Still Pumping

Whether you are a fan of Arnold Schwarzenegger or not, he is an inspiring man. He has lived his life in a continuous desire to succeed. In this video as well in his autobiography, he puts an emphasis on having a mindset that won’t fail. Everyone on this site isn’t going to be the best in the world at what they do, but you can still set your goals and stomp towards them, never letting up. Whether it was bodybuilding, business, acting, or politics, Arnold knew what he wanted and did everything he could to obtain it. Let’s do the same.

PR Friday — keep all of us posted on your training along with your recent personal records.

  1. PR’s this week:

successfully smoked a brisket on Sun.

Did 185lbs x2x2 on cleans. Not really a PR but something I hadn’t done before

Deadlifted 345lbs last night for a +40lb PR. in flip flops.

BB Shrugged 325×8, also not really a PR but something I hadn’t done before

Going to smash some Snatch and C&J PR’s tomorrow hopefully. Would like 80/100 (currently at 75/90)

  2. Survival PR: Had issues with chest pains lately and after a whole battery of tests and BS I’m alive and well and not dying anytime soon.

Time to get back to work!

  3. Deadlift 1 X 9 at 405
    Squat 10 X 3 at 335
    Shrugs 1 X 5 at 505

    back up to 93 KG.

“Jesse Ventura was delighted to find out from the wardrobe department that his arms were 1″ bigger than Arnold Schwarzenegger’s. He suggested to Schwarzenegger that they measure arms, with the winner getting a bottle of champagne. Ventura lost because Schwarzenegger had told the wardrobe department to tell Ventura that his arms were bigger. ” – IMDB Trivia about Predator.

  4. Don’t forget that Arnold also puts on the best convention in the world every year in Columbus, OH, too. The Arnold Sports Classic has the best displays of anything and everything strength related under the sun, and it keeps getting better every year! Where else can you see the likes of Jay Cutler, Mikhail Koklyaev, Derek Poundstone, Lou Ferrigno, Rampage Jackson, Ed Coan, and Arnold himself all in one place?

PR’s: None this week (de-loading after a training cycle before starting a new one), but I’ll be going for a deadlift PR tonight (hopefully 562-569)

  5. PRs:

Deadlift: 295 lbs x5–so close to the goal. That means it’s time to start thinking about a new goal.

I’m starting to like squatting in my lifting shoes. It’s not feeling awkward anymore. I’m still deadlifting barefoot.

Equipment: Inzer Forever belt came in the mail. I used it at my last work out and it sure did hurt. I came away with some nasty pinching bruises on my sides. Then I read about how I was supposed to step on the belt etc to break it in. Woops.

Arnold is THE MAN. He’s a master of everything he touches. Gotta love the NFL films background music in that clip too. I recently watched “Pumping Iron” for the first time. I love the part where he’s dogging Furigno in the pump up room. And he’s even got great jokes today! I actually heard a good one last night. I’m told this is a true story…and I just found it online.

“My friend played in a Pro-Am with California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. They introduce themselves and walk up to the first tee. Arnold has this huge cigar in his mouth as he puts the tee in the ground and asks my friend, “When was your last blow job?”
My friend chuckles a little bit and says, “A couple nights ago, I guess.” Arnold doesn’t say anything. Friend pulls back the club and mid backswing (in his “Terminator” voice) asks, “How did it taste?” and swings through and shanks the ball 50 yards dead right out of bounds.

  6. Lots of PRs this week:

    Squat: 5x125kg (~275lbs)
    Bench: 2x105kg (~230lbs)
    Deadlift: 1x160kg (~350lbs)

Deadlift was a 2x bodyweight pull, the first I’ve done since putting on about 10kgs. I’m a bit annoyed I only got 1 rep. I thought I’d get 3 but right from the warmup I wasn’t feeling powerful. I think I’m still recovering from the squats.

  7. Started the SS Novice linear Progression 10. september, with a bodyweight of 178 lbs./ 81 kg
    Progressions
    Squat 220,5lbs to 265 lbs
    Benchpress 176lbs to 187lbs
    Press 100lbs to 110lbs

All progressions are 3 sets of 5 rep
    Bodyweight today: 187 lbs
Tried my first power snatch in a Crossfit workout with 40 kilo for 10-9-…to 1. Great lift

  8. Steffan, is that, you started your progression on the 10th of september, like 1 week ago? and you progressed 45lbs on your squat in 1 week?

Bodyweight PR: I always thought (based on what M&F was feeding me) that I was a hard-gainer. I took all the magazine advice and the most I ever gained was 5 lbs or so. Turns out I didn’t need supplements and a crazy diet, just MORE MILK and MORE FOOD! since starting GOMAD 2 weeks and a day ago, I’m up 14 lbs to 189, the heaviest I’ve ever been. I expect the weight gain to slow here soonish, but’s I’m psyched about being 11 lbs from adulthood so quickly!

I also got asked straight up by a co-worker the other day if I’m taking streoids because I’ve gotten so big lately, haha, “Nope, just milk” I told him. Love it!

