Monday is the day where we talk about 70’s Big Females. Here are some videos worth checking out.
Here’s a video of Cori snatching 75kg.
This next one is a simple clean with an easy power jerk at 85kg? This meet was from last November (Mid American Championships in Buffalo Grove, IL), but she broke her wrist shortly after the meet. Cori just started to snatch and jerk last week, and she maxed with a 72kg snatch and 85kg on the clean and jerk. There are plenty of guys who don’t lift more than that. Good luck with the continued rehab, Cori.
You may remember Lily from this video, but here’s an older video of her pulling 225 for a triple. She’s probably weighing 140 here?
Lastly, you have probably seen this video of Olympian Cara Heads (squatting 146kg/321.2 pounds for a set of ten). Here’s a video that shows that she’s in great shape despite lifting constituting the majority of her training careers. She’s pretty awesome.

I’m most impressed by the sound Cori makes at :09. Just amazing.
Second video is the same as the first one, Justin.
Sorry to hear about the wrist injury Cori, did it happen while lifting? Good luck with the rehab. Great pull Lily, keep it up. 70s big women are my favorite.
Cori told me about the vid. I fixed it.

Awesome lifts Cori! Im friends with Cara on Facebook, no big deal.
Lily, great hip drive on your deadlift, you are strong.
Thanks and great lifts, 70s Big females.
Justin, was totally sore after Friday’s awesome day at the gym. Tried all three stretches in the video + a regular old hamstring stretch for about 75 seconds apiece and now I feel great. CAVEAT: drink a large amount of water after doing heavy stretching like this, or you’ll probably be sore as hell. The same principle applies to massage therapy.
Well bombed out at my meet on the weekend.
Snatch went ok, got 108 on my first attempt, misssed 115 on my second but got it on my third, tied my previous PR. Wanted 118-120 but 115 was satisfactory.
C&J hit an easy 140 in my last warmup, 145kg on my first attempt my outisde finger got caught under the bar after the clean and while I was readjusting I blacked out and woke up in the loaders’ arms. I had 2 min to attempt 145 again, easy clean but apparently my elblows touched my thighs and I was red lighted. 3rd attempt, got the clean but was bit of a grinder, missed the jerk (pushed it in front and let out a long resounding ‘Nooooooooo!’ as the bar fell from overhead.
Thoughts – Im pretty sure the blackout had an effect on my final two attempts but reagrdless it is a weight I should have made, My prev. PR was 146kg so I was pretty aggressive with my opener but how my training had been going an dteh numbers I was consistantly hitting in the gym (145 hit on my first attempt probably 2/3 of the time after quite a bit of volume work) I thought 145 was in the bag. Well better to pay the price now in my third meet rather than later down the road at nationals or at a meet where I’m actually battling it for position.
Lesson learned don’t be an idiot with openers.
this being >> 70s << big an all, ya gotta dig up some videos of Cara lifting big weights when she had a 'fro
So I have two weeks of training before my meet. I’m not lifting heavy the week of the meet, and last monday I went too heavy (attempted 3×5 at 385 lbs, missed last two reps), so I was wondering what you guys think I should do this week.
Nice lifting Cori. Power jerks are way cooler than split jerks.
@hamburgerfan
I don’t lift at all the week before a meet. I just rest and recover.
I would do heavy singles this week sort of like a practice meet with a couple more attempts.
@Yosh I was already planning on doing some heavy singles this friday. I will be taking a light day this wednesday. Would there be any point for going for volume today, or should I just do heavy singles today?
Me gusta.
Hamburgerfan:
Just go heavy-ish singles, no more than three, then take the week of the meet off except for light activity and prep.
Great vids and great lifting, ladies. Just what I needed at the end of a crappy day. I have been frustrated to the point of tears with my lifting lately, and sometimes, I just need perspective. I know success doesn’t happen overnight, and these three women are proof that hard work pays off.
@stonkus
Sorry to hear you got pwned. ThunderThighs can relate from her last oly meet.
@stonkus—man, that blows. as long as you learned your lesson, i suppose. it’s a tough one to learn.
PS can’t wait to report my PRs this week. man, i am just on fire. solid programming and super good food. and i sleep twice as many hours as i used to (literally).
@hamburgerfan
I feel more sore doing more volume since I typically work in the 1-3 rep range so I’m not used to a lot of volume. I wouldn’t do a lot of volume two weeks from a meet but I don’t know your program or really anything about you. I’d keep doing what you are doing since you are 2 weeks out and any changes might throw you off. Just remember to take a week of rest before the meet so you are fresh.
Or take the Brent approach and just do whatever because you don’t care and then set state records which you also don’t care about.
I don’t really understand the theory of taking a lot of time off before a meet. I realize why taking it easy is beneficial, but many PR’s set in training happen during times of frequent heavy loading.
Perhaps its different between PL and Oly, but even so I would think pushing maximal weights would be sub-optimum if you hadn’t lifted at all during the week (with regards to being “warmed up”, not tight muscularly, etc).
I found that advice curious, especially since I’ve sorta helped Jake with a taper before. The volume would definitely be reduced for powerlifting, but I’d have someone work up to their last warm-up on Monday or Tuesday (in the week of the meet) and do a very light session on Thursday. Deadlifting wouldn’t happen within ten days of the meet.
For weightlifting, I’d have the last heavy day a week before, and some moderate weights on Monday of the meet. Then some light stuff a couple days out.
Similar concept to both, but what everyone has neglected to point out is that IT ALWAYS DEPENDS ON THE PERSON. If someone is more advanced, then they’ll have more of a taper.

Open Question:
On the tweaked for hypertrophy texas method, how does one use the hypertrophy day? Do I do 5×5 Monday, then 2×5 Wednesday and 3×10 (whatever) on Friday? Is monday used to drive continual strength gains, while wednesday is recovery and friday is swollertrophy? I am trying to get my head around this as it looks like I am about to transition soon. Too many stalls even after de-loads. Please someone let me know. Thanks ya’ll.
Some PRs for my sister-in-law who has been training with me for several months now. She started out air squatting, worked up to goblet squats with a dumbbell until finally an empty bar, last night she squatted 120lbs for a set of 5. Pressed 60 and Deadlifted 180 for singles, also PRs. (today was her heavy day going for 1+ reps)
@Justin
Maybe it wasn’t clear but the part where I said that I didn’t really know anything about hamburgerfan or his programming was me trying to say it depends on the person. I was assuming a power meet, and I feel that taking a week off is a good rule of thumb.
I gotcha. Especially in light of his seemingly “overworked” predicament it’s not a bad idea.
