Q&A – 38

PR Friday

Hello friends. Some of you may be new, and you’re welcome here. Post your weekly PR’s or training updates to the comments. If you have a training log, link to it.

This is relevant.

Weekly Challenge

Last week’s challenge was to do a set of continuous push-ups (no stop, no rest) until failure, rest 20 seconds, and then do another continuous set to failure. Record your reps in the comments.

Next Week’s Challenge: After each training session, do side plank holds (on the elbow) for 30 seconds, three sets on each side. If you have a wonky lower back issue, then note how you feel the next day.

Week In Review

On Monday we raised Ali McWeeny about $4,000, no big deal. But seriously, we had a review of her story and how she sets an example for not giving up, and then we helped donate a bit of money for her to get a prosthetic that will let her increase her activity significantly. Tuesday consisted of some clarification of some misused terms; I didn’t have to try hard to offend people. On Wednesday I provided a video to help folks find their psoas so they could give it a nice little stroke (yeah buddy). Thursday I did an AMA on /r/weightroom (on reddit).

You can find the “Ask Me Anything” here, and it will act as this week’s Q&A. I spent 5 hours answering questions, so it’s worth a read.

Other Stuff

Here is a quick 2 minute hip opener that all of you should find easily accessible prior to training. Make it a point to do it, especially if you’re one of these “I sit down for over four hours a day” people.

I’ve been thinking about bringing the weekly chat room back. Thoughts?

Don’t forget the fantasy football stuff. We have some spots open for the main league and need league managers for the regional leagues.

  1. I’ll admit that I completely forgot about the pushups. Whoops!

Deadlift 3RM PR at 100kg/220lb (squeezed out another 2 reps afterwards but they were dodgy)
    Press 5RM at 31kg/68lb

I need to work on my overhead and upper body lifts. Changing from a CF gym to a powerlifting gym in the next few weeks which I am stupidly excited about!!

  2. Didn’t even realize there was a PR friday post. I have nothing new, although I’m finally back into 300+ on squats since hurting my back a few weeks ago.

I didn’t quite do pushups at the end of a training session, but I did play the pushup game with a deck of cards with a buddy. Take turns drawing a card, do that many pushups until the deck is complete, J = 11, Q = 12, K = 13, ace and jokers are 20. Did 200 pushups in a little over 10 minutes. That was last sunday and I was sore until thursday.

  3. No real PR’s to speak of for the first time in a long time – I was just ‘off’ for some reason. Only managed a squat 3RM PR at 355lbs and totally bombed on the OHP and DL. I couldn’t even break 405 OR 385lbs from the floor, so I just shouted, “Can’t do it! Fuckin’ thing SUCKS!!” and stormed out of the globo-gym amidst the incredulous stares from the captains of upperbody and the cardio bunnies.

Did have a kayaking PR of 15 miles and 40-foot rope swing PR with a backflip on Saturday, as well as a massive sunburn PR – Definitely going to deload this week since I can scarcely stand the weight of a polo shirt on my shoulders, let alone a bar with 300lbs on it, heh.

  4. Awesomeness PR – My 70’sBig tee came in the mail. I’m back to bigger numbers since I hurt my back in Feb/Mar so hopefully I’m representing.

  5. Squat PR: 255# x 1.
    Deadlift PR: 335# x 2.
Fun PR: Ran a local mud run.

Even more important, my CrossFit box has started a strength program, so I’ll be starting a legitimate beginner’s linear progression soon.
