Some Vids

I don’t have anything impressive to say. We’ll do a chat room tonight; put what time you want it to be in the comments. It won’t start any later than 8 PM EST. Here are a few videos so far, and I’ll be editing a few more to get it over with as I edit some writing stuff.

Here’s a PR press I did on Sunday. Was only a 5 pound overall PR, but we were tired that day so I’ll take it rather than leave it.

This video is okay; nothing special really. The ending is kinda funny.

There will be a few more vids today.

  1. I was sitting here tired and grumpy and with a big fucking headache, and then Justin filmed himself lifting in a speedo. It’s a Christmas miracle for a Jewish girl. In July.

  2. I guess this as good of place as any to ask, are there any other 70’s Big readers from the Omaha area? The USA Weightlifting National Championship is this weekend in Council Bluffs, Iowa (where I live) and I’ll be there spectating. Come cheer on contributor Glenn Pendlay and the Cal Strength guys.

  3. “Link a video of Dolega doing it. I’d be surprised if he’s internally rotating.

    Here are the videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSxxajrTO5w >>> At around 21 second his elbows point back, as he stands up. Most of his snatches are like this.
I’d say he has some shifting halfway up, but this is a WR weight, so it won’t be perfect.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iNZ8O4G_4M >>> He catches his snatches with his elbows back
In this vid, his “elbows are back” since his way of catching is with an inclined torso and arms back (relatively speaking). However, I don’t see internal rotation here in that first snatch at all. Remember, internal rotation on an arm with an extended elbow overhead will have the medial aspect of the elbow (the pit, or crease when flexed) will be facing forward. His is facing up in this vid despite his arms being behind a “standard snatch position”.

    Here are a few pics:

This one really doesn’t look like it.

This one does. We don’t know if he made this lift or not.

Here’s a pic of his brother, doing something similar:

Left one looks goofy while the right looks okay — could be the angle but I see what you’re saying.

Like dolega, I tend to catch the bar with a lot of forward lean, and stand up with forward lean.
As a result, my elbows do the same thing as his does.

When there are more than a couple links, I have to approve it, that’s why it didn’t go up right away.

As far as the positioning, this isn’t so much an internally rotated shoulder, and it kinda looks like he does it on the account of poor mobility…maybe? Maybe Glenn has met the guy and can give his opinion.

And when I think internally rotated when catching a snatch, I think of the inside of the elbow facing more forward than all the pics (except the one I indicated).

  4. @Quintin
I’m in Omaha and I wish I could make it out. I had no idea they were in town. Are they running through Sunday? And why the hell did they pick Council Bluffs? Maybe they can trick the lifters into filling sandbags…

    @Justin
That kinda sucks that right after your 230 Press PR vid ends, YouTube refers me directly to Justin Harris man-handling 225 for reps. But congrats on the PR anyway. :)

  5. Question for the ladies: do any of you lift in Athleta skorts? My wife is considering a few pair for that purpose. Recommendations (yes, no, other options)?

I posted this question on the facebook fan page. Will report back with results.

update: def not the skorts. I didn’t realize you were asking about a skort. The male/female consensus is to wear short shorts or spandex shorts.

  6. I think I have read before that the elbows should point back and down, or sort of 45 degrees instead of straight down or straight back.

    fwiw…

You wouldn’t be able to snatch if they pointed straight back, but worrying about elbow position means that a lifter is thinking about way more shit than they need to. They’d be cued to externally rotate a couple times if needed and then not have to worry about it.

  7. MKingW yeah it’s Fri-Sun 9am to 7pm, I believe. I just found out about it myself and it’s kind of odd since there is no actual USAW club within 100 miles of here. They probably saw the success of the Olympic swim trials and thought they may do the same. Some advertising may help, on the afternoon news today there was a interview with a freaking dog handler from a dog show and not one mention of this.
