Some Things Are Meant To Be Seen

There’s been plenty of discussion lately. Now let’s just view things. I promise you won’t be disappointed in this post.

Frank Frazetta was an American fantasy and science fiction artist who painted awesome pieces. Frazetta’s interpretation of Conan launched his career and subsequently changed how artists portrayed fantasy/sci-fi forever. Here is a good piece I found on Frazetta’s ability. Both Rippetoe and Kilgore are big fans of Frazetta, and I first saw my favorite piece of Frazetta’s hanging up in Rip’s house:

Sharpwriter is an American deviant artist that I just found recently (thanks to Justin’s*** link). When you look at his pictures, make sure and click them to increase the size because has incredible detail. He seems to enjoy combining different concepts into one image (like a cyborg viking) as well as doing his rendition of popular characters (like The Joker, Bepop, and Rocksteady). I more so want to point out these patriotic pieces:

Abe Lincoln on a grizzly bear. With an M16. And the fucking Emancipation Proclamation.

George Washington hunting zombies

There are some other presidential images here, including this one of FDR that made me laugh. You can view more of Sharpwriter’s images at his gallery; there are some really good ones, including this one titled “Welcome to Valhalla“.

Lastly, if you’ve ever been irritated with me, then should enjoy this video of Tom and I getting mauled by trained attack dogs.

Which picture is your favorite? I think Frazetta’s images are much more 70’s Big than Sharpwriter’s (I think Dr. Kilgore told me Frazetta studied anatomy so that he’d improve on his ability to paint musculature), but Sharpwriter’s detail is amazing. What other fantasy/sci-fi artists compare to these guys?

  1. I’m not sure if it would count, but Akira Yasuda and his team over at Capcom should be considered some 70s big character designers for inventing characters such as Zangief, Ryu, Guile, and Ken. Hell, just Capcom as a company for making Marvel vs. Capcom. I’m not sure who signed off on the idea “why don’t we put Mega Man in a game versus the Hulk,” but God bless that man.

  2. Those dogs look like they’re really enjoying themselves. (Who wouldn’t in their situation?)

The big one had a boner after attacking me the first time.

  3. Cool art.

In reply to yesterday; You being master of analogies, is like calling me the Master of the Brazillian bikini wax. My point was, it’s unproductive and there’s better shit to obsess and bitch about.

I’m doing pretty awful with all this sunshine in Newport Beach. My skin is no longer translucent and there’s disgusting drunk chicks in bikinis everywhere. But beyond that lame SoCal shit, training is going good. I’ve dealt with injuries and life and am steadily making progress.

I had to ditch the low bar squat about four months ago though, I just couldn’t figure out how to not gm it. That mole on right arm came off like 3 weeks ago, I pulled a hair out of it with tweezers and the thing fell off like 3 days later.

This was a good recap. And yesterday’s post was interesting, and I need interesting when I’ve had something like 500 posts, BRO.

  4. Frazetta wins 70s bigness for sure. I imagine that he used a van as his canvas in half of his pieces. Who wouldn’t want to drive a Chevy panel van with a Frazetta Conan emblazoned on the side? No one who calls themselves a Man, that’s for sure.

  5. Frazetta always seemed to be the be-all-end-all in fantasy art for me. Even though Vallejo’s work was on most, if not all of the Conan book covers I had, I always love Frazetta’s Conans the best. Amazing. Not that Vallejo didn’t do epic work himself…

Anyone ever read the Krull book? Love the title of one of the stories: “By this axe I rule.” Great stuff after you finished all the Conan books.

The Sharpwriter stuff is a trip! What a freak– LOVE IT!

  6. You’ve been to Rip’s house? Is it true that he has Greg Glassman’s hand in a jar?

I’m sorry, but the Frazetta pictures can’t compete with the presidential one. I especially love Theodore Roosevelt battling Bigfoot.

  7. I just watched “Fire and Ice” an animated feature that Frazetta had a hand in. It was kind of “meh” but I am a big frazetta fan regardless.
