Things came up; quick post today. Hopefully your training went well this week. Let us know in the comments, and be sure to note your PR’s!
Additionally, here are some things we can discuss throughout the weekend:
Are you bothered by steroid use?
What’s your favorite meal you’ve had in March?
What’s the most 70’s Big book? Movie? Song?

Are you bothered by steroid use?
Only by people who are not interested in performance gains by using it.
What’s your favorite meal you’ve had in March?
I had a 35oz steak at Old Homestead with a nice glass of JW Blue Label. It was heaven.
What’s the most 70′s Big book? Movie? Song?
Song: – Accept – Balls to the Wall
PRs:
Squat: 360×5
Deadlift: 385×3
PowerClean: 145 5×3
Finished Week 6 of TM
I don’t care if people use drugs of any kind. It’s your body, do what you want with it. I’m bothered if people say they don’t use steroids and promise not to, then use them to gain an advantage to compete against others who’ve kept their promise. In other words I don’t like cheating, which is not the same thing as using steroids to achieve whatever other purpose a person might have.
It’s hard to pick just one of all those things but I’ll try.
The best meal I’ve had in March was this righteous chicken I made last weekend. Very similar to this, except I roasted the chicken whole and then used the drippings plus a stick of butter to make a balsamic sauce. http://www.bonappetit.com/recipes/2009/06/herbed_balsamic_chicken_with_blue_cheese I ate it with shallots/potatoes and asparagus. Followed by a huge piece of chocolate cake and ice cream.
Next month I plan to go to Fogo de Chao. That place is a dream come true: all you can eat Brazillian bbq. If you haven’t been, you need to deadlift heavy and then go. http://www.fogodechao.com/
Tough to pick one song. I suppose it should be from the 70s. How about “Touch Too Much” by AC/DC. I’ve set PRs listening to that. I’m tempted to pick some 70s era Iron Maiden too. My song of the day otherwise is “Roundabout” by Yes, the 1973 live version. Fucking incredible.
Book: “Strong Enough” by Rippetoe. Every page makes me want to grow big and strong and call out silly nonsense for what it is when I see it.
Movie: “Cool Hand Luke” The guy eats 50 eggs in an hour after beating down basically everyone in the jail. What else can be said?
Volume PR:
Squat
405x5x5
Best 70sBIG meal:
15 pounds of crawfish
Best 70sBIG song:
Kinda been rediscovering some classics, lately been obsessing over Black Sabbath, no one song, just the band as a whole.
Steroid use: I couldn’t care less, messed around with them myself about 7 years ago on my first deployment. I just think its funny when these little bitty beginners get on them, eat like a bird, and start some retarded advance bodybuilding routine at a BW of 135 pounds.
I’m bothered by steroid use in the sense that because of individuals, it is assumed by the general population that anyone big/strong is using them. I don’t see a need to use them unless you are being paid to be bigger or stronger than others, but there are bigger issues to worry about.
Song: When The Levee Breaks
Meet tomorrow, there will be plenty of PRs
Justin – your help is greatly needed!!
27 yrs old, 5.9 on Texas Method.
I pulled a muscle in my lower back mid January this year deadlifting 180 x 3 on the third rep.
I believe this is what you call the “final stroke” As I have now come to realise I have been deadlifting incorrectly despite the fact I have been reading the SS book. I have been deadlifting top down not from the bottom up using hip drive!! (I have learnt the hard way)
Two months down the line I have been maintaining my numbers on my other lifts waiting for my back to to get to full recovery.
I went to deadlift 150 for 5 today nothing to taxing, aiming to build it back up etc, I lost a bit of concentration and pulled the same muscle again.
What can I do for the best recovery?
What can I do to make my back more robust and stop this from happening again?
I want to enter my first competition ASAP!!
Cheers, Si
God of Thunder by KISS. Wanna listen? I got your back. http://listen.grooveshark.com/s/God+Of+Thunder/2opyXG?src=5
Deadlift 435 1RM
Um, I set my PRs to a live version of ‘Make Me Smile’ by Chicago, so…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzViV6PUOSM
Reset my squat this week, but did 15 reps at 145 lbs, which I guess is a PR. Also pressed 95 lbs x 1, another PR on my slow march to pressing triple digits. Then deadlifted 210 lbs x 10 yesterday and felt good doing it, but back was pretty tweaked afterward.
Too many sweet meals to count this month: we’ve been cooking up a ton of grassfed brisket, various pork products, and lamb burgers, all of which have been delicious.
