Shrug Thug

Brent does Brent-like things online. Here’s a story he told AC. I cleaned up the punctuation (The Shrug Thug refuses to use punctuation).

So, I’m benching at the globo gym and this fucking Asian American fuck face with his cap turned sideways on his fucking head, repping 135 is like, “say bro, you go to UTD?” (UTD is a school around here)

I am like, “Nah man, I didn’t go to school here.”

And he is like “Oh cool, what are you working out for? Getting cut, getting bigger, Strength?”

He proceeds to spend the rest of the workout making friends with me. He says he benched 280lbs at 155lbs and says he used to do 35 pull-ups before he stopped working out. There is a bullshit “leader board” at this globo gym ranking top 5 faggots at squat, bench, leg press, max pull ups, and max push ups. JH is like “I am gonna be on that list for pull ups” as if it’s some big fucking accomplishment.

I am like “Cool man, spot?” because I am benching and need a spot.

He is fucking all pumped about pull ups, he climbed all the way to the top of this big support beam in the middle of the gym (like a 50′ ceiling at least) and he is like, “Let’s do some pull ups. I am all about form man, that shit is the most important. I will show you some legit form on pull ups.”

So he asks me to show him how I do pull ups, and I do.

He says “Good form bro, let me show you how I do them,” and proceeds to not go to full extension.

He wants to “start a team” and have everyone train together. You remember that scene in Inglorious Basterds where they are in the bar and the SS officer is joking with Stiegler, and Stiegler very clearly wants to stab the guy in the face? That was me except instead of stabbing i would have just said, “Your civic fucking sucks and that spoiler you have on it is absolutely ridiculous.”

No, No, No Squat at 600 pounds

Glenn Pendlay coaches some good Olympic weightlifters. Unfortunately Max has a wrist injury that prevents him from lifting. He’s still squatting though:

Someone that is friends with Max sent me the vid after I had seen it, but they told me the following story:

True story: He had serious injury and not worked out for months, no squats no nothing. One morning he was training someone and was standing there in some running shoes, holding a coffee, while looking at his iPhone. Someone had left a squat bar set up with 200 kilos, and Max said “I bet I can squat this cold.” I assessed the situation as easy money for me, and a safe bet I would either call his bluff or he would fail. I offer up $20. He put down his coffee and iphone, walked to the bar a took my money. Not only did he not warm up in any way, he had not touched a weight in 6 months. Fast forward, and Max is back to training, the result a 601 lbs A2A squat.

Moral: Max is mutant strong, do not bet against him. Ever.

  1. 2 PRs this week.
    Bench 240#
    Squat 425#

Resetting all numbers and preparing for the USAPL Raw Nationals in August.

Six months means two full training cycles for me -> hoping to get a 1,200# Total at the meet. Need to put about 15# on the bench, 30# on the squat and 30# on the DL. I haven’t decided whether I will compete at 181# or 165#. 181# is probably more realistic.

    Who else will be there?

  2. I had hoped to make it to USAPL nationals this year, but there’s no way in hell. I won’t even be touching PR’s in the gym until May/June at this rate. Next year.

At least my bodyweight continues to improve, slowly. Down about a pound from last week.

How tall is Max, does anyone know? Seems like most of the 94kg guys are 5’8″-5’10”? He’s a beast.

  3. That story is hilaaaarious! My Finish best friend has similar douche like qualities. Except his fetish is with Volvos instead of Civics.

No PRs this week… Week 3 of an LP program I threw together:
    Press, 130# 2×5,1×16
    Squat, 240# 2×5, 1×15
    Bench, 220# 2×5, 1×11
    Deadlift, 455# x1
    Clean, 195# 3×3

I gave my best shot at decent programming and tried to combine Rip’s SS with Greyskull’s LP. Justin, would it be too brorific of me to ask you to critique/criticize/recommend the program I put together?

  4. New PR this week on the deadlift.

    325# x 3
    335# x 1

I am closing in on my goal of a 400# DL**.
Also, I have been living out of a hotel for most of the week – so I have been PRing on the breakfast meats on a daily basis!

    **400#DL = manhood!

  5. Prs this week.
190# bench (don’t bench consistently enough at all)
    210# clean
    315# squat
    355# deadlift

Getting somewhere… oh. 211 bodyweight is a PR, too. Starting to get chunky though. Do not want.

