PR Friday

I’m gonna be hiking early in the morning, so here’s a video of Briskin’s PR Friday from a week ago. Before you ask, he has a little bit of chest dropping that causes a forward lean in his bottom position. We’ve already talked about it and we don’t need your help.

Here’s another a vid of us hitting some DB curls post workout. Brent’s not in the vid cause he already changed. Jake really wanted this video to happen, and I know he’d be heartbroken if it didn’t make an appearance. There’s still some more random vids, and they’ll be released periodically over the next few days (if that’s what you’re into).

Happy PR Friday
Post your PR’s and training updates to the comments. Feel free to start a discussion on whatever.

  1. NB: synchronized dumbbell curling was actually Justin or Brent’s idea first, I think, but I ended up becoming more pleased by it than either of them.

Also, Brent apparently makes a distinction between “big tits” and “fat tits” which he was trying to explain to Justin while I was there. I’m not sure if he succeeded or not.

  2. Also, Nate’s claim that I squat more than anyone in the room is obviously total BS, because Justin was standing right there, in frame.

  3. PR’S
    Squat 125kg 3×3
    Press 50kg 3×5
    Benching and Deadlifting tomorrow
Dumbbell Row (for the swole factor)48kg 3×8

Implemented Donny Shankles breakfast burrito (that he posted on his blog a while ago) every morning this week. Its been the best weeks training iv’e had and the best tasting breakfast iv’e consistently had.

  4. “Recent” PR’s:
    Squat 285 X 5
    Deadlift 345 X 5

I definitely drop my chest a little too much at the bottom of the squat. Is this a flexibility or back strength issue? Any suggestions on how to correct it? I’ve been working on it during volume days when the weight is a little lighter and it seems to be helping. At least it makes me more conscious of it when it happens.

It isn’t a flexibility issue with Briskin, and if you’re capable of doing it with no weight or light weight, it isn’t an issue for you.

  5. I pressed 225 yesterday and I’m pretty pumped about it. (All time PR)
I also squatted 355 for 3×5 which sucks for some but for myself is progress.
I also deadlifted 460 for 3 ez reps! PR

  6. Overhead PR – 160 x 5

    Deadlift PR – 370 x 3

    Bench PR – 260 x 5

Pretty good week, but felt a little weak from not eating enough mid week. Ramped up the calories and busted out some PRs. Meet in November here in GA. First competition.

  7. On week 2 of this 20-rep squat program. Doing these sets is giving me Ranger school flashbacks – that’s the last time I did something that sucked this much (and that was almost 20 years ago). Wednesday was 290×20, plus bench and deads and chins; the only PR was the 20 reps (I guess I’m doing a new 20RM every time I do the workout; tomorrow will be 295×20). My goal is to end the 8 week program at 350×20. Eating clean and downing a lot of good protein, so hopefully I will get there.

  8. Jaybles, I assume bedhead was referring to this:

Justin, what did you advise for fixing that chest drop in the bottom of the squat? I have the same problem but I can’t figure out what’s causing it.

    Chest into chin. Mid-foot.

Those are two cues that can eliminate it. It can be caused by going forward at the bottom, going forward on the way down, or merely dropping the chest. Mid-foot means the person thinks of the bar tracking up and down over the middle of their foot, and I go and squeeze their foot right where I’m talking about (the arch area right in front of the heel).

  9. Squat: 145
    C&J: 85

Sadly, numbers are in pounds but I’m a beginner. Oh! An ‘ex-bodybuilder’ who looks like Gene Simmons told me I needed to stop squatting to/just below parallel because it would make my ass spread out and ‘get really wide’. He said he’s an old guy and still has a tight ass. I didn’t check.

Welcome and good luck. I don’t know what that guy meant, but ignore him, especially if he was creepy.

  10. hit a C&J PR of 110kg and a comp total PR of 195kg at a meet last sunday. I was pretty unimpressed by these numbers (especially the missed snatches), but its progress which makes it more “take” than “leave” I guess.

Started daily squatting this week, liking it so far. Gradually ramping up to maximal daily, I’ve been hitting >90% for singles fairly easily with no belt or anything else. Will prob work-in the belt in the near future.

  11. Lifting this weekend at the texas firefighter olympics. this will be my first pl meet and am setting a goal of 1100 in the 198 class. I think this is doable for me.

  12. @smithb9
I have my mom in Arkansas send me Louisiana hot sauce, as there is nothing like it up here in the NE! The only super market I was able to locate it was Harris Teeters, but that is only because it is a predominantly southern store.

Shiner Bock is a wonderful brew, very tasty!

  13. I found out that the low life pieces of shit who broke into my storage unit while I was on the road and took everything I own of value managed to leave me my Rogue Oly shoes (which I thought were missing). This pleases me. Went out in my buddy’s garage gym and did some squats, a PR since it’s been so damn long.

  14. Squat: 260x5x3, not a PR (reset a couple weeks back)
    DL: 315×5 tied for PR
Bench: 225x5x3 all time PR (high school PR was 225 for a 1RM
    Press: 145x5x2 PR
    PC: 160x3x3 PR
Body weight 225, PR. Up 25 lbs since April 14.

  15. @amras3 thanks for the link.
@stonewallwells thanks for that link as well.

No PRs this week, still transitioning into TM. Cautionary tale: Don’t trifle with RDLs. They will fuck your world up. I did them on monday and my deadlift was shit on friday because of hamstring soreness.
    Whining PR.

  16. PR for having fun training with Rip.

Last night, I wore my CrossFit Salem: We Will Kill You pegasus shirt when we trained. Today, he said something to me that started off “Well, you’re already so fucked in the head…” that doing blah, blah, blah can’t hurt. Pretty sure that’s true.

  17. Oh, forgot.

PR for learning a new lift. Rip taught me how to split snatch. I for sure thought I would somehow die in a horrible snatch accident, but it was fine and kind of fun.

  18. FYI, I am sitting here on my back deck with Rip eating a ridiculously good steak and watching Brisket’s squats. We agree that they are totally solid squats and that anyone who says otherwise is an idiot. And since we rule the universe, that is all that matters.

They are good squats, but not perfect, and nobody is saying they weren’t solid.

  19. Synchronity: 6/10
    Aesthetic harmony: 4/10

DL’d 150kg 1×5, didn’t feel terrible which pleases me. Need to get the skin on my hands sorted out, I was only able to double overhand the first two reps, I switched to hook grip for the last three (thought I was going to experience some callous tearing action).

Early this morning I set an Obliviousness PR (it really was a PR). Hindsight, you bitch.

  20. Training has become pretty difficult as I’ve been tinkering with programming month to month to try and find what works. This weeks PRs include:

    Squat 510 1RM
    Bench 305×7
    Press 220×5,4,4
    Front Squat 370 3×3
    Jerk 320 1RM

No PRs in Snatch or Clean and Jerk yet. Maybe for Power or doubles, but nothing I really consider worthy.

Pretty good numbers. Depending on how much you’re changing the program, it’ll blunt your progress. What are you training for? Keep it up, brah.

    –Justin

  21. Squat: 390×5,5,4

Maybe I pussed out on the last set but I was lightheaded and any release in pressure wasnt helping so I racked it.

Life gets in the way too much so its been a bit since any other PRs.
