  1. VERY sub-par day. Didn’t pan out the way I was hoping. First time competing in something weightlifting related.

    Bodyweight: 205lbs
    Division: Open
    Deadlift: 385
    Pull Ups: 10
    DB Snatch: 42

Wanted 405 on the DL for a 5lb pr. Fucked up my warm ups, went from 330×1 to 390×0, 0 instead of 365×1. After I failed twice I counted the plates and realized I goofed up. Dropped back to 365×1, 385×1 and it was a little sloppy, but I thought I had 20 more pounds in me. Tried 405 twice, wasn’t happening.

Pull ups – eh, not bad. My all time high is 13 at a BW of around 180.

Snatches were REALLY fun. First time ever doing db snatches, and anything lifting related for time.

I do have videos if anybody’s interested.

  2. I will point out that the deadlift is done meet style, as it says in the linked write-up. That means you can’t go down in weight, and you get three attempts.

  3. Yeah I know. The thing is, 365×1 was supposed to be a warm up. 385 was my first “attempt”. Then I moved up to 405, missed it twice, called it a day.

  4. Name: Luke
    Body Weight: 181lbs
    Division: Men’s Novice
    Max Deadlift: 337lbs
    # of pull-ups: 10
    # of KB snatches: 104 with a 35lbs DB

Gives me a total score of 76.86. Basically the same numbers as last time I did the TSC 6 months ago (73.53). GRR. Still, these are coming after only a week back in the gym. I had Dengue fever which put me on bed rest for a week and limited movement for two weeks after. Oh, and it robbed me of 4 kg of bodyweight.

    Stupid tropics…

  5. Well gave the TSC a crack today and I wasn’t too happy with my deadlift. Kinda went all out on my 1st attempt cuz I wanted 515 more than I wanted to strategize for the Challenge. Pulled 500 at our meet back in mid March and I tripled 515 on a rack pull a while back so I was hopin to pull it pretty easily since I wouldn’t be Squatting first. So I warmed up and loaded up 515 and gave it hell. It shot up like a rocket until it ran into some invisible pins at midthigh. Just couldn’t lock the damn thing out. So I scratched on the deadlift. Anyways…
    Bodyweight 235 lbs. Male, Open.
    Deadlift: 515 (fail)
    Pull Ups: 19
KB Snatch: 120 (with 1.5 pd)

Postives were that i added two pull ups to my score from last year, despite being heavier and having not been able to do many pull ups lately as I’ve been nursing a minor elbow thing, and I added 5 snatches to my score from last year too. All for naught though without a deadlift score. Anyways that’s that, sorry for whining.

  6. @Ryan
2 things if you want a score for the TSC:
We could pretend your last warmup set was your opener and use that as your DL Score for this. Which ThunderThighs likes.
OR you can try the TSC again before the deadline which is next Sunday (which is also legit, according to thunderthighs).
You’re obviously strong and 0 doesn’t do that justice.

  7. Deadlift: 507lbs
    Pull Ups: 20
    KB snatch: 100 (55lbs DB)

The snatches were way easier than I thought but I’d never even tried more than 8 reps per hand with those before and I can one-arm snatch 135 with a barbell. Cardio was the limiting factor on that.

  8. Division: Men’s open
    Age: 37
    BW: 261
    DL: 555
    PU: 7
    KB: 107 (2 pood)

After a blowout weekend I wasn’t expecting much but I did put on 5 lbs since last Thursday which might have helped in the DL! Numbers were where i expected them to be.
Thanks Justin and all for setting up the post. Great event!

  9. Name: Megan Thornell
    Body Weight: 153
    Division: Women’s Open
    Deadlift: 268
    Pull Ups: 4
    KB snatch: 89 (16kg KB)

20 lb. PR on my deadlift and got about 3 more pull ups than I was expecting.

  10. @CBOS
Men’s open uses a 24kg(1.5pd) KB did you use 2pd for the challenge or did you mean to report elite division (32kg KB, +10kg weighted pullups)?

If you did a hybrid I’ll just count you in Men’s open. 107 is real good for the 32kg kb.

  11. @Antigen, Sorry about that I have my Russian measures of weight mixed up.
    I used a 24kg KB/1.5 pood.
Believe me 1.5 was enough. I dropped my nuts on the floor in minute 4.
    Next year on the Elite!
Thank you again for putting the effort into this challenge for 70s Big. It was great. Sore this morning.

  12. BW: 195
    Division: Men’s Open
    DL: 385
    PU: 12
    KB: 100

That DL was not a max. Pulled 370×3 last week, just didn’t have it today. Antigen, thanks for setting this up.
    Brian

  13. BW: 90kg (lost four kilo’s overnight, wtf?!)

    DL:
    180kg
    190kg
    200kg/440lbs (10kg PR)

    PU: 18 (PR)

    25kg DB snatch: 76

Happy with the DL, bit annoyed with not hitting 20 pull ups, snatches are what they are, only done them a few times before as practice for this.

