It’s Friday again, folks!
PR Friday is a forum to allow you to share your triumphs and failures with your strength training brethren. How has your training been this week? What questions do you have for your peers? Talk and mingle.
Check out Derek Kendall pause squat 755 unbelted! What’s your lifetime squat PR?
Best Squat to date: during most recent training cycle 475×3 raw w/belt @215 pounds, in competition 505 raw w/belt @ 208 pounds.
This week went fairly well; popped my right distal hamstrings last Friday – managed some mediocre triples this week around 405.
Posterior Tibial Tendon has heeled nicely and I’ve adapted to my orthotics – time to gradually add running back in.
Diving deeper into book 2 of the Texas Method – watching Chris, Mike, AC and Justin train is bucket loads of motivation. I’ll be gradually filling out from 205 to 220 to hopefully post a mid 1500 total by the end of 2015. No Nonsense training.
Lifetime squat PR: 585 lb (low bar). Chasing 600 lb, but may ditch low bar in favor of high bar (currently 575 lb), mainly because I end up with elbow pain and sometimes shoulder pain for LB squatting.
Notable PRs this week:
High Bar Squat: 475 lb x 8 (+20 lb 8RM)

Overhead Press: 300 lb x 1 (1RM)
Awesome lifts, man. I just failed a 205lb press attempt; 300 is crazy.
So, I wrote down the goal of competing in some sort of “novice” strongman comp this year and ended up enrolled in one last Sunday. It was amazing.
However, my definition of novice is vastly different to a strongman’s definition of “novice”. Turning up and seeing a bunch of Silverbacks warming up sure triggered the post coffee IBS.
Anyway, I guess i hit a bunch of PR’s in the events:
Log Press – 70kg (terrible, need to step this up)
Farmers Hold – 220 kg 37sec
Deadlift – 250kg
Front Hold 18kg – 34 sec
Max Rep Stones in 60 sec – 105kgs x 5
Already gone full yolo and signed up for the next one and one in June. However, at the next one they have a 100kg Viking Press max reps – i either get jacked shoulders in 5 weeks or im out the game playa.
K. PEACE.
hah, I literally LOL’ed. literally. I had the same thoughts after watching a local strong man competition.
my PR this week: deadlift 300 lb x5.
lifetime squat PR? 240 lb x4.
Only PR this week is bench 265lbs x 4 reps. Widening my squat stance has been a little frustrating in that I feel like I can’t find a groove. I’m thinking I may have widened it too much too soon. Light weight is feeling kinda heavy. I may need to bring it in a little for a while. I’m just trying to avoid my knees breaking way past my toes as I have really long femurs.
Weight gain PR: Up to 169ish pounds from 162 about two months ago. I also ripped my first pair of jeans this past week. Right in the taint.
Best squat I’ve done was 365×2. Meh.
Question for the community:
Currently I conventional pull 580 with relative ease in competition whereas my low-bar squat is an ugly 505 with Valgus.
My stance width is the same for both, just inside or directly at hip width, slight toe flair.
At the higher levels usually the squat is stronger than the deadlift. Thoughts on that?
My last meet used a monolift with safety chains (not as good as uprights but it was the closest meet I could find). Problem was, I squat so low I hit the chains every time.
I may be answering my own question here but, I squat close-stance low-bar and nearly glutes on ankles. Is the general consensus that I need to practice parallel squatting ONLY and ditch the deep squatting?
