Well…

…some videos don’t need an introduction or a summary.

Update

I nearly forgot about the Beard of the Day.

Zeus, god of gods

  1. That pull facial expression doesn’t need an introduction or summary.

Question: how far in advance are powerlifting meets normally scheduled? I’ve been checking powerlifitngwatch regularly and haven’t been able to find a squat/deadlift/bench meet scheduled in the mid-Atlantic region this spring.

This would be my first competition. A lot of meets have Strict Curl and no squats. I haven’t trained for curls and have trained for squats.

  2. I know it’s not PR friday, but I couldn’t wait… I ripped my first shirt today! At work, I wanted to do a quick set of push ups, but on my first rep I tore my shirt open! Thanks 70’s big, I think I am going to wear it at CrossFit tonight and finish it off!

  3. @275lb

My dad, who doesn’t train, pushed a wheelbarrow full of wet cement up a 6 foot ramp, for as many reps as it took to finish building our deck. THAT is Dad Strong.

  4. @275 I picked it up out of one of the vids about how to break in a belt. To me its the concept behind 70’s big. “functional fitness” not how many reverse dumbbell kickbacks you can do while balancing on one foot and rubbing your scrotum in a figure 8. more about what stillgrowing was saying “real world strength”, carrying shingles up a ladder, loading a dead pig into the back of a pickup, carrying furniture up a couple flights of stairs. Also about tall socks ans short shorts.

  5. Looks like the easter bunny brought Chris a ton of gear for his garage. Awesome stuff. Stockpiling gear off craigslist now for when I finally get my garage cleaned out.

and @JMOvechkin…that is a bud light TALL. TALLs are the right format whether they be bud light or not…

  6. Unrelated question: What would you recommend as an all-purpose bar for a weight room? The one I lift at is getting new bars finally and I was asked for some recommendations. Would a Texas Squat bar work?

  7. I think Dan John references ‘Dad Strong’ somewhere along the lines, saying its picking the engine block out of the old buick… i think of it as the incredible strength you watch your dad display because he’s doing something that plain old needs to get done

  8. Since I’d like to keep my life, I am not going to question the music or the choice of beer (in the middle of training, haha).

@275: These guys hit “Dad Strong” pretty much on the head. It’s the crazy shit that you can see your dad do when he hasn’t picked up a weight in God-knows how long but you, who can total 1500 at a PL meet, would struggle to do.

@Justin: Just wondering about Chris’s stint on SS (assuming he ran it, or some other very similar linear progression program)…what were his starting and finishing numbers, and how long did he stay on it for? I have to imagine that even his starting numbers were fairly impressive.

  9. Also, speaking of Zeus, I just so happen to be watching Disney’s “Hercules”. I don’t care if he looks more like a bodybuilder, both him and his father take 70’s Big to a new level. I mean, for fuck’s sake, Hercules tears open a volcano made of frozen lava and stone with his bare hands so that his father can bend lightning and throw it at animated Titans…yes, I get a little overly into Hercules, if such a thing is possible.

  10. Thanks el diablo and dcurrin. I’m going to consider that USAPL meet. My friend who is going to do it with me is hesitant to enter a usapl meet because apparently they have the strictest judging and this will be our first time being judged.

I nominate Bill Kazmaier to the 70s Big Hall of Fame. I also nominate the below photo(s) for Novembeard.

  11. Maslow – I gotta ask, what is up with his lower torso in that kaz2a.jpeg picture? It’s like he’s wearing a flesh colored, massive shirt and is a skinnier guy underneath.

  12. @Maslow-
My first ever PL meet was the USAPL Virginia States this past September. The judging was “strict” but fair. If you listened to the judges and did what they told you to do – there was no issue. The key rules are actually pretty simple:
Squat: don’t squat until the judge tells you to “squat”, then after you go to full depth and stand it up, don’t rack the weight until the judge says “rack”.
Bench: pretty similar, gotta pause on your chest until the judge says “press”.
Deadlift: no hitching and no dropping the bar.

To be honest, it is pretty much the same shit you do in the gym every day!
