Boom

Football is a sport: fact. Here’s a beautiful video of Browns running back Peyton Hillis bulldozing the Panther’s Charles Godfrey before scoring his third rushing touchdown. SB Nation says

Judging by his touchdown celebrations, he’s also a big fan of ’80s cage wrestling, all monster trucks besides Grave Digger (sellout), and the paleo diet.

Hillis is from Arkansas, so I’d tend to disagree with the paleo thing. He’s also definitely 70’s Big.

Also being a little shit (i.e. under 200 pounds) can only get you so far. Andre Johnson got pissed enough to punch Cortland Finnegan in the head. If you don’t know the background, Cortland is one of the dirtiest players in the league and has been fined several times this year for his assholery (I guess he’s trying to make up for being named “Cortland”). Aggressive, good; dickhead, bad. I want to point out that Johnson is 220+, and thus won the round.

  1. I had a pseudo-PR this weekend; I found myself somewhat interested in a football game that was on TV. That’s never happened before…

Now that I have your attention, I have a question; I want to invest in some sleeves to keep my knees cozy while squatting. There are a few different brands out there, and I’m not sure what to get. Everyone seems to love the blue Rehbands. I’ve heard it said that the thickness of the blue ones makes it hard to snatch and clean in them, because it limits the speed with which you can pull yourself under the bar, but I’ve seen some successful Oly lifters who use them. What about the grey Rehbands (the kind that Mike wears)? Thoughts appreciated.

  2. I have a pair of the blue Rehbands and have no complaints. No problems snatching or cleaning and jerking while wearing the blues. I can’t comment on the newer models except that the people I know who have a pair say the gray sleeves aren’t as durable.

  3. Justin I know you’re a Browns fan, and also think that you might hate the Pats, but this play featuring Benjarvus Green-Ellis pretty much made my weekend.

Do you think he squats much?

I was watching that game. He made that defense look 90’s Small right there.

  4. @Jake Briskin

I plan to order a pair of the blue Rehbands when I get some spare money. I had the TK bands and they split down the seam in the back. No clue on the new Rehbands, I just hear they aren’t as thick. I’m using the EFS heavy knee sleeves now, but need to stop since they are more wrap-like than sleeve.

  5. The whole Andre Johnson thing is teaching me the importance of teaching all of the guys on your fantasy team to take the back and lock in a RNC. I guess I’ve failed as a fantasy owner…

  6. As a fantasy owner of Andre Johnson I will not punish him any more than the league will. Cortland is a little shit and basically punched Andre in the face DURING the play.

Totally agree about the TK sleeves. They are not durable in the least and take 20 mins to put on. DO NOT GET THEM. I have the blue rehbands now and use them a ton, I can’t tell a difference in my speed on the third pulls in the snatch and clean.

  7. I spent yesterday outside all day getting my lips chapped as shit while watching my Redskins get whipped again. Not worth it. Thank providence hockey season is upon us.

The only silver lining was that I’m a Brett Farve fan and getting to see him play in person was great. He had a really solid rush for a first down to clinch the victory for the Vikings.

I had the opportunity to do move around some kettle bells Saturday night. I did a solid workout with them for the first time. Brutal! I was really feeling it yesterday. It’s a totally different, and I think complimentary, way of working the body compared to barbells. I wish I had a set. Unfortunately Gold’s Gym’s heaviest one is a zumba-small 35 lbs.

  8. Hillis was a beast at Arkansas and has really thrived with the Brown’s. I really enjoy seeing a fellow Arkansan lay out someone on the way to the end zone, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside!

Oh, and not sure about the Paleo part, he is a big hunter so I assume he eats his fair share of game…and hopefully supplements that with lots of cheese grits and biscuits and gravy!

Yeah, that dude totally isn’t Paleo.

  9. Good evening 70’s big family. I have a training question for anyone with this experience. I just got a disc replacement (not fusion) at C5-C6. Since injuring I have not been able to train (4 months). Are there any of you that started lifting again after having a cervical disc injury? Was approaching a 500 lb dead lift, 315 squat and 180 press prior to getting pummeled by a female bovine. Doctors and PT’s all have differing opinions from never lift heavy again (yuck) to go after it as soon as I can. Thanks.

I haven’t worked with anyone recovering from the surgery, but I would introduce it slowly and lightly. I’d also make sure my neck was in neutral alignment regardless of lift (looking at appropriate visual cues for squat, deadlift, and press).