And in related news squated 240x5x3 and am now 35lbs from my old 1RM

  9. Who the hell doesn’t like Arnold?

    Squat: 365 x 3 x 5
    Bench: 230 x 3 x 5
    DL: 415 x 1 x 5 (missed 425 yesterday, got 4 reps)
    PC: 205 x 5 x 3

Recently reset on my press, and now need to reset on my DL. Hopefully I can get them a bit higher before needing to go to some intermediate programming.

If I’m competing in early Nov, does anyone know when I should start practicing the pause on the bench? Also when to start taking triples and 1RM and such to get an idea of where I am?

Does anyone have a good site to buy a singlet from?

    Thanks guys.

@Maslow: I tried pulling in shoes for a while and I still prefer barefoot as well.
@Matt: Congrats on the weight gain dude.

  10. Long timer lurker, first timer poster..

This might seem like a strange food PR to some, but today I ate meat for the first time in over 7 years. (puts on flame suit)

    Progress:
Clean and jerk from 110kg to 125kg
Muscle snatch from 60kg to 70kg

  11. Weighted Pullup +75 x 9
    Dip +88×6

When will the details of the September TSC be posted?

I’m wondering if we are going to use the new reference scoring system from the TSC site or the old one which is based on sum of your rank in each event.

    Score = ((Deadlift/440 + Pullups/20 + Snatches/100)/3)*100

New one is preferable because it prevents gaming the system and burrowing people or punishing people with 600lb deadlifts and/or 30 rep strict pullups.

    @mgd: singlets.com I’ve heard?
@Floorpunch: I was a vegetarian for a couple years until Fall 08. When I stopped (due to excess cottage cheese trama) I didn’t suddenly get stronger but I found I got colds less often so my training was less interrupted. More importantly though I started to enjoy eating more because I had more than just eggs & diary as my high quality protein sources. And the resulting calorie increase made huge differences.

  12. Back squat 195 lbs x 2
    Deadlift 250 lbs x 1
Behind the neck rack jerk 154 lbs x 1
    Push press 120 lbs x 1

I’m really happy with the squat and deadlift, since my goals were 200 lb squat and 250 lb deadlift by September 20. I’m going to max at the Gorilla Pit in two weeks.

The rack jerk was a 15 lb PR, and I have more than that if I can spend time working my split. I almost had 159 lbs, but I told myself I was only doing one attempt. The push press was a huge disaster and I should have had more, but I’ll take it because I hadn’t put more than 105 lbs up from the front rack since fucking my shoulder in May.

    F/34/5’8/138 lbs

  13. @kittenSmash: Thanks, I’m already enjoying food soooo much more, so I ain’t going nowhere ;)

@Antigen: I was actually vegan, so I had to eat a fuck of a lot of nuts, beans/lentils and tofu. Getting enough cals. and so was never really a problem for me, but the amount of bland tasting foods I had to chew through in a day was painful.

  14. ^MattTruss223
Correct! did 220,5 lbs 10. sep.
When the 12th I made a jump to 242,5 by mistake (wanted another go for 220,5, because I changed training location) It went well anyway, so did 253,5 the 14th and latest 265 today (17. sep)Which was a fricking hard set, did it at a crossfit box, and i don’t have my own belt yet, so beltless.
ps. Hope you can see past my poor English (Danish Fan)

  15. Arnies coming to my school to speak for out Distinguished Speakers Series at The University At Buffalo in NY. January, 27th! i cant fucking wait!!!!!!! DILLON!! YOU SON OF A BITCH!

  16. PR: Close Grip Bench 290×1. This was a 5 pound PR over any other bench I’ve ever done. Hoping to break the 300 mark soon with a standard bench. Some different lifts I’ve done recently, not really PR’s as they are the first time I’ve done them, a 335×1 Zercher Squat, and a 415×1 Snatch grip deadlift from a defecit.

  17. Been giving Arnold-sounds (what ever that is) in the gym lately. Resulted in some PBs:

    Power Snatch: 75 kg
    C&J: 100 kg
    Power Clean: 115 kg

Still a bit whimpy with bw at 80 kg, but as long as the other kilos goes up, I don´t care if I get more defined mazzles!

  18. 5’8″, 215 lbs

I have been giving the Chaos and Pain workouts a try to swtich it up from doing 5’s.
    Saturday did supersets of:
    -Press: 160x12x2
    -Weighted Pullups: 25x10x3

    Sunday:
    Squat: 365x12x2

    Monday – superset of:
    Shrugs 495x10x3
    Pushdowns: 210x10x3

    Tuesday-rest
Wednesday-epic fail in the gym, tendons acting up so I stoped after warmup to prevent injury…

    Thursday – superset of:
    BTN push press 235x15x1
    Front squat 235x10x3

  19. Snatched 90kg, big PR. Weighing about 84kg. Then I sprained my left wrist slightly trying to clean 125kg, but it’s on the mend. Hopefully it’ll be ready to go next week for the TSC.

  20. @Antigen: Thanks. Seems to be exactly what I want. And for a fair price too.

