. You”d get the same good deal on green beans from your cousin and you”d have a big-ass 50-poundish sack of corn or something that your family would eat through until it was time to buy another big-ass sack of some sort of cereal.

I”m not saying that trying to spice up your food makes you a softy. But if you”re in a situation where you have to choose between eating a food you”re sick of in order to get big or doing something like skipping a meal or “just having a salad” for a change of pace, then your choice is clear.

  2. I would think more people knew how to cook properly back in the day, out of necessity. It”s not been long since restaurants were just conspicuous consumption for the wealthy, and ready meals and fast food just didn”t exist.

  3. @ Penn: I hope you also realize we are average 10 centimeters taller than 100 years ago nowadays? That”s 90% because of the diversity in our food.

  4. ain”t no thang, fellas. i too, hated eggs with a fiery passion that come from the bottom of my heart. that is, unless my momaw cooked them – everytime they were amazing.

so i followed her cue, bought a sweet cast iron skillet, cooked bacon first, then potatoes, then scrambled my eggs in the grease, and now eggs in the morning are a wondrous event to look forward to.

if you aren”t enjoying eating your eggs, you aren”t eating enough bacon with them.

  5. @ FLyingDutchman.

We are most certainly not taller because of improvements in the kinds of foods we eat. Look at the menu of what someone would eat in the year 1909. Now look at the menu of what someone would eat in the year 2009.

Don”t imagine what you, a health and performance conscious weightlifter is eating. Look at what an average joe is eating. He”s eating a LOT more crap present day. One of the best dietary guidelines (not rules) I ever heard was “try not to eat stuff your great grandmother wouldn”t have heard of.”

We are taller because there is more food so children do not go through development in a malnourished state. We are taller because our drinking water is cleaner and our bodies can expend energy growing instead of fighting off disease. We are taller because our knowledge of medicine has improved dramatically.

But my point is that the burden of eating the same foods day after day is not that large of a burden when you consider what nearly everyone had to endure for most of human history.

  6. Yeah, scrambled eggs have become a chore to get down. I hard-boiled all my eggs for this week. They were a little easier to stomach this morning, but I might just have to take a break from eggs for a while. The thing that is so great about eggs is that they are a great bang for the buck.

  7. I save all my bacon, sausage burger drippings in a coffee can and cook my eggs with a couple of tablespoons of the grease every morning. 6 eggs cracked all together fry them, dont touch them just fry them, sunny side up and slide them out…never get tired of it. Just like my 97 yo Grandmother did (cept not 6 eggs at once).

  8. Best thing for scrambled eggs:
A forkful, or two, of cottage cheese. I know that”s not Paleo, but it does add some extra protein as well. Makes the eggs light and fluffy and much more enjoyable with salt, pepper, texas pete, etc.

  9. It helps me to make sausage or bacon in the skillet, then fry the eggs in the left over grease. I have to make tacos or something with it, just the plain taste of eggs makes me sick.

I took a trip to WFAC this weekend to meet up with Justin and work on my lifts. I learned a lot and got to experience, in person, what I have been watching in videos. Well worth the drive from Dallas, thanks again Justin.

  10. Ive had the same breafast for about a year now. I always look forward to it.

    – 6 whole eggs,
    – Carton of egg whites or 10 egg whites.

Blend, chuck into a cast iron skillet. cook on stove top for 5 minutes then stick under the broiler for about 10. Creates a giant egg pancake.

I enjoy jam on mine, however i have tried maple syrup and that is also a good choice.

  11. well well well.. yet another food topic… this is another reason why this site absolutely needs a menu section… i mean we could have an entire chapter in a book about what to do with eggs.. Mmmm

  12. Bacon/sausage grease always makes eggs better (actually the more stuff you cook in a pan before the eggs, the better the eggs), but still it is the more the texture and consistency of scrambled eggs (not the taste) that is making them hard to eat. However, I am sure I will continue to find a way to stomach through them, or create new recipes that make them enjoyable again.