  10. I am in the Air force and I had my annual preventative health assessment today. The nurse asked me how much I weighed. I told her 194 pounds and then she said that my weight was 190 pounds today. At my height of 5’7″ being 194 pounds meant that I would have to do mandatory nutritional counseling and 190 lbs was the upper limit for my height. I’m glad that the nurse didn’t make me go to that but it made me think that the Air force has a very 90’s small culture.

  11. Thanks for the insight Justin. I was thinking of going extremely light and getting mechanically more efficient from better technique. Have been working with a coach who I think is pretty good at spotting technique faults and giving the appropriate cues for correction. Perhaps it would be better just to avoid the angry bovines for a while. Thanks again.

  12. Dress shirts for guys with athletic builds?

Does anyone have a suggestion for a brand of dress shirts that’s good for guys who lift weights? I just measured myself and my measurements don’t really fit the mold on any of the brands I’m looking at. Neck: 17 inches, sleeves 32 inches, chest 44 inches. I’m (my mom for Christmas is) ordering online in the hope of finding a shirt that fits.

Brent Kim, please weigh in. Ever found a shirt that can holster those marbled traps?

Shirts don’t really fit me all that well, but I’ve actually found a few at Khols. Sometimes the neck doesn’t fit half a year later. At least they are cheap, if that’s what you were looking for.

  13. i’m sure i could get a shirt tailored but no, i’ve never worn a dress shirt that didn’t make me look like a fucking gordon

i’m absolutely not saying that i have a large neck or traps, but every shirt i’ve ever worn has either been very tight around the neck or preposterously long in the sleeves … i’d be surprised if there wasn’t a brand that could accommodate a build like mine, but i don’t give enough of a fuck to look for one considering the most important parts of my wardrobe are the ones that i wear to train

  14. Late night addition compliments of MNF, Takeo Spikes’ neck is definitely 70s Big.

    Gruden for President in ’12!

Spikes has always had that neck. Same thing with Posluszny.

I also like Gruden as a commentator.

  15. Update: I just found this site http://www.bestcustomshirt.com/

You can put in your exact measurements. I have no idea about the quality of the shirts. I’m going to try it out. Even before weight lifting I never could button the top button. I’ve got to wear a suit and tie every day and the more weight I gain the more I look like a total douche.

  16. by the way Justin

the average duration that the ball is actually in play in football is 12 minutes

average length of a play is 6-7 seconds

i’m just not impressed with that

it’s not even max effort exertions, i mean honestly? i know 6 year olds that play harder than that

you know what’s more athletic than football?

Diane. Linda. Helen. triple alternating Tabata power cleans, front squats, and kipping pull ups.

you absolutely can’t argue that football is a sport

I’m not even going to give you more a response other than this sentence.

    –Justin

  17. football is a fucking commercial product

it’s a vessel to package sports drinks, athletic wear, and really shitty beer

you could argue that football and the current state of the American marriage are exactly the same

  18. I saw no football in any of the clips.

Some of the players touched the ball with their hands, they were wearing protective uniforms and the ball was not a ball, just a kind of oblong shape.

  19. @Maslow

one of my wife’s coworkers apparently found better sizing of dress shirts at brooks brothers. Unfortunately, I imagine they are probably expensive since they’re from BB.

I’ve found that some brands have a “slim fit” which just means that its cut narrower at the bottom vs. the fucking tent that every regular dress shirt seems to be.

  20. @Maslow

this may be a little late but oh well…

I have been getting Large Daniel Cremieux shirts from Dillards for the last 2 years. You can usually find them on sale for like 15-20 bucks and they have done pretty good for me, not a perfect fit but you cant really argue with the price.

  21. @maslow smithb9 is right…Brooks Brothers is the best. The slim fit are cut more narrow at the waist line. I wear a 17-34 and also have 44 inch chest. They fit perfect and doesnt look like you have a parachute on.

Yeah, slim cut is a must if you’re a muscular guy. Otherwise the shirt will be all baggy and willowy.

  22. Big Pats fan but since Peyton Hillis has come around absolutely trucking fools, I think I have a new favorite player. I gotta find me a Hillis jersey, dude is a beast! As much as I hated seeing him run ruckshot on the Pats I love hardnose football and getting beat by a guy like that is respectable. I want to be like Peyton Hillis when I grow up. He’s fun to watch for sure