PR on Press 130lb 5-5-5.
PR on Squat 300lb 3-3-3-3-3, I’ll get 5-5-5 in by next week. This time last year it was 235lbs 5-5-5 with poor form.
I’m with Maslow, use whatever drugs you want just don’t cheat.
I think Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, specifically O Fortuna is a great 70s big classical piece. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oqGtAsUiyo
Squatted 390#x3x5. I think I can keep this up through 405#x3x5 but then I am going to have to change something up, squatting twice a week, increasing each time is just getting too much for me. I’ll drop the volume down for 2-3 months and work on the deadlift for a while then get back at it with the squatting.
Masters nationals are a week from today. I got the go ahead from my PT to jerk on Wednesday. I power jerked to 103 lbs without pain, but I was totally traumatized. So, today, I decided that I needed to stop being a pussy. I snatched to 51 kg and then jerked to 57 kg. No pain. 108 total. I only need 102 next week to qualify for masters worlds. My neck feels fine, although I admit that after I jerked 45, I was ready to cry because it really does freak me out. So, I’m going to work on that, just like I am going to pray that my snatch starts looking like my clean.
On another positive note, I took a pic last night, and Wild Gorillaman challenged me to post it on the Tracy Anderson fan page. I thought it would be a good idea, since I look very much like a 152 lb weightlifter in the pic and NOT like an anorexic toothpick who lifts no more than 3 lb weights and purees her food. The comments that were posted on the pic give me hope that all women are not as fucking stupid as the ones who starve themselves to try to look like Tracy and Gwyneth. MAYBE some women THINK they want to be skinny and they don’t really understand what that means. Maybe not. But, I sure as fuck do not look skinny in the pic.
The pic is here: http://i.imgur.com/lFvMt.jpg
And the comments so far, are:
“You look great. I really like you hair cut/color as well.”
“OMG you have an amazing figure sister! Is TAM all you’ve been up to with workouts as it looks like you’ve got great muscles/definition!”
“Such a nice flat tummy!!”
“Amazing :)”
“A great body! Amazing!”
It is true that my hair looks awesome, though.
Justin, I’ve got a quick question regarding Starting Strength and the Texas Method, that being, which should I do?
I stopped with SS in the fall (wasn’t eating or sleeping enough), but now that I’m not commuting anymore I’ll have more time to recover. Should I go back to SS, or should I do TM?
Best lifts on SS were 140kg squat (3×5 across), 142.5kg (2×3 across, wasn’t able to do sets of 5 because of patellar tendonitis), and 150kg deadlift (all at roughly 90kg BW).
Thanks
PR’s since 6 months of not lifting and then surgery in December…
405 DL
315×4 squat
245 BP
Getting there, slowly.
Getting sick yesterday and today, so only Bench/Squat PRs. Kept Deads and press light this week, still did 435×3 on deads and 140×4 on press, though neither were really PRs.
Bench 230×1 PR (got two reps but my spotter went for it too early so I didn’t count it)
Sq
at PR 385×1, ten lb PR over previous one, and without a belt this time. Seriously pumped, 405 is within shooting distance!
I really couldn’t care less about who uses steroids. As long as you do the research and use them safely.
I just don’t think people who don’t want to use steroids should ever have to compete against those who do.
First meet tomorrow, can’t wait. Will post results later on and try my hand at a write-up next week perhaps
It would be interesting if various sports had a special steroid league in which everyone had to be on steroids. It could be fun to watch them freak out.
I’ve been on an experimental hamburger making program. 2 highlights:
-the burgoger, steeped in a Korean BBQ marinade and topped with kimchi
-spicy peanut butter turkey burgers, with peanut butter and spices and cock sauce mixed into the meat. Those were awesome. You have to keep the patties small on account of the PB diminishing the structural integrity of the burger.
@TBone. Wow. Hot. Strong. Did they move the Masters down to 25 years old? You look great. And I think I remember seeing that you like to drink whiskey. Bonus.
251 lbs. First week of 7th cycle of 5/3/1
Press 205×5
Bench 275×8
Squat 350×8 (first PR after reset for depth)
DL PR tmrw…
Working maxes are starting to get interesting.
Making some great gains on 5/3/1
Bothered by steroid use: No. Never tried them but have plenty of friends who did some who died (RIP) from abuse of steroids and other assorted drugs. Never saw the use of them as I didn’t play pro football or wrestle professionally. But to each their own.