  6. Equipment PR – got my new belt from Best Belts on Wednesday and squatted and DL’d with it Thursday. The thing is a beast, but felt great. Even let me get into a good pulling position. Much more legit then the POS I had before. It’s a work of art.

Squat – 325x3x3 and 340×4 which felt awesome w/the new belt

    Press – 142.5x5x3

    Bench – 220x5x3

Still making gains in both presses which is sweet. It’s gonna be time in the next two weeks though to try and find a 1RM on the bench before competition. Then pick back up LP afterwards I guess

My DL is in the shitter right now, I need more frequency on that lift for sure in the future. I’ll take what I can get at the meet and hit it weekly afterwards.

  7. Max has heart!
    Brent is a good. :P

throw up PR- after heavy deads last Friday, I proceeded to throw up for 20 hours along with some rhea and uncontrolled pissing.

2 days ago finally able to hit the weights again.

Went to a CrossFit affiliate for the first time to get a little coaching on my cleans.

PR on dead hang clean from the “pocket”- deadlift lockout, no bending, hit 300! Really working on that last pull- triple extension, pull my shoulders up, and drop under the bar. Feels good.

  8. Oh. More, I guess. Shrugged 5 plates a side for 4×5.

Also, at Body by Ginger (my conditioning workout series for my rugby team) at least one person has puked at each one to date (3 sessions in). That seems noteworthy. And no, it hasn’t been me.

  9. oly training and eating, hopefully have some PRs on lifts in the next couple of weeks. The lifts are a lot of fun.

When I use to work out at a globo gym the problem I always had was dudes coming up to me to talk about no-explode or some other bullshit supplement that they were taking and the bathrooms were grotesque. Bally’s is the worst gym I have ever been to.

  10. Home Gym PR – Finally got my Olympic Weight Set!

I still have my standard set which I will probably sell for cash to re-invest in the home gym. I have a bunch of 50 lb Standard plates with the 1″ center hole…does anyone have experience bore-ing out the 1″ hole to a 2″ hole (no homo) to be used with an Oly set?

Haven’t lifted anything in 3 weeks, between travel and a bout of the Flu I have been out of commission, can’t wait to get back at it!

  11. @Chutson – I opened the box and thought the belt looked way too big, but it’s perfect. I went with silver/grey.

Also forgot my ruining clothes PR – ripped the ass right out of a pair of my pants the other day squatting down to play with my son, I was proud.

  12. Got kicked out of my gym for lifting too much weight today…

The best part was that I was still warming up. I bet that 90’s skinny fag who runs the gym was jealous. What a fuck face. Its even funnier because I am an alumni of both the ungrad and graduate level at the university. No more donations for you!

Needless to say I have no new PR’s as I was not allowed to lift today. Thanks mom…

Oh and I do crossfit, I’m not even that fucking big. What a goddamn joke. You guys could cheer me up and check out my blog though. http://www.afterwod.com its mainly crossfit related. not quite as cool as 70’s big that’s for sure.

  13. Doing a TM style thingie (tried an LP with no progress this december, so I figured this would be the way to go)
This is my second week now.
    PRs:
    Squat 160kg(~354lbs)x3 (a 10kg, long overdue PR)
Deadlift 202,5kg(~446lbs) x1 (been struggling with breaking 200kg for a long time)
    Power clean 110kg(~242lbs) 5×3

  14. PRs
    Bench 205×5
    Press 110x5x3
    DL 205×8
    BW 176#
Numbers are still out of wack but bench is hard and DL is easy so should be corrected in a couple months.

  15. Haven’t posted in a while.

    PR: Squat 280 X 20

Then I baked a turkey, ate two bites, and spent the night curled up in the bathroom. So I guess what we have here is an involuntary “Deload” week. Never thaw a turkey for more than a week. There is no amount of Frank’s Red Hot that can make it good.

  16. No PR’s this week since I am lifting in the USAPL Navy Open in Annapolis tomorrow.

However, I do plan my opening squat at 215kg which is 5 kilos higher then my previous meet PR of 210kg that I did back in July.

Thanks for a great website and good knowledge that is also very entertaining.

Hoping for a 230kg squat on final attempt!

