Favre on PR Friday

PR FRIDAY – post all KINDS of personal records to the comments, yo.

I played football throughout high school like most guys (that’s American football for you Euro readers), and I played a year in college. The sport of football fits well with this whole attitude thing that 70’s Big has grown into. One player exudes this attitude into the way he plays, and that player is Brett Favre.

Favre is a tough quarterback, likes to compete, comes through in the clutch, and has fun doing it. He’s started over 300 games consecutively — an insane feat that is probably one of the most impressive sport statistics ever. Oh, and he’s coming back for a 20th year.

Favre seen here NOT wearing under armor

This isn’t news to anyone who casually follows football or the NFL. The sports “media” (code for “annoying bunch of pains in the asses”) have been talking non-stop about whether or not he was going to retire or not because of his surgically repaired ankle. Without any evidence of whether or not he would retire, that maintained priority over most sport networks. I remember seeing the dorky guy with the mustache on ESPN talking to Favre as he sat in his giant diesel truck. The guy was all, “This humidity is making my makeup smear. Do you think there are any scones left in the media van?” and Brett was all, “I’m gonna go edge my lawn and drink a few beers.”

Three weeks ago I predicted that Favre would play this season and he was essentially skipping training camp on purpose. And you know what? I don’t give a damn. He should skip training camp. Why would you want a 40 year old guy having multiple practices a day, stressing his body (that can’t accept the same stress it did five, ten, fifteen, or twenty years ago), adding to his year’s work load when you want him to still make an impact in late January? It’s physiology, folks.

Too much stress would weaken Favre throughout the season. Take into account the ankle surgery — that is another structure in his body that shouldn’t be stressed more than necessary. Guys who have been in the league for 12 or 15 years shouldn’t have to worry about training camp so that they can actually be effective during the season instead of burning out. And don’t try and pull that shit that he “plays quarterback” and the QB doesn’t go through a whole lot of physical trauma. Favre gets his ass kicked on a regular basis, but he gets back up and continues slinging the ball down field. That’s 70’s Big.

I’m rooting for Favre and the Vikings this season. I’m a Browns fan, but we all know how that is gonna end. We’ll be talking about football more, probably about once a week when the season gets underway. It’s a sport that is pretty relevant for us since it involves above average strength, power, speed, and conditioning. Irregardlessly, (a term that is used specifically to troll you) most of us will be talking about it anyway.

Late edit:

As long as we’re talking football, you may as well watch this. I have to hate Brandon Jacobs because he plays for the Giants, but I have to admire him because he’s…Brandon Jacobs.

  1. Started up with a deload week on the 5/3/1 program to get back into the gym after a week off. Everything felt great, but I can tell starting with a deload week was a good idea for getting back in the game.

  2. First time poster. Love the site.
    Press 190×5 (+5)
    Squat 365×5 (+10)
    Deadlift 405×3 (+20)
All modern PRs for me (modern meaning since I started to lift like a man again this year after taking about 15 years off)

Guys, what’s thoughts on wearing belts on the heavy lifts? I’ve been going raw on my lifts but starting to approach some weights that I was hitting in college when i (prob incorrectly) always wore a belt.

Interested in the perspective. Probably posted somewhere before…

  3. Squat 220 5×3
    Deadlift 320 3×3
    Benchpress 185 5×3

Next Squat day I will make my summer goal of two large plates – yup.
Deadlift has been going up consistently: my grip has been holding me back and I finally got some chalk.

But my favorite PR…wait for it…men’s size Large underwear. Meds were getting snug.

    —–
Congrats on the squat. Two plates is a nice milestone. Also, congrats on the TMI PR.

Weak grip? Two minutes at the end of your workout will take care of that.

Monday: Grab some dumbbells and do a set of Kroc rows with each arm. Grab something heavy and do 30 reps with it. Go home.

Friday: Run-the-rack Farmer’s walks. Grab the heaviest set of DBs you can manage and walk until your grip gives out (don’t hook grip). Then grab the next size down and do it again. Repeat until you clear the rack. Manually straighten out your fingers and go home.

  4. Several PRs this week:

FOOD: I’m on day 15 of drinking a gallon of milk every day. Bodyweight yesterday was 183 (10 pounds gained). Inspired by 70s Big, I’m going to an all-you-can-eat Mongolian BBQ tonight. HUGE!

    SQUAT: 240 5×5
    BENCH: 230 5×5
    DEADLIFT: 270 1×5
I plan to set a press PR tomorrow.

I came across an article that may help explain why veterans like Farve can get in shape without putting in as many hours at training camp as younger athletes.

    http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2010/08/muscle-memory/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+wired%2Findex+%28Wired%3A+Index+3+%28Top+Stories+2%29%29

I’m pretty sure Albert Haynesworth has a copy of this article taped to the inside of his locker.

