Pan American Games

The 2011 Pan American Games are in full swing and 70’s Big has been covering some of the weightlifting sessions on the Facebook Fan Page. There’s usually some decent stuff going on at the fan page, but this is an instance where we were essentially posting results of the sessions as they were happening. If you can’t see Facebook, then you can always follow on Twitter too.

I didn’t know the exact times of the lifting because the Pan Am website makes it difficult to navigate to the next day’s scheduling. In any case, today is the last day of lifting, and the schedule is as follows:

– 1:00 PM – Men’s 105kg (featuring American Donnie Shankle)
– 3:00 PM – Women’s 75+ (featuring Americans Sarah Robles and Chioma Amaechi)
– 5:00 PM – Men’s 105+ (featuring American Pat Mendes)

Guadalajara is in the Central time zone, yet I think the’s times are in Eastern time. Be on the lookout for the sessions (if anyone can confirm the time zone, then let me know).

Two time Olympian Chad Vaughn finished with a 326kg total to take bronze in the 77kg class.

Yesterday Kendrick Farris had a decent day taking bronze in the 85kg category. There was some kind of issue either with the display of the meet clock on the back, or his coaches not keeping an eye on it. In any case, he had to run out for his third attempt snatch. Kendrick came out and missed the jerk on his opener at 190kg, then hit 191kg on the second attempt. It looks like he’s back to doing his hybrid split/squat hybrid jerk instead of the squat jerk. He came out for the third attempt when his name was on the monitor, and we saw the judge tell him the bar wasn’t ready and to go back in the warm-up room. It’s possible that another lifter’s coaches changed their weight at the last second to dick Kendrick over, but either way his coaching team should have had better situation awareness. There was less than ten seconds when he ran from the curtain and he ended up getting his hands on the bar with one second left, and only clean pulled a deadlift. Despite these goofs, he still made bronze.

Kendrick hits 191kg on his second attempt

Jon North and Jared Fleming competed in the 94kg class. They both missed their third snatch with both hitting 155 on the second attempt. Jon hit his opener at 178kg and Jared missed his opening clean on 180k. Jared attempted 180 again, had a better front squat, then the jerk drove him down, and he had to stabilize it for about five seconds for a good lift. Jon then flexed for the camera and shouted “Shankle” before his second attempt at 183. It was a hard front squat, and then I wrote this:
Hit jerk, hopped around like a frog. Then tried to shake the judges hand and was denied????

They both attempted 190 on their third attempt. I noted that Jared had a great clean and front squat, but the jerk was just too heavy today. Jon went after Jared and was talking to himself, saying “Klokov”, “Steiner”, and “Ali”. I wrote “real hard clean” and “jerk too heavy today”. Jon finished in 4th place overall and Jared in 5th place overall.
Here’s a video of 94kg lifters

70’s Big will be posting updates on the Facebook Fan Page and Twitter for today’s sessions and I’ll post a link in those two places for a live IRC chat as well.

Lastly, if you are someone who thinks that the sport of weightlifting needs to grow — or that you have BITCHED about it’s lack of growth or talked shit about the USAW, then this is the time to support it. I’ve already seen people bad mouth our lifters on my own Facebook page as if not competing well internationally is a reason to not support our lifters. I suppose these same people supported the fucking Taliban too. Nevertheless, share and watch the live feed, spread the pictures I’m posting on the Fan Page, share the results, and spread it around. If you have ever bitched about the sport’s lack of participation, then do something about it when events like this happen. Otherwise you’re a hypocrite and a pussy. Every CrossFitter should have at least a vague interest in this sport, and there’s no reason not to have a nice following for our lifters today. Good luck to them — let’s get some more medals.

  1. An ignorant question: My can’t/doesn’t Kendrick squat jerk? Dude presumably trains oly pretty much as a full time job. If it’s a mobility or motor pattern issue, why hasn’t he fixed it yet? I am assuming here that the squat jerk has won out as the consensus most efficient way to lift more weight.

Also, he appears to be one bent-arm-pulling mofo.

    nb4 flames. I know he’s a beast, I’m just curious.

Kendrick used to squat jerk, but would lose a lot of his jerks in the bottom, he’s also (debatable) too tall to efficiently use the squat jerk. He actually has been focusing on catching his jerks “power” instead of riding them down, as he has more control that way. He recently went back to his “kick jerk” style, which seems to be a mix of split & squat styles (feet a little split, but squat/power jerk style).

With regards to arm bend, sometimes it happens when contracting the lats to “bring the bar in”, its not active elbow flexion.

  2. An additional ignorant question:

Why does Klokov get so much media attention / love from other weightlifters when Aramnau (sp?) is the WR holder and gold medalist in pretty much everything?

Note that I don’t ever do any Olympic lifting and only really follow the American lifters.

The reason he gets more from me is because Aramnau is ugly as shit and not jacked. That and Klokov shows great emotion while Aramnau looks like he could take it or leave it.

70’s Big didn’t start because fat guys were strong, it started because jacked guys were strong, and I still admire that more than the alternative.

  3. Brent and I FB chatted while we watched the Pan Am Games stream yesterday. It was really special . . .

In other news – Do you wanna get JEHCKED?? I’ll bet you do!

I’m putting together a little 70’s Big Chicago lifting group to meet about once a month and alternate locations around the area. For those of us who train foreveralone.jpeg, it can be real nice to have some buddies around to help motivate us every once in a while. So far it is just those of us who attended the recent workshop – complete with Gordon-Fuck and Dingleberry (but don’t let THAT deter you)! ;)

I guess I can’t post my email address here, because I will get spammed by robots. Sooooo just look up “Ellee Carlson” on facebook and send me a message if you are interested in joining us.