  17. No PR’s. Just found out recent pain was from herniated discs at L4-L5, L5-S1. Have not squatted/deadlifted in 4 weeks. Any ideas on how to attack my restart? Should I work GPP or do a major deload and restart SS Linear Progression? Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

To clarify, a de-load is a lowering in volume/intensity to allow some rest. A reset is when you lower the weight. You would be more so “starting over”.

If it were me, I’d introduce the barbell lifts with light loads, and very slowly progress them up. I’d be more concerned with accumulated work to allow the structures around the bad vertebral segments to strengthen. Pushing too hard and getting hurt is all of your fault.

    –Justin

  18. DLed 185kg for a single (e1RM was 180), missed 195 and 200.

I’m somewhat pleased, in light of the fact that that was done in my Oly shoes, an inch high deficit (stupid), and ridiculously little sleep (no more than 6hrs/night Mon-Thu).

  19. PRs:

    Squat: 335# x 4
    Deadlift: 382# x 4
    BW: 215#

I have my second meet in 4 weeks

    M / 50 / 6’1″ / 215#

Glad to hear! Be smart with training so that you can continue to be a behemoth as time goes by. I knew several strong people that were in their 60s in Texas.

    –Justin

  20. Body weight 200 even.

Food PR: a 3.5-pound double-everything Chipotle burrito in 30 minutes (new body weight 203.5).

    All at 1RM:
    Deadlift – 345
    Squat – 300
    Press – 150
    Bench Press – 210

  21. PRs:

    Deadlift 230 x 4 (goal: 250 x 1)
    Press 80 x 8 (goal: 100 x 1)
    Bench 95 x 11 (goal: 135 x 1)
    Ring dips x 6 (goal: 10)

On the downside, having issues with my squat. Currently on 5/3/1, but am adding in a lightish 5 x 5 squat day to work on form.

  22. No lifting PRs, obviously. PR for most dramatic outfit and video set up for a couple of 20kg practice lifts yesterday.

I just want to thank you guys for the support. My meet is tomorrow. I’m going to go snatch and C&J the minimum, which is 21kg. I will be wearing a fuck ton of glitter and my pink zebra singlet. And, I am totally pulling a Jon North and getting the crowd to raise the roof before I lift. I figure that is my one chance to make it fun instead of utterly depressing. Good news is that my teammates should all qualify for good stuff – a few Senior lifters for Nationals and a Masters Lifter for Pan Ams and Worlds – if all goes as planned.

  23. Food PR ate a 1.68lb steak, so good.

Also had my first interview for personal training at my local gym that went really well, so I am counting that.

I also just found the only O-lifting gym in my city so I am stoked for that!

  24. Personal PR- For the first time since August 2010, when I injured my back due to a horrendous technical mistake in the squat, I have returned to lifting. I’m now up to a 65# squat… not quite like the 205# at 135lbs, but humility builds strength. And seriously, being able to squat again is like winning the lotto. While streaking. Exhilarating.

  25. Squat 455
    Shoulder Press 215
    Deadlift 565

got greedy and failed 2 485 squats… should have gone a little less and made a lift first. all 3 were prs. bw= 205.

  26. Been reading for weeks and finally posting. 2 wks into a TM cycle. 3 months post knee surgery.

    PRs this wk:
    DL: 1RM- 240k
    Squat: 5RM- 150k
    Bench: 5RM- 115k

  27. Good Job connfit.

    PRs:
    Dip +137.5×5
    CHINups +90×7
took Justin’s advice and finally flipped my hands around, result was one rep less than I’ve done at pullups but a wicked biceps pump.

  28. Brent’s story=Smilarious
    Max’s story=Demoralizing

    Here’s the weeks highlights:
Squat: no PR due to de-load (achey breaky back)
    Bench: 235x5x3
    Press: 155x5x3
    Deadlift: 365x5x1
Question for the community: My little girlish waist is no longer a point of pride but a hinderance to my squating ability. Without saying things like “CORE” how can I strength this part of the kinetic chain duing my LP?

  29. Well, I’ll mention my PRs.

    Squats – 315lbs
Deadlifts – 185lbs (trying for 205 later today)
    Benchpress – 95lbs

I’m starting a 6 week routine tomorrow. I hope to PR all of these in the next few weeks.

  30. probably late to the party, but:

    @gregor

might be best to get a machinist to bore out the plates, or just sell them and get some olympic sized ones on craigslist.

    @Jaybles

I like planks and side planks. can work them in at the end of your workout.
