Let’s Talk About Food

Cooking has become increasingly popular over the years on television, and it has branched throughout the internet. I’d like to share two websites, Bargain Bites and swEEts, that may entice some of you. These sites are run by lovely ladies that are friends of mine who are also married to or dating some of my good friends. For those who are looking for delicious soup recipes, consider visiting sites like https://makeadish.net/recipe/french-onion-soup-du-jour/.

Bargain Bites is pretty cool because it is focused on cooking all different kinds of foods while on a budget, and Aimee, who runs the site, has created all of the recipes on her own. She was just telling me the other day about her Triple Threat Cookies that look pretty awesome.

swEEts is run by Evan, another third of the top three funniest girls I know, and is full of, well, sweets — cookies, cupcakes, cakes, buttercreams/icings, breads, breakfast foods, and other desserts. Some of you might be amused by these Guinness and Bailey’s Swirl Brownies:

I can personally vouch for the cooking and baking prowess for both of these gals (especially Evan’s cookies, oh man), so you can just slobber at the recipes or give it a try. Both would be more than happy to help you out if you wanted to e-mail them.

We’ve also had quite a few posts on 70’s Big about food, and I’ll recap some of them here.
Chicken Fried Steak by Gant — First and second posts
Gant is also the king of barbecue — Brisket and lots of meat (totally no homo, Gant doesn’t play like that)
Jacob shares his chili recipe
Eating to gain
And a great post by Gant on general eating habits that is applicable to lifters and people trying to eat healthy.

That should have made you hungry, so let’s talk about food in the comments. You can talk about your favorite food or what you’ve eaten recently. In the last few weeks I’ve had three of my favorite meals that my mom makes; pork loin, buffalo wings, and chicken and dumplings. It is the bayst.

  1. For shakes: Heavy whipping cream (100 calories per ounce) and almond meal are great additions to shakes. Both are very calorie dense, and the almonds impart a subtle nutty flavor, and some decent time on the john. Throw in a scoop or two of ice cream, and you’ve got a nice creamy 2,000 Calorie shake, with not too much sugar.

The burger chain Fatburger is a great choice for getting 70s Big. You can order as many patties as you want in your burger. I’m up to four – at half a pound each, that’s a 2 lb burger. Plus the guy at the counter always gives me free soda.

  2. Those brownies look incredible.

Last week I went on a cruise. Gained 5# (without GOMAD) in 5 days. There were all day buffets and a sit down fancy-ass dinner where you could oder as much dinner as you want. 2 dinners every night.

  3. oh to be 205 again… i managed to work up to a semi-jiggly ~255 and now can no longer fit in the clothes on the left side of my closet. its time for daddy to slim down, and i’m pretty sure the only way to do it is with diet. any tips besides less carbs?

John Scheaffer has a good Q&A for this very subject and does consulting as well. I’d go read his stuff.

  4. @wannaBburly- best way to slim down is to follow gants advice and reduce your portions a bit, eat a more balanced meal and lay off the food after 7 or so. I changed my body composition from about 215 or so where I could not fit into any of my clothes to a 200 where I fit into all of the my clothes and I am stronger by eating a bit less and really being careful with the simple carbs and garbage foods, especially after 7. I also threw in a few extra nights of cardio along the lines of late night basketball 3 to 4 times a week. I used to do crossfit and crossfit football conditioning exercises but basketball is just way more fun and still full of explosive movements. hope that helps

  5. We’ve got a wonderful Taco Truck just down the street from my house (I live in Nashville, so this is an odd thing, it’s not like Texas). They make wicked tacos, but I asked, and they also sell meat by the pound.

2 quesadillas + 1 pound of Beef Barbacoa + some lime= total win.

I have no idea the nutrition, but it fills me up for hours and tastes amazing, and all for under $10

  6. I smoked a 4lb brisket last weekend using Gant’s recipe, came out pretty good.

This weekend I’m planning on smoking a pork shoulder, as long as hurricane earl doesn’t ruin the party.

  7. Damnit Justin, you just had to mention buffalo wings. I drooled on my shirt.
    Vamshi,
I love the look I get when ordering McGangbangs.

