I’m Impressed

Brent’s persona (personality?) is one that isn’t impressed by much. I can’t speak for Brent, but I was impressed by some lifts that occurred at the Junior Worlds in Olympic weightlifting.

In this video, Abti Aukadov snatches 160kg-165kg-170kg at 85kg. That’s pretty damn impressive, especially because he’s 17 years old, but I’m most impressed by his solid overhead position — it never wavers. His pulling motion is also very good. I’m impressed.

A 201kg clean and jerk to follow — these are huge numbers for a 17 year old. I’m impressed. I would expect him to make the trip to London in 2012. Kendrick Farris has his work cut out for him — let’s hope he keeps improving steadily as well!

The next impressive video is Leidy Solis, a Columbian lifter, clean and jerking 139kg at a 67.4kg body weight. I just want to clarify that 139kg is more than 99% of what you goobers can do (realistically it’s not that far away from me — I plan on pulling away though). That is just damn silly. Oh, and she’s 20 years old. I will have to agree with Brent in liking her intensity as she is coming out of the hole (his words, not mine). I’m impressed.

  1. Just for the record, if some of you non-Oly guys/gals wish there was more powerlifting footage, then chime in or hook me up with some sources.

I compete in Olympic weightlifting so I like to watch videos all the time (as does Brent). When I’m not running around in a speedo, reading, writing, lifting, or thinking about programming, I like to talk about Olympic weightlifting. If you’d like to see the bias shift, then I need a liaison to the sport or a website that will keep me updated. Oh, and I’m not impressed with gear.

  2. Motivation PR today:

    2. Leidy Solis is hardcore…she puts my ass to shame with O-lifts.

    1. 70’s Big t-shirt arrived today which means I have instantly grown stronger (does this count as gear? Wouldn’t want to disapoint).

PS. Brent if I submit a video would you be able to rate me coming out of the hole?

  3. I literally just watched the Leidy Solis video 9 times in a row. I just kept clicking on the 2 second mark each time she started to walk away.
Damn. I want my 135 pound jerk to look like that, forget kilos!
    Awesome.
And Brent, I hope you never talk about what I look like coming out of the hole, just for the record.

    ooooh-KAY

  4. i don’t know why or how this is being turned into a dirty joke but

1.) does it or does it not look like a max effort front squat as she recovers from the clean?

2.) is she or is she not obviously straining – WITH GREAT INTENSITY – to come out of the squat?

3.) am i or am i not going to basically have to kill everyone in this thread?

when i watch mma, i appreciate fighters who exhibit a lot of heart and stay in the pocket and keep fucking swinging even when they’re getting beat up, like Stephan Bonnar in his fast last card

when i observe training in the gym, i appreciate stuff like AC pressing 245lbs, stalling mid-way through his second rep, but coming back real fucking hardcore on his third to finish the set, or Chris stumbling on his 4th set of 5 with 490lbs low-bar back squats because his hamstrings relax at the bottom, then correcting that on his 5th set and fucking destroying it

and when i watch the oly lifts, i can definitely appreciate when someone has to pull a heavy clean that crashes on her, and then she has to struggle for the longest two or three seconds of her life to come out of the squat before finding the air and mental fortitude to stick the fuck out of the jerk

i think it is a valid observation, and i think you are all a bunch of trolls, so i am going home and taking my goddamn toys with me

Brent just got riled up by friendly trolls. This is a monumental day.

  5. i mean i say the same thing about Dmitry Klokov

    he’s an intense, theatrical lifter

he is not as strong as Aramnau, but he puts a lot of fucking heart into his lifts

i like seeing aggression and commitment to difficult tasks in the face of adversity, and i like seeing people rise to a challenge and pushing their ability to make shit happen

  6. Those youngins’ up there are badass. And yes, they lift more than me I’m sure.

I like Olympic lifting quite a bit, but I prefer powerlifting simply because it interest me more and I can do it at home with the equipment I’ve got. Unfortunately I have no real sources to contribute. I get most of the videos saved on my youtube account from here. And I also don’t care for “equipped” lifting.

  7. If we do get some cool videos, how do we let you know? Just post the link in a reply?

You can e-mail me or post it in the comments. I review most of the comments.

  8. Saw a quite impressive power lifting vid the other day, a 20 year old with a 1025kg/2255lb total.

Thought it was notable for the depth of the squats, below what I’ve often seen in other PL videos, and the absurdly easy deadlifts at the end, pulled with double overhand grip.

  9. For all your raw powerlifting needs
    http://www.youtube.com/konstantinovs

Also nearly any search of ‘Andrey Belyaev raw’ will produce unbelievable videos with as close to perfect form as exists.

    http://www.youtube.com/blaster018
is a powerlifter who routinely places well at raw unity.

youtube.com/spdcheese is my channel and every once in a while theres a mildly impressive deadlift, but its mostly just crappy squats.

I subscribe to Konstantinovs, but that’s about my only source right now.

  12. Dave H, or anyone else, regarding the video you posted, what happened on that guy’s 1st bench attempt? He got told down, touched, paused, given up command, the spotters never touched the bar, he got it up, was told to rack, and was given a “no lift”. Was it that slight momentary pause in the middle that did it?

  13. KrisG,
There can’t be any downward motion of the bar once the upward phase has started. It looks like he kinda bobbled there when he got stuck in the middle and the bar went back down slightly, and that’s my guess as to why it was a no lift.

  14. Has powerliftingwatch.com not already been mentioned?

Basically and one-stop-shop for powerlifting results, videos, etc.

I know of it. I should probably check it more often.

  15. I’d love to learn the O-lifts one day!

I watched each video a shitload of times. Such an impressive sport.

For now I’m a hack powerlifter though. I love it, and probably couldn’t handle learning both.

My youtube channel is http://www.youtube.com/vhguy –a mix of guitar playing and mediocre powerlifting!!

  16. First, some confessions. I know I’m a troll. I post only smart-ass comments and don’t really contribute to this awesome site. But I love lifting and 70sBig. It’s best if I don’t give lifting advice to anyone, since I don’t know what I’m doing. So a big “thank you” to the guys here that DO know what they’re doing and are willing to help the rest of us.

Second, did anyone else see the bodacious ta-tas that walked across the screen 20 sec into the Abti Aukadov C&J vid?
