PR Friday

“Does the CIA have you pushing too many pencils?”

I hope you all gained five pounds yesterday. This may be an abbreviated week for some of you, but it is still PR Friday nonetheless. At the very least you can detail your eating PR’s from yesterday.

Remember, these are the PR’s you set this week in lifting, eating, or gaining weight. If you’re a more advanced lifter, then you might just highlight your training week since PR’s will be less frequent.

As for me, I clean and jerked 150 twice on Tuesday (PR), squatted 460 for three sets of five on Wednesday, and failed on my last rep of pressing 210 for three sets of five (had never pressed this but will consider it a PR when completing all the sets). I weighed in at 226.5, which is the heaviest I have ever been — got a few more pounds to gain to get to the upper limit of my weight class. Oh, and yesterday I watched an abnormal amount of Battlestar Galactica.

I have been coaching a 14 year old kid named Colton for a couple of months. He walked in as a quiet, 122 pound boy who had a decent bench press (he was repping 135). 35 pounds later he is a pretty strong 157 pound pain in the ass who will talk smack to the majority of people in the gym (although probably not up to Greyskull standards).

Colton has squatted 235 for three sets of five, pressed 110x5x3, and benches 165x5x3. He will compete at the state meet in January with us, and will be close to hitting the qualifying total for national level competitions in his age and weight class.

In the following video, he pulls 285 for a set of five. He could probably stand to keep the low back locked in the first few reps, but the last few reps are typical of a heavy set of five. Nice work nonetheless.

  1. PR”s this week:

    Body weight: 216 lbs @ 5”10″
    Press: (3×5) 160
    Squat: (3×5) 335

But stalled for the second time @245 bench, and in the midst of second resets for all other lifts. Might be time for TM soon.

  2. Food PRs. Over the course of 4 days, I had two different thanksgivings, 2 holiday parties, and lots of leftovers. Despite doing 40 miles on the bike, I managed to gain 9 pounds.

  3. I suppose this is as good a time as any to post my numbers. I””ll try to borrow a video camera one of these days because I really would like to get some actual coaching tips.

    Vitals, 29/m/170

    Squat 315 5X3
    Bench 185 5X3
    Dead Lift 403.5 (183K) 5X3
Press 115 5X3 (need help here)
    Power Clean 195 3X5

OK, so a couple things back in May I was hit by a car while riding my bike which broke my right wrist and dislocated my right shoulder. My bench and press went way down once I was able to lift again. Since then, my bench has been going back up but my press refuses to budge. My 5 rep max is only 115 and even more bizarrely, my one rep max is only 117.5 any more and I just can””t get it of my shoulders. Once it””s up I can press through fine (push press max is around 200 for a single) but I just have no strength off my shoulders and if I push it I get lots of pain in my shoulder for the next couple days. Any thoughts? Also, I can””t figure out why my squat is so low compared to my dead lift. A couple months ago I switched to the low back which immediately got me up a few pounds. I””m getting more comfortable with the position but I still have issues with bar slip (I wear 100% cotton shirts). Because the bar always wants to roll down my back, I end up putting too much pressure on my arms which also really hurts my right shoulder. any ideas how to correct this? thanks guys!

    You’re all fucked up, Jesco.

I would have to see how you are pressing and squatting. I suspect there are form issues. Where do you live?

  4. Thanks a bunch for the quick reply Justin! I live in an unincorporated part of Yolo County in Northern California, the closest city to me is Davis. I”m pretty sure I have all kinds of form issues but I almost always work out by myself (I”ve built a pretty nice garage gym) so there”s no one with any real lifting knowledge that can watch me. I”m gonna try real hard to get a camera in there and maybe get some computer smarty pants guy to show me how to put it on the internet.

P.S. I”ve also gotta get some footage of a success story I had. I coach rugby and last year we had a really small kid with a ton of heart. His name”s Brendon and in May of 09” he weighed 120#
I got him to buy starting strength and put him on GOMAD which he adhered to religiously for almost three months this summer. By July he weighed 160# and had massive increases in strength. He”s the most dedicated kid I ever coached and I was proud to see him head off for college this fall on his way to becoming 70”s big!