In my opinion bacon does not make scrambled eggs that much easier to eat. I end up eating all the bacon first and still having to force down the eggs.

  13. I have to take long breaks from eating eggs when they start tasting awful. One of my breakfast staples has been salmon with tahini (ground sesame seeds, 100cal/1tbs).

  14. Egg Enhancers:

    Tabasco
    Baked Beans
    Bacon Grease
    Leftover Steak
    Cream Cheese

Although I”m not fond of plain old eggs, 3 of my favorite meals include eggs.

    (1) The “Sundowner” Burger. A Chili Cheeseburger with some fried egg between the buns as well.

    (2) Basic Lox (salmon) and toasted bagels with plenty of cream cheese. Serve with a side of scrambled eggs, but put a few chunks of cream cheese in the eggs.

    (3) Bacon Loretta. Holy fuck these things are good but they”re not something you can eat every morning without becoming a fat fuck. Bacon & cheese on French bread with mayo, tomatoes, green peppers & onions. Throw some fried eggs in there. This may sound tame, but you have to actually go to the real Sarkis Cafe outside of Chicago to get the true experience and see what a real Bacon Loretta looks like before you attempt to make one.

I”m also a fan of pretty much any sort of breakfast sandwich. Livermush, Fried Egg, tomato slice, lettuce, and cheddar cheese inside an English Muffin. Pound down a few of those and you”ll feel right.

  15. I get tired of scrambled eggs really easily, but eggs sunny side up eggs are a delicacy. There”s nothing I love more then moppin up some warm yolk with a piece of bread. And then I get to turn whatevers left into a delicious sammich. I know some of you are scared of bread, but good whole wheat bread is loaded up with protein too. I challenge you egg haters to make yourself some eggs sunny side up and still hate eggs.

I know this has been brought up before, but I also think a recipe/70”s Big food archive would be sweet.

  16. A breakfast sandwich I like to make! Two pieces of whole wheat toast,2 slices of canadian bacon,3 eggs,3 slices of cheese! Fry the bacon in a pan, then cook the eggs over easy, lightly toast the bread and add butter or mayo! Throw it together with the cheese,it is good! Also if you like country fried steak try throwing a sunny side egg on top,it is awesome!

  17. @Uncle Buck and all the egg haters

    Thanks for bringing that up!

Cooking your eggs in bacon grease is absolutely necessary. You cant get sick of eggs if your cooking them in bacon grease. It”s scientifically impossible, trust me everyone I looked it up. Add some freshly crushed black pepper to your bacon while its cooking if you want even more flavor.

  18. Hey thanks for posting up our pic! We”re safely back in the US now after a few sketchy flights on a DC-10 government charter..

Josh and I are still gaining and working on the linear progression. We have milk now so we don”t have to resort to nasty shit like trail mix!

And I know what you mean about hating foods – i”m beginning to get SICK of eggs. Of course I eat those little bastards raw. They have the consistency of some snot you just hacked up and re-swallowed. YUMMY!

  19. I”m getting to the breaking point of eggs too. And I don”t think I”ve had chicken in quite some time, like once (from Old Chicago in the past few weeks. Luckily beef never loses it appeal.

One way I ate eggs for a long time (and this morning) was to make my oatmeal, add some brown sugar and peanut butter then 4-5 scrambled eggs. It looks better on the way out, but it tastes pretty good.

  20. One way to help facilitate this is to have extra bacon grease sitting around. My folks always kept a coffee cup of bacon grease in the fridge. They used it for everything… fried chicken? Bacon grease. Eggs? Bacon grease. Toast with butter? Forgettaboutit: Bacon grease.

  21. Here”s a good recipe for eggs (plus it is a time saver in the morning). I”m going to write it up based on how I make it, but it can be easily adjusted.

    – whisk 3 dozen eggs together
    – mix in raw ground beef or sausage
    – mix in 2 cups of grated cheese
    – Pour mixture into a casserole dish
    – Cover with bacon
    – Cover top with foil
    – Cook at 400 until eggs get firm (usually takes around an hour)
    – Remove foil, turn heat up to 450 and, cook until bacon is crispy

I cook this on Sunday and can eat it for breakfast and/or snacks all week.