Best meal in march: half dozen Island Creek oysters, 32oz bone-in ribeye, mushrooms, spinach (had this several times–could eat it 4x per week if someone made me)
70s Big Song: “Stranglehold” by Ted Nugent
70s Big Movie: The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh
70s Big Book: “Green Eggs and Ham” by Seuss. Sam I Am went to great lengths to ensure people were getting their proper protein intake.
Not bothered by steroid use, as long as the user is educated and understands the risks. And it’s not against the rules of said user’s chosen sport. Personally, I don’t have the inclination to try them myself.
Song: “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath
Movie: “The 13th Warrior”
Bodyweight PR at 194#
Squat PR 305# 5-5-6
DL PR 405#x1
Steroids: Better living through chemistry if done wisely I think. Why should I care what other people do to themselves. If it was legal it would probably make the whole deal safer for everyone.
Fav Meal: Made 5lbs of burger mix, then cooked it in the oven in a muffin tray. Result-much easier for snacking meat cakes. (ketchup icing of course baked on top)
Bothered by steroids? Nah. Just make sure you aspirate. Amirite?
Favorite Meal: I had _a_ 20 dollar beef rib at Black’s BBQ in Lockhart that was pretty impressive.
Book: Had to look up bestsellers of the decade…The Crystal Cave stuck out to me. Haven’t read it in awhile, but remember that being a great series. Maybe not super related to this site, but good shit anyway.
Song: I’m on a Sabbath kick lately. “Lord of this World” came on as I was writing this…I pretended like the iron was singing to me. Yup. That’ll do.
Movie: ROCKY. Duh.
20repsquats – nice progress man, haven’t heard from you in awhile! Tell the guys I said hey if you’re still at Eastside.
PR: had a decent-for-me-at-this-point bench workout this week. Have decided to cut to 198 for the July 16th USAPL meet in Spring, TX (16 weeks out). Yay.
Still recovering from aggravating back injury in November (pinched nerve in L5 region). Current progression PRs:
Squat: 290x5x3 getting back up slowly
Press: 172.5x5x3 ezpz
Dead: 295×5 (tried doing hook grip on last couple reps, felt good)
Clean: 110kg
I’m trying to drop a bit of gut and have been slowly getting into the mid 220 range. I was snowboarding for 4 days this weekend, went from 228 down to 223 – whoops. Been back on the meat + weights schedule since. Damn ski season always fucks with my lifting. Anybody else have that problem?
Forgot to mention the following:
Book: “The Hammer and the Cross” by Harry Harrison
Meal: after the USAPL Missouri State meet on Mar 12th, I ate at my favorite Mexican place and had a meal called “Too Big for One Plate”. It literally comes out on two big platters.
PRs – Squatted 350x3x2 and 350x2x2. Pressed 150×3 a few times
I’m not bothered by steroid use, as long as people who compete are kept separate from those who are clean. Not sure how that factors into Olympic weightlifting and America’s pathetic situation on the international scene.
Had some burgers with some 70s Big folks in early March. AWW YEAH.
70’s Big book – The Long Walk, by Slavomir Rawicz, written about his trek out of a Siberian labor camp during WWII down to India.
70’s Big movie – Rocky IV, by far. He trains out in the middle of Russia’s freezing winter with minimal implements. Ivan Drago later comments during their fight “he is like piece of iron.”
Song – Any song by Survivor or “No Easy Way Out” from the Rocky IV soundtrack.
Seriously, go watch the movie if you haven’t seen it. Make sure you’ve seen at least Rocky III though to understand the motivation for what Rocky does in IV.
anyone who has a problem with steroid use has a problem with me
something to think about
brb injecting 500mg nandrolone in vastus lateralis?? ooh KAY
PRs from last week:
Squat: 335 1×5
Deadlift: 335 1×5
I felt pretty reckless during this workout. Ironically, later that night I sprained my wrist in a drunken, idiotic mishap. Now as I’m rehabbing the injury, any thoughts on what I can do as far as lifting, Justin?
Couple PRs this week.
Deadlift 315×3. Not too much to brag about but it felt pretty great.
Don’t need a belt for my 34″ waist jeans anymore. Should be back into my 36″‘s anytime now.
Best meal this month = Homemade BBQ Pulled Pork. Me and 3 buddies demolished a 4.5lb pork shoulder in one sitting. That’s probably a PR, too.
Biggest PR? I got married last Saturday to the best lady I’ve ever met.
Doing Hatch Sqt program – PRd a BSQ of 425.
Earlier in the week did 440 x 5 DL from 4″ blocks. Using that to improve getting the weight off the floor.
