Also, look at this guy.

Mustache + Shades + Hair = Desire

Even though I’m disappointed in his legs, he’s daggy as fuck. A waist-up idol.

In other news the weekly chat was last night in the form of a video cast. This new method allows me to easier answer questions, but more importantly I can show a portion of my screen — primarily lifting videos of YOU. The whole chat watches it together on the stream and I give corrections, points of emphasis, talk about related concepts, or just watch in entertainment. If you want form checks, then attend the cast early next week. Details are on the Facebook Fan Page and Twitter (you can see the updates to both in the twitter update in the left side bar of this page).

  1. is that ravishing rick rude? or maybe an excellent impostor…

My brother said it was him and that he’s seen interviews where other wrestlers talk about how badass he is.

  2. “All you high flyin Atlantic City sweathogs be quiet while I take my robe off and give all the ladies here tonight a nice long look at the sexiest man in the world…”
replace Atlantic City with any other city as needed.

  3. Totally un-related to the picture above:

I missed the chat last night, but I was hoping to get some advice.

Some Background: I have been lifting for about 2 years, but in the last few months I haven’t been consistant at all due to life in general being busy. I am getting back to lifting again more consistantly, and lifting 3×5 for about 75% of my previous 3×5 max on squats.

My Problem is this, I find that during both the decent and accent of my squat, when concentrating on keeping my knees out I feel my right foot rolling slightly outward. I do not have lifting shoes, but the problem is the same with both my regular shoes or socks.

My question is this, is this problem primarily a mobility issue, or should I just get shoes? I do not currently do any mob work, just a few deep squat stretches before lifting. What stretches would be most beneficial for this issue?

This is a mobility issue that is exacerbated from not having shoes. Get shoes. Do stretches.

  4. gregor, try to think about also spreading out your footprint. I.e, like you’re standing on a towel and trying to spread it apart. does that make sense?

  5. Gregor, are your feet angled or parellel with each other? It might help to angle your feet more so when you push your knees out they are going to put your femur in a straight line with your foot, where as if your feet are parellel with each other, forcing your knees out will cause your feet to want to roll to the outside. does this make sense?

also, as for stretching beforehand, Rippetoe’s suggestion from SS works best for me…i do it before i squat every time. if you’re not familiar with SS, basically just do a bodyweight squat, clasp your hands together and put your elbows on the inside of your knees and push them outward. Kinda gets your brain warmed up and familiar with what your knees should be doing so you can focus on other things during the squat.

however if you’re already aware of all these things and this is a more severe flexibility issue, i would definitely try some mobility work.

  6. Rick Rude was killer. The Smooth Operator.
Used to hide his spindly-ass legs under long pants but had great long ‘fro and moustache to go with it.
Good early days warring with the Von Erichs in World Class and then to the WWF where he tangled with Jake the Snake in a pretty good feud.
    Overall a four star heel.
Could have been a five star if he ever stepped into a power rack. A waste of good juice.

  7. Thanks for the advice.

I do angle my feet out, as well as doing the stretch that is recommended in SS. I think it is a lack of mobility in my hip. I am going to take Justin’s advice too and pick up a set of shoes.

I am currently shopping online for a pair of lifting shoes while listening to the podcast, great stuff.

Something that isn’t emphasized enough is how the wider sole on the lifting shoe prevents this oscillation on the foot. The ankle shift through inversion/eversion without proper footwear, and this is not conducive to squatting.

  8. I feel like I have similar social issues to Brent. If I’m around at least one person I know really well I’m usually pretty comfortable, but if not I’m a shy total fucking loser. This is an improvement from the point in time about a year ago where I’d be horribly uncomfortable unless there were at least as many people in the room that I know well as people I don’t.

Also, I feel that despite his semi-90’s smallness Daniel Craig should be certified as a badass.
