PR Friday means you post your training updates and PR’s to the comments. Don’t forget to Prepare for the Heat and Stop Flopping After A WOD.
Weekly Q&A gives you a chance to ask anyone from the 70’s Big Crew a question, and we’ll actively ignore you. Just kidding, we’ll answer. Next year. Here’s an example:
Jack on Facebook asks: Any reason most of the guys in the 70s big crew wear VS weightlifting shoes (higher heel than the average WL shoe)? I know Rip recommends 0.75″ but I have femurs on the longer side, bad ankles, and >0.75″ feels much better for me.
I reply: I haven’t seen Rip’s recent recommendations, but he used to recommend the .5″ heel (that was what his shoe was). In any case, some of us wear VS Athletics because that was one of the few types of weightlifting shoes around in 2008/2009, they give 70’s Big folk a discount, and we are cheap. I think AC just changed brands, so the only people I know of still wearing them are my wife and I.
Weekly Topic
This is video of a 5′ 100 pound girl completing the regional final Ninja Warrior course is one of the most impressive athletic feats I’ve seen in a while. Kudos to Spencer Hall of EDSBS for linking to the SB Nation article.
What are some other impressive athletic feats you’ve seen lately? Post to comments, Fan Page, or Twitter.
Any familiarity with the Isopure brand of whey protein? I’m in the market for whey that’s lactose free. Pretty bad intolerance to it, but I just wanna make sure I buy a quality brand.
Also, would you have any recommendations for mobbing a foot with a pinched nerve? It’s prevented me from squatting or pulling for about three weeks now. Not sure the best way to approach it. Cheers.
I remember seeing a post from you asking about gyms in the St.Pete/Tampa area. Have you made your way through yet? I’m a local and would love to train with you guys.
Back Squat 275 lbs 3×5, Shoulder Press 125 lbs 3×5.
Looking to outfit a home gym in the very near future to get out of the commercial gym environment. Any suggestions for companies to buy from for squat rack, barbell, plates?
Rogue or elitefts would be good places for equipment
Yeah, I was thinking of those, also Pendlay as an option, but wasn’t sure if there were some other possibilities I had yet to come across.
On an unrelated note, that is fantastic picture of a mustachioed lifter. And Justin’s push for acknowledgment reminds me of Thad in Blue Mountain State.
I used to have a Pendlay Elite squat stand. It is OK. 3″ hole spacing is really not great for safeties especially on bench press. I now have a Rogue R3 and it is amazing.
I’ve got this bar: http://www.amazon.com/Barbell-Weight-Lifting-2-Inch-Olympic/dp/B006R4EOXM/ref=sr_1_20?s=exercise-and-fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1406049399&sr=1-20&keywords=cap+barbell and it is pretty great for the price. I’d rather have a Texas Power Bar but not for another $100.
If you get cheap plates, weigh them. I got cheapo Standard Barbell black iron plates and the 25s and 45s are wildly off — the 25s are both 27lbs and the 45s are between 46-50lbs
Was wondering what is the best certification (or other route) to get for an aspiring personal trainer? I would love to be able to open my own gym sometime. I took an A&P class (as part of an associates degree never quite completed) about ten years ago but other than that i have no formal education in the subject. Just hoping to turn this crazy obsession into something that gets me out of my fantastically fulfilling warehouse job.
No recent PRs, but this week I squatted 185 kg (~ 408 lbs) x5, benched 138 kg (~ 304 lbs) x3 and deadlifted 220 kg (~ 485 lbs) x2. Current BW is about 98 kg (~ 216 lbs).
Well I am consistently snatching 103 and c&J 125, which is sweet. I squatted 162 for 5 the other day that was a PR then did my working sets on the following Monday without knee wraps at 140-145. So that was exciting. Then I obtained a stomach virus and lost about 10lbs and now working back up to my goal of a 5 reps at 166 for the squat and I am weighing in around 78-80.
Check out these “super muscled” vegan guys. LOL Womp womp. http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2014/07/21/332329709/for-these-vegans-masculinity-means-protecting-the-planet?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=npr&utm_term=nprnews&utm_content=20140721
Saw that and laughed my ass off/wanted to kill someone for making that a mainstream view of “ripped”
I hurt my back a while back by hyperextending the lumbar spine. The cues and tips from your article helped fix it, but the pain kept coming back until a 155lb squat was sufficient to hurt.
For whatever reason, I was able to deadlift 400lbs without pain a few days later. I did a few weeks of high volume deadlifting and now everything is wonderful. Food for thought.
OHP: 155lbs 5×3
After I posted a video on the SS forums, I found out that my squats are “too high” so I guess my PR of 325lbs doesn’t count. I’ll deload some and see work my way back up.
