Pole Dancing

I met some pole dancers in Australia and they were both muscular and toned despite not lifting (I know Johnston is proud). I’ve mentioned before that most women can garner a healthy physique by eating a non-vegetarian diet with plenty of meat (insinuating the animal kind here, boys). Such is the case with the pole dancers I met; by doing plenty of pulling movements their backs and bodies were developed and toned. Not only is this true, it’s just an excuse for you guys to watch pole dancing. You’re welcome.

I didn’t want to spend time looking for a vid, so here’s footage of the 2011 Australian Pole Dancing Championship. Uh, if you work in a church, you probably don’t want to open this right now.

Regardless of your opinion on pole dancers or strippers, the pole work is impressive. It’s a non-boring version of gymnastics.

Here are some other videos from Australia. This one is footage from the nature park.

This one is me making fun of Tom because he can’t scramble eggs.

In this one from Shire Speed and Strength, Tom squats 150kg for a triple, I snatch 120 and 130 (I missed 130 at first, I thought it was 125 because I’m an idiot), and there’s some vid of Blake (who is playing football at Hawaii now) jerking 160).

  1. You say all time Snatch PR in that vid?

I already got your book, but I’d be interested to see a write up on your training history with the Olympic Lifts. You trained them once a week for a while, if I’m not mistaken, while doing the texas method. Then you take a year off from doing them and pull a PR soon after starting back up even though you’re traveling a lot. And your form looks awesome to me for someone who started doing the full lifts in his 20s.

    How?

I’ll answer this more in full tonight, but it wasn’t an all-time PR. I was in the middle of a rant. My best was 132.5 in training and 130 in competition.

  2. Does this count as a 70’s Big Female Monday post? I think it does.

I loled at Blake kicking the bar.

When will the rib eating contest winners be announced?

I’ll do it tomorrow or the day after — been traveling and shit.

  3. Hey everyone, this happened over the weekend! I only have my second attempts on video but I went 330 squat, 286 bench and 440 deadlift. Check it out…
    This is a 319 squat

    243 benchhttp://youtu.be/pTfIoeXET5o
    and a 424 deadlift

I learned that I should have made bigger jumps with my attempts after nailing the openers. Oh well, next time. I took third place with a bodyweight of 185 in the 198 class. If the hyperlinks don’t work, just cut an paste into the browser. Cheers.

  4. Terrible,
I have a two part answer to that question. First, I did not go hard enough in my attempts on the squat. 330 (my best that day and ever) was really easy. It was my first meet and I don’t have a lot of expierence with 1RM stuff so it was a bit of a guessing game. Once I got to the bench I was a bit better at guessing what my body could handle after my openers. Second, I am an ok presser and a bad squatter but it’s getting better.

Being conservative and hitting PR’s in the first meet is what you should be doing, so don’t second guess that. Well done.

  5. I hurt a muscle in my back on Friday. I just walked out 190, which isn’t even close to my max. Would mobbing help with this?

I would assume there’s a rib issue. Mobbing would probably help, and a professional adjustment to the rib would as well if it’s still an issue.

  6. What if the pole dancing championships were held in conjunction with or as part of the halftime entertainment for the crossfit games?

Good lifting vids, olympic lifts impress me (mostly cause I suck at them).

Got a question for the military or firefighting communities. What type of programming are you all finding most beneficial? Any major difference in results from crossfit football vs greyskull lp?

Are any of the mil or ff guys incorporating the olympic lifts at all?

  7. i still don’t know what to think of pole dancing. it’s pretty neat that it makes girls super strong up top…but at the same time it seems like just another way for an approval seeking lady to be exploited by dudes. i dunno.

i fucking lol lol lol’d at the bear that looked a hell of a lot like mr. kesuke miyagi from the 1984 karate kid.

@vale—hun, it’s ok that you can’t scramble eggs properly yet. it took me a few tries back in the day (grade school?) before i got it down. also, if what you call bacon is what we call ham….do you have an equivalent to american bacon that you call something else? i mean, do you have cured strips of fatty pork belly? oh yeah, i liked your squat, too.

That grade school comment was such a subtle insult, I lol’d.

  8. this has absolutely nothing to do with any of the videos you posted above, but how are the VS weightlifting shoes for low-bar squats, if you don’t mind me asking? from what i’ve heard the heel on them is larger than most weightlifting shoes, being .9″ or so.
I apologize if you’ve answered/mentioned this already before.

If you find/make a chart of varying heel heights, that would be good to have. The shoes are fine for squatting. Deadlifting will be more dependent on the person, although on average the VS’s may be a bit too much heel for deadlifting. I high bar squat, low bar squat, press, snatch, and cj in them just fine, although I don’t deadlift in them.

  9. @RD- I’m doing the greyskull lp now with the Olympic lifts and conditioning. We work a 24 on/ 48 off schedule at the fd I work for. I like to use my day at the station as a “rest day” . My first day off I do oly lifts and a conditioning workout under 10 minutes. Second day I follow the lp now.

It’s not the best setup cause I’m usually run down after my day at work but stick with this setup cause we don’t have good equipment at the station.
As far as conditioning goes 10 minutes or less is what I feel as most pracical to what we do. And training the oly lifts are just fun and can’t hurt for kicking in doors, lifting fat patients and whatever situation that calls for power.

  10. Looks like you had a great time, Justin. Was good to have you.

In other news, can anyone offer any other good websites/blogs for strength stuff? I’m running out of time-wasting material.

Actually, I just realized you weren’t calling this site time-wasting. I kinda thought you were saying this post was irrelevant and wasting your time.

This is why grammar is important, because the way you wrote it makes it seem like you thought today’s post wasted your time, in which case I told you to go fuck yourself. But when I read it again, I don’t think you meant that. I would understand if you didn’t mean this, because it’s hard enough to understand Australians in person.

  11. Actually, Justin, you read my grammar correctly to begin with, but my intention wasn’t to call this site irrelevant or a poor waste of time. This stuff is a good waste of my time. Relaxing. You know, good stuff.

  12. And I’m asking for more like this. By ‘other good websites for strength stuff’, I meant ‘additional good websites’, not ‘alternative’. Anyway, hope that clears it up… Keep up the awesome work!

  13. Was that MPD vid intended or did you just do a random search for pole dancing?? because you know you met about half those girls that were in that….. Jill (aka Cleo) is at 4min 18s..

Haha, I saw her. At first I just searched “Australian Pole Dancing” and then I was like, “My as well search for Bobbi’s” and found their channel. Then I just picked the highlights of last year’s thing. So, yeah, I guess it was intentional.

  14. Pole Dancing is a Sport… sometimes. By some definitions.
But, I will say this. My Snatch and my clean have become so much sharper since I have started taking Pole classes…

    Awesome is so many ways…

  15. Justin, are the shorts you’re wearing a specific brand? Are they rugby shorts?

They are standard Russel shorts. I hate the new flashy name brand shit that has big waist bands and go down to the knees. I haven’t found a place that sells these other than Academy. I’ll let you know when I find them, because I need some new ones (the crotch is getting frayed).