This is great. If anyone — including you Ellee — have any ideas on how we can set up groups like this on the site, let me know. If you are interested in having a group in your area, then post it. I’ll probably start a page where there is contact info for each group.

  4. There are others who bent arm pull the clean. They aren’t arm pulling tho, but locking the arm in a bent position to better get the bar into the hips on the 2nd pull in the clean. Works for some.

Klokov gets attention because he’s a beast, and he’s effin’ jacked. People like watching people that are jacked. I think Justin wrote a post about it a while back…

  5. Really interesting to watch the pan ams. I had high hopes for the guys, especially Jon and Jared and they did pretty damn well. I have a couple of observations as I am sure most of you do.
    1. Kendric is jacked as f@ck! dude is a yam house to the max. He really crushes the cleans and it hurts my soul that he is unable to squat jerk or split jerk and instead has to do the splot and I think it really affects his total and his confidence (i.e. I dont think he is able to lock out as efficiently with it). side note: Chad is also jacked as hell and I really like his lifting.

2.Watching North get amped up for the clean and jerk is really interesting to me. Its cool to see a distinctly American flavor on the lifts and I wonder if there will be any sort of international backlash against his pump up tactics as it seems to fly directly against the Eastern tradition of calm and inner focus. I am not bashing on Jon at all but I always thought there was in a sense an unspoken rule as to why other competitors did not yell and scream the way he did (Klokov and Dolega yell, but they do it to themselves and not as much to the crowd as he did) or if the relative silence was simply a carryover from the Soviet days. Or perhaps I am over analyzing this and lifter’s behavior on the platform simply reflects their personality. I also wonder if his yelling and foot stomping serves to distract him at all (again I am not hating as he is one hell of an athlete) as he is clearly focused on the crowd at some point during his routine and his behavior is in stark contrast to the deep inner concentration exhibited by the other competitors. When watching my daily allotment of weightlifting videos, most notably Franjete and from reading a ton of Charniga’s translated stuff when work was slow, it seems that some of the more succesful lifters exist in a completely different world than the crowd and they are alone with the bar on the platform.

    3. General jackedness observations- North and Flemming were straight diesel as well, but I am going to have to give a shout out to my fellow Latin Americans (I am half Ecuadorean) for showing up to the party with Old man strength and boss ass haircuts.

    1. Agreed. Chad has huge quads too.

    2. I think that growing up in sport society that has a close association with the fans helps Jared and Jon want the crowd interaction (they both used their hands to get the crowd “up” like a football player would). Jared has a longer background in weightlifting than Jon, and Jon played football. Jared also has the culture of a young lifter (which we all relate with) — he has his ipod on to get pumped right before walking out (just like my friends) and wants the crowd to be a little rowdy. I’ve written before that I’ve felt that the rowdy pump up is more of a younger man’s kind of tactic while experienced guys will “act like they’ve been there before”. It’s just two different sides, and I agree that it’s a personality trait more than anything else. Obviously we see a lot of emotion out of Klokov, and he has been there before.

Jon’s stuff may be over the top (I missed his shadow boxing routine and the judge told him to settle down after his second snatch), but that’s his personality (and has been for a couple years). Either way I don’t think it’s something to get mad about — old fogies may not like it but it is what it is.

    3. That one haircut was fucking slick.

  6. @Maslow, bro I am down, the only thing is I currently train in a 8 by 10 shed with a platform and jerk blocks in my parents back yard and I don’t think they would want meat heads rolling over here. If anyone in this area has a good place to train with bumpers and shizz we should do it. I am in Arlington. I would also be willing to bring some of my stuff to another location if need be say on a saturday or something

  7. If more American lifters would make noise / have a personality like North. America might actually be interested in watching weightlifting.

I didnt get to watch him and jared snatch. But I was flipping out in my cubicle watching Jon’s first two cleans. I watched it on mute too. So i didnt even get to hear what he was yelling.

Also the judge leaving Jon hanging made me laugh.

As long as Jon doesnt start acting like a douche like James Moser used to do. I wont mind him slammin bars and yelling Shankle.

  8. Fuckfuckfuckfuck, I have an appointment and can’t watch Shankle. FUCK. I had a blast watching Jon and Jared yesterday. Jon’s a douche, but it’s hilariously awesome. It’ll be even better when he’s vying for a podium spot. Justin, did you see that link I posted on FB to the details of each event, attempts, records, etc?

As for local meetups, there’s at least 3 of us at Hyde Park in Austin. If anyone else wants to toss shit around, hit me up on FB.

  9. Kendrick wrote this on his wall:

Special Thanks to everyone that watched and sent messages supporting me, it really means a lot!

    God Bless

He’s being really cool about the whole situation and knows this will just give him more drive for World’s and for the Olympic Games. Go USA!

  10. Also one of the most impressive lifting I have seen didnt take place by an american at Pan Ams. it was Ian Wilson at the meet cal strength had recently. He will one day be in the conversation of olympic hopeful. His jerk is scary awesome.

  11. @DC/NOVA people

I’m in for whatever we can put together. Hard part will be to find a place where we can all train together since I assume none of us own our own gym. I’m in Arlington (Court House) area.

  12. Can someone translate what strongerthan$fheid&nd is saying? What the fuck is a yam house? I must be getting old.

NW people hit me up if anyone wants to drink beer and talk about sexual organs. I suppose we could lift and drag my sled too, but priorities first.

Lastly, I’m glad to see some bronze medals from our lifters, good work.

  13. yam house is a phrase derived from the term to “get yammed”- yammed is similar to yoked and in essence it entails having a large thick back and an imposing stature. I think all of our lifters are pretty damn big for their weight classes except that venezuelan was massive. Also that Ecuadorean guy kicked some ass and I will be interested to see what he puts up at worlds or in London when he is heavier and actually pushes himself. Those weights looked like a training day for him.