The great thing is that it doesn”t have the texture of scrambles eggs. It”s actually been a while since I made this, but I think I”ll whip it up this coming Sunday.

  22. I would definitely get sick of eating eggs everyday if it weren”t for ketchup. Scrambled eggs w/ ketchup+ canadian bacon+ fruit+ peanut butter= my daily breakfast. Never gets old.

  23. Why not try a homemade Orange Bang. You can either use raw eggs from the shell (be careful with bacteria) or go to a health store that sells pasteurized eggs. Use 8-12 ounces of real orange juice and use 4-5 eggs. Put both items in your shaker and Bam, orange bang. No slim, you get your protein, calicum, vitamin C and you get yummy goodness.

  24. Fat is crucial with the eggs. The fridge door guards a BIG jar or lard and smaller jars of bacon grease and duck fat. I usually reserve half the bacon fat whenever I make it and make up the difference with butter or duck fat. I prefer my eggs with half an onion sauteed in the fat first, then the eggs and the bacon chopped up. Add cheese and salsa…what”s not to love?

My personal fave is bacon, onion, chicken livers, eggs.

Sadlly most mornings are a pint of milk, a cup of yogurt, and four scoops of protein powder.

  25. I hate eggs now, especially since I have to eat these horrid scrambled eggs at the campus cafeteria. My solution: just keep adding bacon, sausage, and salsa til you can stand it.

About those abs, Justin, my abs don”t feel sore at all. Instead, they feel like they don”t want to work anymore.

  26. Eggs are something that I”ve yet to tire of. They seem to go with just about anything. You can always throw a couple fried eggs on something (hamburgers, meatloaf, pizza, etc.) for a little extra fat and protein. My personal dietary guidelines lean towards a NHE pattern of eating, so I try no to eat this treat I”m about to mention too often.
Go find your local Hawaiian restaurant and order a moco loco. For those who don”t know, it”s a big bowl of rice with 2-3 beef patties, 2-3 fried eggs, and then smothered in brown gravy. I usually ask for an extra patty and egg. This meal is fantastic, and reminds me that gravy is something else that can be added to a lot of meals for more fat/calories/70s big growth.

  27. Also, I used a belt this morning for the first time today during my banded box squats and was amazed at how much of a difference it made. Very similar sense of improvement like when I got my first pair of lifting shoes. It”s going on the Christmas wishlist.

  28. Hey guys,

Im getting lower back pain after squatting. However, its not right after the workout. It sets in hours after the workout. Is this just my back adapting to squatting heavy? Finally, how does one fix doing a good morning out of the bottom of a squat? Ive watched the squat rx videos. Despite these issues, my numbers still seem to be increasing.

    Thanks.

  29. This sounds bizarre but putting some mayonaise in scrambled eggs adds a lot. A friend taught me that one back in college, his motto was that you have not been a real man until you weigh 300#, we played football together so 300# was normal fo us us.

Seriously try the mayo, fat guys cannot be too wrong when it comes to food.

  30. Aaron,
I find it odd that you do banded box squats and just today used a belt for the first time. Not a knock on you, I am just suprised by this. Usually people doing Westside style programs are PL”ers and use belts.
    But yeah, belts are awesome.

  31. kittenSmash,
Yeah I guess I didn”t really know what I was missing. Of the small contingent of people who I work out regularly with, only about half of them use one (at least that I am aware of). I”ve been exposed to the WS training methods for a while now, and only recently started taking it more seriously.

I never gave it a lot of consideration before, and this morning one of my coaches said “You”re going to use a belt.”

  32. Ah The Loco Moco….Reminds me of home! Throw some SPAM on the side, Bam, Fucking ono! Aloha Nui Loa! Try soaking your eggs in Dave”s insanity sauce. They”ll be different to say the least….and you”ll be awake for sure!