Marty Gallagher is going to be in town next week. Going to try and get w/ him for some training.
70s big book – Keys to progress by John McCallum
Song – ACDC – Its a long way to the top if you want to rock and Roll
Movie – Walking tall, Joe Don baker version.
Congrats to Mike for big numbers last weekend at DoD PL Nats.

Getting a new belt from Best Belts this week. Fired up
Are you bothered by steroid use?
Not at all. It comes with the territory in the line of work I do (Professional Wrestling). I think theres a big big difference in say 250-400 mg a week of testosterone than guys who load up on 500+ Mg of test and other substances year round just to stay big and it ends up doing more harm than help. I used testosterone while wrestling in San Antonio and have nothing but good things to say about it. I don’t think an athlete should be allowed to take it if it makes the playing field uneven. But I’m in entertainment… not sports.
What’s your favorite meal you’ve had in March?
Homemade Chicken and Dumplings. Im unsure if this has been discussed as a 70s big meal but I love me some chicken and dumplings. It takes a good amount of time to make it (Around 2 hours if you do it the way I was taught) but its delicious, a big meal and can last throughout the day. Whole chicken, cream of mushroom soup, 3 cans of biscuits and all sorts of stuff.
What’s the most 70′s Big book? Movie? Song?
I cant really determine this. I have to shave my body and tan for what I do for a semi living so I can’t really have input on something as important.
You’re a pro wrestler? Got anything on youtube of your matches?
Also, Yosh if you read this, are you going to write up your WABDL meet experience? I am considering one of those meets in June so I’m curious to hear how they are.
Are you bothered by steroid use?
Mildly. I kind of like the idea of pushing limits in pro sports, but the average gym rat use is just so stupid. In a double squat suit kind of way.
Hit some PRs on my sixth week of a TM style program:
1RM Press: 160 lbs, +5 lbs PR
1RM Jerk: 265 lbs, +15 lbs PR
1RM Front Squat: 300 lbs, +10 lbs PR
I have some early day stuff of me on Youtube but for the most part it sucks due to me being incredibly new at the time, awkward in the ring and undertrained wrestling wise.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zH4zgvOMCJg
I’m in Pro Wrestling Onslaught’s Fusion Episode 1. Myself (Gym Candy Chuck Martin… I’m wearing a zebra skin singlet with horrid bleached blonde hair) and partner Sexy Junk Scotty Master Blaster against the Submission Squad from St. Louis. Its only clips from a match from Halloween 09 but I think its probably the best work that I have available online. Promoters are really bad about spreading out media of wrestlers.
The main promotion I work for just inked out a deal with gofightlive.tv (Internet PPV Provider) to start doing weekly one hour tv shows and two internet ppvs this year. Luckily some of my most recent work will be up and I’ve recently turned heel (Bad guy) and am about to go through a complete character overhaul.
Sorry to take away from the PR Friday post.
I did PR on two lifts this week.
Bench: 250
Squat: 370
Squat 350×5 (pr)
Bench press 295×5 (hard but got it)
Just started taking creatine this week, and I’m interested to see how much further I can go before I reset. I haven’t taken creatine in 18 months so we shall see.
Squat PR 427 x 3
Bench PR 230 x 4, Laugh it up.
Are you bothered by steroid use?
– No, I find them interesting. Not sure whether I’d ever use them, let’s see how far I get without them first.
What’s your favorite meal you’ve had in March?
– Not a chicken man really, but a few days back I had some Chicken breas’ & sushi, ‘t was brutal.
What’s the most 70′s Big book?
– Roger Penrose: The road to reality.
Movie?
– Don’t be a menace to south central whilst drinking your juice in the hood.
Song?
– The bass solo intro(which I have learned) to N.I.B. – Sabbath.
I posted my tactical strength challenge results on the March 10th post in the comments section. No big PRs except for the DB snatch. I used the 70 lbs DB and got 60 reps in 5:00. Last TSC, I did the open with the lighter weight for the snatch and only did 57 reps so I surprised myself. I don’t do DB or KB snatches in training so I didn’t really expect it to go up.
@hump1201
I did a write up and emailed it to Justin several days ago to the 70sbig.com email address. Justin probably gets quite a few emails I’d imagine.
@jmont
I’m not a crazy pro wrestling fan, but I do like Ring of Honor (ROH). I like the harder hitting Japanese type of pro wrestling rather than the drama filled WWE style of wrestling. I used to watch a lot of WWE wrestling in the early 2000s as a middle schooler but stopped watching it in high school. One of my friends who is into wrestling a lot suggested getting a ROH DVD a little bit ago and I thought it was awesome.