  14. Men’s Open

    BW: 264lbs

    DL:
    407.5
    430

    PU:
    4

    DB Snatch:
    55

Forgot I was doing this in substitute of my 5/3/1 Press/DL workout. So I did my 5’s wave of both Press and DL before attempting the TSC. Was about 30lbs off of my DL PR, and Pullups are not my forte.

Overall I’m happy with my results.

  15. First time poster.

    Name: Parker
    Bodyweight: 168lbs
    Division: Elite
    Deadlift: 375lbs
    Pull Ups (BW + 10Kg): 14
    Snatch (70lb DB): 8

I probably should have tried Open division given the DB Snatch numbers, but I followed the “compete in the hardest division possible” suggestion.

  16. Bodyweight: 225
    Division: Open
    Deadlift: 330 lbs
    Pull Ups: 13
    55lb DB Snatch: 55

DL went pretty badly. I definitely need a better strategy for picking attempts.

Cool challenge. Got plenty of room for improvement for next time.

  17. Kyle Kubler, Male Novice
    BW 195
    DL 325
    Pull Ups 4
    32lb KB Snatch: 120
I’m also posting for my friend who I did the comp with at my school gym. These are his results.
    David Eva, Male Novice
    BW 180
    DL 335
    Pull Ups 17
    32lb KB Snatch: 101
Since this was both or ours first competition and our numbers aren’t very good we thought it would be funny to dress up in weird costumes. I’m editing video right now, I’ll try and post the vids later this weekend.
this was tons of fun, really glad we decided to compete.

  18. Steffan Leu
    Men’s Open
    Bodyweight – 210lbs
    DL – 463
    Pull-ups – 7
    24 kg Kb Snatch – 119
Great fun, some of my training pals joined up as support. Had not maxed out in deadlift since Aug 2010 in a CF event where i did 330, so huge PR for me. First attempt was 419 second was 441. Had no real idea on how much i could lift, wanted 200kg/441lb and got it easy. Pull-ups is a bitch, can’t get it right and have not made any real progress in it for a long time. But all in all lots of fun. Just called the guy who runs the gym and asked for a licens application for powerlifting.

  19. Division: Mens Elite
    BW: 181
    DL: 475 (30lb pr)
PU: 24 (tied all-time TSC record)
KB SN: 52, these were absolutely terrible with the 32kg kb. First time using a KB and they’re quite a bit different to use. So everyone who used a DB will have an asterisk in the results.

  20. Antigen, is it generally considered to be easier using a dumbbell rather than an equivalent weight kettlebell?

Antigen will have more to say, but it’s “easier” to do the dumbbell, which is why a kettlebell should be used. Anybody snatching a DB has skewed numbers compared to people who actually used (and had access to) a KB. The KB requires an element of technique instead of just throwing it up there.

Coincidentally, there was a dude in the gym doing KB snatches. A guy I know (we talk regularly) wanted to go over and prove to himself he could do it. Yet when he put the KB over head, the bell smashed into his wrist and hurt. There’s technique involved in a KB snatch to prevent that, and to be efficient that isn’t inherent in using a DB.

    –Justin

  21. @daveh, I would say yes. I had one or two sessions with the KB before I did the TSC and it definitely helped after doing them with a dumbbell for the last six months. It’s a different movement with a KB vs. DB and it takes some effort to keep the KB under control.

  22. First post here. Have been lurking a while…

    Men’s Open:

    BW: 204lbs (92kg)
    DL: 533.5lbs (242.5kg)
    PUs: 21
    24kg KB test: 110

    DL is a 7.5kg PR.

Wanted to enter the elite devision but my gym does not have 32kg KBs. Didn’t want to use DBs instead.

My first taste of strength related competition. Play rugby for my university but never entered a meet or anything. Had a lot of fun. Thanks for putting this on!

  23. Name: Sarah Cook
    Division: Women’s
    BW: 153 lb
    DL: 240 lb
    PU: 5
    KB snatch (1 pood): 80

Deadlift was a full 10 lbs below PR but overall pretty satisfied. Also, the husband played along:

    Name: Alex Cook
    Division: Men’s Open
    DL: 350 lb
    PU: 13
    KB snatch (1.5 pood): 44

His left arm/elbow is kind of tweaked, and he’d never done KB snatches before today, so all but 1 of his reps were with his right arm. It’ll be fun to do this again in 6 months to measure progress.

  24. Name: Rachel
    Division: Women’s Open
    BW: 145
    DL: 220
    PU: 3
    16kg KB Snatch: 103

Super grumpy about the DL. My first “light pull” was the only one that came all the way up. Sucks. Don’t know what is going on there. Pullups went well. That made me happy. I paced the snatches, looking for more next time.
Hooray for my first TSC :)

  25. BW: 77.7kg
    Dv: Men’s Open
    DL: 150kg
    PU: 14
    24kgSn: 70

PS- Justin, are you aware there are Zumba ads on your site?

Ruckus, Google ads change depending on your browsing history. You tell me why it’s there.