  5. Finally got a week off of work and I have been able to take my time at the gym, warm up properly and get enough sleep. I also have moved out of Golds and to my buddies garage gym in Vienna, VA. Well what do you know, I frigging pulled a 50 lb pr on my DL and accomplished my goal for the school year already (which hasn’t begun) and pulled 505. It was a day of magnificence and glory.

  6. “The sport of football fits well with this whole attitude thing that 70′s Big has grown into. One player exudes this attitude into the way he plays, and that player is Brett Favre.” -Where does the crying fit it?

  7. @Paul Sousa:

I assume he meant Favre comes through for the other team.

    PR:
Back squat: 215. Felt great to finally crack 200.
Taking the next 8 weeks off of CF to do a strength cycle. PRs, ho.

  8. “I’m a Browns fan, but we all know how that is gonna end” OHHH MANNNNNNNN that had me rollin.

Is it 70’s big to be in 4 fantasy football leagues this year?

  9. After taking a month to get some conditioning back, and leaning back out about ten lbs after GOMAD, I hit some maxes this week

-Deadlift 415×1 (could have gotten 425 easy, but went for 455 and barely missed) tied PR
-Squat 315 (missed 325 in the hole), down 40 lbs from the last day of my SS run, need to start squatting more!
-Bench, maxed for the first time, 185.

Still need to work on my upper body strength. That and my squat has been sucking.

Food PR: Hit the local Korean restaurant with my gf. Ordered their large plate of bulgogi, ate the whole thing, went down the road to the taco truck, bought a pound of beef bbq, and ate all of it as well in one long meal. So tasty!

Equipment PR: get my new belt tomorrow!

  10. Man, as much as I want to hate Favre, I just can’t do it, he’s too easy to root for with his childlike energy and love of the game even 20 years in. For some reason I can’t really see Favre banging any serious weight in the gym though. Seems to me his workout is throwing on his wranglers and playing pick up ball with the boys. Badassness is 70s BIG, weight lifted maybe not so much, but I could be wrong.

    @Maslow – I like from that article:

‘As people age, their ability to build muscle mass declines. The new study suggests that pumping muscles full of nuclei early in life could help stave off muscle loss with age. “This could be an argument for mandatory physical training in schools,”’

As if just generally not being a lazy brat isn’t enough reason to make PE mandatory in schools.

PR – enjoyed a PR PWO meal the other day with a large cheesesteak sub and a hotdog washed down with a big glass of milk after a good squat/press/DL session.

  11. I’m from Houston thus, I’m a Texans fan because but the Viks are a very very close second. Adrian Peterson he has sick speed and runs aggressively which I love to watch; also, my parents went to OU so… I enjoy watching Favre out gun his much younger opponents too, so I’m excited to see what this year has in store.

    Some PRs:
    1) Made it to a quarter century today-should be a good night of beer and meat! Probably through some whiskey in there as well…

    2) Bench 3×5 @ 230, Doing this later today but I know I’ll get it. It’s not new but it’s current, I have been battling back after a pinched nerve in my neck? shoulder? elbow? A while back, so I’m pumped.

    3) Shoes, got my Nike Romaleos on Wednesday, and can’t wait to use them today

  12. @iamperfet – I’m also a degenerate, maybe we should have a 5th and get a 70sbig league together, haha.

oh yea, and it should be noted on my PR PWO meal, this was at 7:30 AM

  13. Deadlift: 445×1

Just a kid out there having fun, chucking the football. A real gunslinger.

He’s fun to watch until he cripples his team with a pick. Or sexts you junks pics with his crocs as a backdrop.

  14. Haven’t posted in a while as I finally decided to move over to Texas Method. I did three weeks of that then had a week+ vacation (Driving PR: 3200+ miles on a rented minivan in 10 days while seeing Mt. Rushmore, Deadwood, Cody, Yellowstone, Grand Teton and Jackson Hole)

While on vacation I wore my 70’s Big shirt around Yellowstone and also a couple days later down around Jackson, WY to spread the good word. Met a cool Oly lifting dude that reads the site out in Moose and hope his broken toe is better. Also managed to sprain my ankle so that has slowed my return to lifting a bit. I’ve been slowly working my way back up to where I hope I can start my TM volume day tomorrow.

Wednesday I decided to test my bench. Most I’d ever done before was just under 260, but since I had done sets at 255 in the past couple months, I new I had more. Did 265 with no problem, then threw on 10 more and got 275 with just the smallest amount of struggle. I’m thinking on a good day I’ve got 280 or 285 in me. Given a couple more good months I’m hoping to hit 300.

  15. Had my first competition this past saturday at a WABDL sanctioned event. Competed raw.

    242 Bench
    462 Deadlift

Got all my lifts and had plenty of gas left in the tank.