Still learning the oly movements, but did work up to a heavy single (relatively speaking) on cleans on Friday of 90 kg. The lifts are still a lot of fun.
Then I PR’d on some writs curls afterwords, God what a deep burn those things cause and made sure to take up the squat rack while doing it.
Meet results/PRs
90kg, 19 and under, Raw, Tested.
Squat 446.5 (16.5lb PR)
Bench 292.5 (22.5lb PR)
Deadlift 516.5 (21.5lb PR)
No Pr’s this week, I’ve f’d my training schedule up. Going back to MWF next week.
Song?: Anything Kyuss
Are you bothered by steroid use?
I’d say yes, when it contravenes the rules of a certain sport I do, but the sport lacks the guts/ability/infra to test for it.
What’s your favorite meal you’ve had in March?
Ate at “Montanas.” Can’t begin to tell you how happy the Beef Rib and chicken makes me.
What’s the most 70′s Big book? Movie? Song?
“Ecstasy of Gold” Ennio Morricone. I could do anything to the sound of that song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNGe7iK1O-4
PR:
Bought chalk. I realise it’s late in the game, but I often work out at gyms that don’t allow it (I know) and found it hard to procure otherwise. Easy Dead lift of 315 x5 That will be going way up.
Also:
SQ 269
Clean 179
Press 145
Also, annoying PR: doing 315 deads at the Y apparently means that every other short/small guy comes and talks to you. SHAT UP. GO LIFT.
@maslow you in the twin cities?
Squatted 350 & 355 this week. And got ace certified today. Never intend to implement their standards though…
PRs of the week:
well, my max for the week were a c&j of 115kg, a snatch of 80kg, and a front squat of 160kg (no belt).
On steroids, to each their own. I have always enjoyed watching top fuel athletics. I want people to be super human if I’m going to pay. I’m looking to see a 1k lb raw squat before too long. Well, without cloth gear.
Was Managing the Training of Weightlifters written in the 70s?
@Yosh
I dig me some Ring of Honor. Its good stuff. I also enjoy Pro Wrestling NOAH, Chikara and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla. Im not a fan of WWE at all but if they gave me a call it’d be a different story lol. I very much enjoy Japanese strong style over WWE style. Crazy someone on here has seen Ring of Honor. Had two matches with ROH guys. They can go.
PR? Just started GSLP. Lots of walking.
Best meal in March? 12lbs of brisket. Slow smoked and gone in two days.
70s BIG song-Slade “Mama weer all crazee”
70s BIG movie-“Pumping Iron”
70s BIG book- “Monster”
I am bothered by steroid use when used for bodybuilding in all cases this is mostly because I hate bodybuilding lol. I dont like it when used impropperly by people who have not met or have come close to their genetic potential. Also when people under 30 use them. I myself have not and will not use them anytime in the near future.
I mixed one kilogram of taco ground beef in with one box of craft dinner and taco sauces. it was very
awesome and was consumed in one sitting with 1 liter of whole milk.
I also have huge steaks once a week or so ranging from 0.8-1.2 kilograms lol. I marinate them in redbul for a few days and grill them up. I usually buy a roast and cut it in half or if it is small enough (0.8-1.2kg) I will just cook as is. and I almost always have perogies with them, they are basically a super food
http://caloriecount.about.com/calories-compliments-perogies-potato-bacon-i91085
Its very easy to consume at least 20 of these with a 2.2 pound steak. and 4 have 200 cals.
I have a back injury right now so I can barly deadlift, but yesterday I squated 165kg for 8 witch is a post injury PR for me.
song- The pitsburg syndrom by soilwork is pretty good
Book- I dont read much but the Alphabet of Manliness by Maddox is fairly awesome.
Movie-Independence Day is a favorite….and Im canadian lol
Have Not* met their genetic potenial****
Two PR’s this week. Squat 360 for a double, and DL 420 for a single. Ate about 6000 calories worth of chinese buffet a week or so ago. Best day I’ve had in a while.
Favorite Song: Anything Steve Winwood
Steroid Use: yes please. If I choose to “become a woman” I can get hormone replacement – so where’s the beef. If you’re anti-steroid for aesthetic use but pro-breast implants, then kindly fuck yourself.
Favorite Meal in March: same as everymonth – flesh tacos.
LawDragon – OUT.