How do people feel about knee sleeves for squatting? Do they offer any protection or not worth it? I noticed that AC had them on when squatting at nationals.

  21. Lifting PRs:
    Deadlift: 400×5
    Clean: 225x3x2

    @mgd134:

From what I’ve read from stuff in Rip’s books and posts, he recommends that you pretty much only taper on the final week or two before competition if you’re in the novice/intermediate stage. I’m planning on dropping presses about 3 weeks out and doing some triples for each lift on the Tuesday before competition (which I’ll use as my openers).

  22. bench PR 160×5

insanity PR…attempting to run the Russian Squat routine on top of the C/P deadlift routine.

Just completed week 1 of RSR and week 3 of C/P deadlift routine.

Thinking of sending in a video to you guys of my 315 and 335 deadlift.
    What do you think?

  23. Squat PR 375×2

Hope to set a fantasy football asskicking PR in the 70sbig league this weekend. I’m the Jackwagons, I think I’m playing kittenSmash?

Who are the rest of you in the league?

  24. Running Wendler’s 5/3/1; Scheduled for 445×1 on squat, kicked out 445×7…new belt is helping immensely.

@Real_Scots; “Survival PR…I’m alive and well and not dying anytime soon.”

Man, this had me laughing so hard! Made me realize I should start keeping better track of my own survival PRs. Like the time I didn’t get hit by that bus, or when I fixed my own brakes last week.

Best of luck to you, brother.

“Here’s a good rule to live by; Always try not to get yourself killed!” – George Carlin

  25. PRs this week:
Squat 285 lbs for 3 sets of 5
    Deadlift 305 lbs x5

Squat and deadlift are doing awesome, 305 feels close on the squat and the deadlift should get to 325 in two weeks.
Was supposed to Press 135 lbs for 3 sets of 5 but I was way too tired to do that today, I only did 130 for 5/4/2 (I had blown that weight away last time i did presses).

Equipment PR: brand new barbell made by York, very nice quality, cleans should be fun with it.

  26. Second week of 5/3/1
    PRs
    Press: 190×5 (+5)
    DL: 370×8 (+40)

    Apple picking PR:
    One bushel picked
Six apples eaten in one hour

Something struck me about a CFFB/TTMJ post about the amount of sugar in an apple and the Paleo uproar that followed.

Piled on large order of honey hot chicken wings, pound of steak tips, onion rings and a large salad an hour later.

Subsequent PRs for porcelin bowls filled and O-rings almost blown over the next 12 hours.

    Apples are God’s laxative.

  27. I emailed Justin back when the site began and nominated Arnold and Franco for the Hall of Fame… I still think they both should be in it. I mean – Arnold created and defines 70’s Big.

Even though he was better known as a bodybuilder, he competed in power and weightlifting all throughout 60’s setting several world records and winning basically every competition he entered. His best known lifts (correct if you have better info):

    Back Squat – 470# (late 60’s)
    Bench Press – 440# (late 60’s)
    Deadlift – 710# (late 60’s)
    Press – 264# (early 60’s)
    Snatch – 243# (early 60’s)
    Clean and Jerk – 298# (early 60’s)

    His other 70’s Big accomplishments:
    – 5 Mr Universe Titles
    – 7 Mr Olympia Titles
    – Creator of the Arnold Classic which features bodybuilding, weightlifting, strongman, etc
    – Revolutionized mainstream fitness culture and society through his physique and ensuing popularity for that physique in numerous movies including cult-classic Pumping Iron
    – Author of several books that have started/helped many athletes begin weightlifting (i.e. Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding, Education of a Bodybuilder, etc)

He is Numero Uno and I’ll say unashamedly the inspiration for me to even begin working out back as a 15 year old kid (his Encyclopedia for Bodybuilding was my Bible). Granted he wasn’t as strong as Franco (who I think should also be in the 70’s Big HOF – his strength resume is much more impressive than Arnold’s and I think he’s probably pound-for-pound one of the strongest men to ever live). All that to say though – the 70’s had big guys pretty much because of Arnold and the 70’s big guys were Arnold and his friends. I can’t think of anyone else that defines 70’s Big like Arnold, and he deserves a serious look at being in the 70’s Big Hall of Fame (despite what he’s done as governor haha).

I’ve never seen lifting numbers for Arnold. Franco was an amazing athlete and strong lifter.

    –Justin

  28. Back squat 275x5x3.

Dead Lift 295x5x3 – 300 will fall this week, I think I’ll make it to 310 before I stall.

Now if I could get my press and bench press to increase.

  29. Terminator was on TV tonight, first time I’d seen it in a while.

I totally forgot how scary Arnold looked without eyebrows during the second half of that movie.

I’m hard pressed to think of another guy that could pull that look off.

  30. All the best to everyone on their hunt for PRs.

    Last DL session: 375lbs X 8 (wanted 10)
    Squat: 295lbs X 11
    BP: 205 X 8
    Military Press: 145 X 6

I’m a little envious of Brandon S, who managed a 500lb squat, with a 455DL. My DL is a hair better than that, but I haven’t been able to Squat even 400lbs for years.
