California Hangover

We got back late Monday night from doing a barbell seminar in Huntington Beach, CA. I would not advise anyone visiting or continuing to live in that state. To California residents: I’m sorry I’m not sorry. More on the trip tomorrow…

You may remember that on Friday, I mentioned that AC was going to compete in a USAPL meet. He did 70’s Big justice going 7 for 9, and I’m proud of him.

Competing in the 220 lb class…
Body weight: 204 (on their scale, he was around 208-209 on his scale)
Squat: 529 (raw state record)
Bench: 368 (raw state record
Deadlift: 568

Edit: AC went 7 of 9. I typed it wrong last night for some reason. I was in a hurry.

  1. I´m in complete agreement with Q…

Just a quick question for A.C.:
Why did wrap your thumbs around the bar in the second and third squat attempt? Was it because of the rules?

  2. wtf… wow nice job incredible i know what to strive for now.
man did you only get second place AC?
who was the first place guy?
you make everyone on here feel inadiquate.. my god sir.

those meatballs make me hangry. mmmm meatballs

  3. Y”all beat me to the Karate Kid references :( Nice lifting man!
Is locking out always the sticking point on your deads? You get the wieght halfway sooo easy!

  4. A.C. you are a monster. I can t believe you are only 204, you should eat more, try for the high side of your weight class.

And I have to agree with Justin on this one. I have been to California a few times, none of them pleasant.

  5. AC, great enthusiasm before and after each lift. It is great watching some of the other spectators and competitors faces. They”re all kind of like “oh *#%$!”

That was awesome to watch. Makes me want to compete.

  6. Sometimes I get a boner when looking at A.C.”s lifts- not necessarily AC because he”s an ugly bastard, but his lifts.

    Anyways PR Friday, I guess.

    Bench-215x5x3
    Squat-305x5x3
    Press 120x5x3
    Clean- 170x5x3 (super weak here).

  7. Dirk- Yeah a judge came up to me and said I have to wrap my thumbs, even though two other guys werent doing it. It was kinda bs.

Bflatsax- Yeah the guy that beat me squatted like 6 and benched 450, my deadlift was higher though.

Skinny99- I think at that point in the meet I was exhausted so sticking somewhere was bound to happen.

  8. AC nice work on the meatballs they look good, I am surprised you only weigh 204 with food like that.

Also nice work with the lifts and music selection. What is the actual name of that song so I can look it up online? I only know it as the the Karate kid song

  9. Congrats AC! All those lifts are stronger than mine, and I””ll be in the 275 class for my first USAPL meet! Doh. Luckily the state records here are lower. I””m more than a bit worried about the thumbs around the bar on squats now. I hadn””t seen that anywhere in the rules, and it will seriously throw me off. Guess I should practice it just in case.

Johnny Pain told me that this was not in the rules (USAPL uses IPF rules), and basically they were wrong. Look into it. Get a rule book.

  10. On another note the Iron Maiden shirt is F*&ing great! May I request your next video have some classic Maiden in it? If you could get Eddie to make an appearence as well I would be very grateful!

  11. How””d you get a new state record when the guy who came first lifted more than you?

It is because AC was lifting raw, and his records were set in that category. My understanding is that the 1st place winner was not raw (verifying this…).

  12. Raw means all you are using is a belt, right? No wraps, straps, suits, etc.?

Yes. I do not know all of the little nuances in different federations, though. I have heard that some allow knee wraps with the belt. I will get someone to elaborate.

  13. Very impressive. AC- just wondering, did you widen your squat stance for the meet, or use your normal training stance?

Justin- can you dub over the video to say “I’m just really nervous and excited to [dance]?”
