Do’s and Don’ts Revisited

There’s gotta be some standards, for god’s sakes

This is a re-post of something I wrote back in October. A lot of you noobs may not have seen it, so I wanted to bring it to light. I plan on updating this list next Friday. You may make suggestions, but do not assume your suggestion is 70’s Big creed. Oh, and it is PR Friday. Post weight lifted, gained, or eaten plus all the other notables like ripping clothes, pressing females, and tossing children. Girls, I want to hear more out of you this time. After all, you can toss children too.

The epitome of 70’s Big

When the website went live, one of the first things that my friend Chris did was compile a list of things that would or would not exhibit what 70’s Big is all about. I share his concern. You see, 70’s Big has been alive for the better part of 2009. You, the reader, are at a disadvantage. You may not intuitively know what is acceptable.

Hell, you may open your tub of soy protein after gelling your hair while listening to Nickelback and sipping a smoothie. For god’s sakes, this is for your own good! Okay? I can’t have you going around talking to your friends about 70’s Big when you’re convincing someone that your shirt is fucshia with a Bud Light in your hand. And I’m pretty sure Rip would find the athleticism to backflip kick you in the jaw if you were convinced Crown Royal was the best kind of whiskey. Look, it’s just bad for my reputation if you talk about 70’s Big after shaving your chest, doing a few sets of curls and push-ups, then hitting up the bar with your favorite “whore-stink” cologne on.

No, I can’t have that. There has to be some standards, dammit.

DOs

DON’Ts

By no means is this list finalized or comprehensive. You’ve got a whole weekend to make suggestions. Choose them wisely…

  1. Ryan is only disappointed because I DL”ed more than he did (hows that stab) just kidding, Ryan did great even though he actually lost weight. Opps I don”t know if i was supposed to mention that.

  2. DO: Bacon & eggs
    DON”T: Milk and cereal

    DO: Heavy lifting
    DON”T: Cardio

    PB”s for the week:
    Back Squat 132.5kgx5x3
    Front Squat 145kgx1
    Snatch 96kg
    BW 92kg

Got a weightlifting comp in 6 weeks time. Do i cut to 85kg or lift in 94kg? Used to box before I started the milk and squats so the cut shouldn”t be too hard

  3. This is from Saturday – worked out with my friend”s coach Al in Worcester with some great lifters and set some PR”s:

    BW 6”1
    W 210 lbs

    Benched 285 (10 lb PR)
    Deadlifted 495 (70 LB PR!!)
Log Pressed 185 (185 lb PR – had never done it before haha)

Ate a ton of red meat and bacon (standard)

Let that be an example of what good coaching can do for ya! going to set new PR”s tommorrow for sure!

  4. I didn”t lose weight on purpose. Idk what happened that day. I GOMAD”ed everyday leadin up to it and somehow weighed in at 220. I”ve since recovered back to 230. I”m gonna say I was sick and didn”t know it and that explains my lackluster performance. Haha

  5. Been a busy week to due exams and such, so not so many PRs.

    DL 175*5

Clothing PR: Ripped a pair of rugby shorts right up the crack during training. And I”m in Germany, so I don”t know where the hell I”m going to buy a new pair.

Unfortunately I”ve lost some weight due to the start of the season. Working on that right now; I read in a Dave Tate article about soaking a pizza in olive oil. Lots of bonus calories and tastes like liquid sunshine. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  6. My PRs for the week:

    Military Press: 180X8
    Close-Grip Bench: 255X8

I”ll cast a vote for Black Sabbath to be part of 70s big because every “very strong” person I know listens to Sabbath and they arose in the 70s.

I”ll also cast a vote for pointy italian dress shoes to be on the NOT list.

I think we can all agree that large traps are 70s big. There is a very good poster on Ironmind

    http://ironmind-store.com/Backs-Are-to-Lifters-Poster/productinfo/PS%2DBATL/

That reads “Backs are to lifters what Biceps are to Bodybuilders.” Then it has a picture of some frankenstein-thick spinal erectors that are gloriously unsymmetrical to the rest of the back.

  7. Pressed 221 pretty easily for a PR

Ryan, good call on Shiner, too bad it”s hard to find up here in WA.

Miles, I might just be a pussy, but I am not down with shitting myself.