This week has been shit, my volume day was awesome. So much energy! But intensity day (today) was shit. I felt weak and tired. I haven’t slept well the past 2 days nor have I eaten enough. Boy did I pay for it.

  16. Deadlift – 452×6
    Squat – 400×4

I, for one, am looking forward to Julius Peppers planting Favre on his whiney little crybaby ass, but then I am a Bears fan.

  17. I couldn’t in good conscience support a team with a sperm emblazoned on the sides of their helmet. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…

    @CBOS
I think the general rule around here is warm-up sans belt, then chuck it on for the work sets (maybe for the last warm-up if req’d). Technically, using a belt is still ‘raw’ and if you type in “belt” in the search function, you should find a couple of good posts regarding their use.

    @Phil

Nice work at your first meet, congrats. How did you enjoy it? Was there no bench event, or you just didn’t get video?

My PR this week was getting my wife started on her strength training program (w/ log, of course)! Don’t have bench or power rack yet (hopefully only a matter of weeks away), so things are a bit limited, but just working on her squat flexibility and teaching her DL and press so far. First time ever deadlifting she pulled 45kg :)
She seems keen and i will do my best to teach her and with my limited experience – any advice, Justin(or others)? Just as some background, she is 29, about 5’7″, never lifted before, aiming to lose some weight (i’ve of course told her this will come naturally if we stick to a pretty clean diet and regular training sessions)

  18. Does anyone know of a good website or whatever to learn about football? I’ve been following the news and will be watching games this season, but as an Aussie, it’s so much more technical than what i’m used to.

  19. Tied my dead lift PR of 455#. It went up so easy that I threw 470# on the bar for my next lift – failed miserably. Should have been smarter and gone for 460#. DUMBASS!

    Also got a volume Back Squat PR of 335# @ 1, 1, 1. 335# had been my 1RM about 4 months ago.

Is there a 70s Big Fantasy Football League? If so – I want in!

  20. I went ahead and did it up, I figured there were more degenrate fantasy footballers out there:

    through Yahoo!

    League ID #:ID# 522420
    password: squat

70s big related team names are not required but highly encouraged, as is trash talk and lifting talk

  21. @Stonewall

Thanks for that, answered a few questions.

    @Gant

That video is frickin’ hilarious! I wonder how the conversation went down when the producer was explaining to Brenkus how he was gonna take that hit… hahaha – good on him for doing it, though! 264lbs is one big motherfucker, for sure.
I heard the reason they got the dummy in for the second shot was because Brenkus just coughed up part of his spleen. Someone’s gonna be pissing blood tomorrow!

  22. Thanks Gant.
    Thanks Sapper09.
Will see if I can find my old belt at my parents house. It was a good one if I remember correctly.
The triple with 405 shocked me into thinking I should start wearing one. Was having grip issues but invested in some chalk. Going to pull it for 5 next time.

    Great PRs everyone posting!

On Brandon Jacobs: Christian Okoye comes to mind. These ultra-big backs have a short lifespan b/c they play so fucking hard. Five good years is better than none though so hopefully he keeps doing what he’s doing. The clock pretty much starts as of last year as he wasn’t featured back before with Tiki in there.

Hate the Giants but love to watch a big back truck downfield.

    Like Riggo…Crank that Diesel..Hawoooo….Hawoooo

  23. Sick for a week, missed 4 workouts. lost 40 pounds on squat and 15 on press and bench. screwed up my shoulder so now i cant row, chin up, or clean for probably 3-4 weeks. goddamn this is my worst nightmare

  24. Great write up on Brett Favre. I’ve been a fan since he first hit the NFL 20 years ago.

You’ve gotta love the Favre haters. More records than anyone in history, tougher than nails(most players leave a game when they get a concussion, Favre misses a few plays and then comes back to win the game), nice guy, family man, no scandals, yet there is no shortage of people who hate him.

Oh well, being hated that much just means he’s doing something right.

  25. OH HELL YES!

70sbig starting to talk about football, i’m all for it. my training camp(high school) starts in 3 days, i’m not sure why it’s so late but i’m excited.

maybe i’ll wear number 70 for 70s big, what do you think?

  26. BRENT WHAT ELSE ISN’T A SPORT?????????????????? BRENT WHAT ELSE ISN’T A SPORT????????????????? BRENT WHAT ELSE ISN’T A SPORT????????????????????????? BRENT IF FOOTBALL ISN’T A SPORT WHAT ELSE ISN’T A SPORT BRENT???????????????????????????

  27. also,

    Pr

    Bench 190x5x3
Clean 210x5x3 (should’ve been power cleans but technical problem didn’t get the pull high enough for a couple of reps to catch above parallel squat depth)