My favorite thing, besides steak, is pho, Vietnamese soup. Lots of sliced beef (or chicken if you suck), rice noodles, cilantro, basil, onions, jalapenos, all thrown into some killer broth. I’m fucking addicted to the shit. Have been for years. Must be the asian in me. But be cautious, there are alot more shitty places, than good ones. Most places broth is too bland, which sucks balls.

I don’t know why anyone would get chicken over pork at a Vietnamese place. Fun fact: Brent popped my Vietnamese food cherry.

Yes! I had pho yesterday. I used to go to a place called Pho 75. But that wasn’t good enough. Then I tried Pho 95. Getting better, but I still needed a little more power in my power lunch. Yesterday I tried the future: Pho 2000, loaded with bean sprouts, tripe and organ meats. It changed my life. What’s next…Pho 2001? I don’t think I can handle that.

  9. You guys all suck. I’m in the middle of trying to cut weight for a USAPL meet on September 11th. I lost 8# so far and have 5# more to go.
When this one is over, I’m moving up weights. Cutting weight is for kids, not old farts like me!

  10. If you like pork and you find yourself in a filipino restaurant with crispy pata on the menu, ORDER IT. Nothin’ says comfort food like a big hunk of deep fried pork leg.

  11. One of my favorite post work out meals is a chicken pot pie with added chicken. Either that or a couple tuna melts. If I’m in a hurry or I dont feel like making anything Ill just grab a carne asada burrito, the place I go to makes them in one size: enormous.

  12. So I decided to enter my first PL meet in November (USAPL Socal Regionals). I accidentally weigh 230-235 lbs now, up from 225 a couple months ago. Rather than slimming down to get into 220 I think I’m just gonna keep growing into the 242 class, especially since it’s my first meet. Bring on the food!

Speaking of food, I’ve made Jacob’s chili recipe almost every week for the past couple months. It’s just so damn easy and tasty. I’ve mixed it up with turkey, pork, beff, chicken, but I’d like to try some lamb and maybe bison. Any creative meat ideas for chili?

  13. I made two chicken fried steaks dinner last night, and for desert I had a big bowl of grass fed chili. Relatedly, the best CFS I ever had was in Texas, made by a skinny little punk girl out of fresh venison. word.

  14. Maslow,
Hell yeah, glad to see someone else knows how damn good it is. I sure wish the ones up here in WA were rated by numbers for how awesome they are. I might have to go today, it’s been since Sunday…
    BloodAndOi,
pot pies are the shit, try adding gravey over everything with them

  15. Do this:
    1) Buy an 8lb pork shoulder
    2) Cut it in half
    3) Smother it with brown sugar and Kosher salt and ground pepper
    4) Place it in your (woman’s?) crockpot overnight in the fridge
    5) Plug it in first thing in the morning on LOW
    6) Dinner time (8-10 hours later) take it out
    7) Feast.

Do not ask any questions and do not deviate from the above recipe. Go do it now.

  16. @jdp:

Crockpots are the greatest invention ever devised by mankind after the barbell and BBQ! So easy and so good.

    1. Put meat in pot
    2. Season to taste
    3. Turn on
    4. Let sit for a few hours
    5. EAT.

    It works with almost anything.

  17. Damn Justin, your friends sure can cook.

Though this has nothing to do with the topic at hand, I figured this would be a good place to ask…I’m planning on ordering this belt, anything I might be missing (besides that it’s off eBay, but it is new)?
    http://cgi.ebay.com/Powerlifting-Belt-MyHOUSE-Sports-Gear-xs-sm-med-lg-xl-/260574873805?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cab7908cd#ht_1301wt_911

I have read all the belt posts several times, just double-checking. Thanks men.

  18. Should have included this: I’m only 17 with not a ton of money to throw around, so I’m looking to get something for pretty cheap (but of course still solid quality), which is why I originally checked eBay. The belt will be used for Deads, OH Presses, and Front Squats (and Back Squats when my upper back finally recovers). I’ve never tried a belt with PCs, but I likely will give it a go at one point…Any other recommendations (instead of the above belt)? Things I’m missing?

  19. I never tire of the look on the Brazilian Barbecue Guy’s face when I ask for more, no more! The triple take is always worth it. That and the garlic beef :)