    Brent, damn good numbers man

  8. Comments on some of the don”ts…
    – Under Armour – Can”t tell you how much this pisses me off…
    – Smith Machines – Good call
    – Male models – Unless they”re Derek Zoolander
    – P90X – Somebody I saw on BB.com is running SS along with P90X–I was going to bash him, but not worth my time.

  9. So last night I officially registered for the PL meet at the CA State Games in San Diego on July 10.

This will be my first PL meet and it is taking place 5 days before my 50th birthday.

    Goals:
    1. Have fun!
    2. Dont bomb out

  10. Dear captain ron,
words cannot describe the hate I feel for you, you are like the bile that I throw up when I have already thrown up all the food in my stomach, you are like the gum on the bottom of my shoe that I cant get off, you”re like that douchebag at the gym who wears a wifebeater and does calf raises, get the fuck out of here

  11. Dear luc from canada, stop trying to do a phsycho analysis of the people on this website, I hate people who think that theyre so much better than everyone that they know anything and everything there is to know about them, everyone has their own reason for doing what they do, were not all the same fucking person

  12. Great list, I approve. Although I don”t think there”s anything wrong with running, as long as it”s for 400m or less and preferably done with a sled.

Squatted 365 for 3 doubles, which is definitely progress, but then I come here and remember how weak I am. Then pressed 150×5, also a PR, and did a bit of conditioning involving burpees and a weighted vest.

  13. Deadlift 371×5

Switched from lifting shoes (Adistars) back to flat shoes (Sambas) for deadlift. I was surprised how much stronger I felt.

Week 1 of the S&C program listed in the December post here.

Tue: Hill repeats 10×30 sec all out efforts. 1 min rest at bottom.

Fri: Thirty minute run with lots of hills.

Running with the extra thirty plus pounds was interesting.

  14. @ all

My bad guys. I changed my mind about these lists. Here”s my contribution.

Don”t: talk shit to people from the safety of the internet like bicurious george.

  15. @Captain Ronn

I think that “don”t” pretty much applies to everyone on every website everywhere.

Also, DO: Pantera. I know they”re from the ”90s, but I can”t train without them.

  16. @ bc george

I don”t want you to feel that way at all. This one brief exchange between us has not provided me with enough information to have formed an opinion about you. In fact, I didn”t say anything about you as a person only your actions.

  17. Two new PRs after missing 3 days of training (go figure):

    Snatch: 80kg
    Clean and Jerk: 90 kg

80kg snatch = bodyweight, I know I”m still a child but at least I”m a child who can snatch his bodyweight.
Much room to progress here, I started Olympic lifting 2 months ago. Getting harder, though. Next stop 100kg clean and jerk.

  18. Snatched 70kg earlier tonight. Nothing special, but a 3kg PR. Last week, PR”d on clean & jerk with 98kg. Bodyweight is probably floating around 170lbs… i.e. not enough.

  19. Squat: 385X5X3 (particularly proud of this accomplishment)
    Bench: 305X5X3
Press: was supposed to do tonight but gym was closing
    Deadlift: on reset

This was not the greatest training week for me. I only made it in twice due to a wacky work schedule this week, the time change, and a number of emergencies at home. So, I got in on Tuesday and Friday. Tuesday I squatted 380X5X3 and also deadlifted 465X5. Tonight I squatted 385X5X3 despite being under-fed and under-rested. I just kept thinking about the article “Do Hard things”. My last rep on the last set of squats was definitely a “Hail Mary” of sorts but I”m glad I pulled it out. I”m ready to eat my brains out and get lots of rest. I”m going to go in on Sunday to hit up my press that I didn”t get to do because the gym was closing on me and I will throw in some recovery squats. I plan to be back on track with my recovery by Tuesday.

  21. Press:
    1/1/10 – 5×3 @ 95
    3/18/10 – 5×3 @ 135
    Squat:
    1/1/10 – 5×3 @ 135
    3/18/10 – 5×3 @ 205

Squat and Deadlift started really low due to back surgery for herniated disk a few years ago, but they are coming along very nicely. Expect to set PRs on Bench and Deadlift tomorrow.

  22. @ Stacey

Yes, it does matter when you shit yourself. I”m terribly afraid some people may have mistaken that as encouragement to avoid the toilet at all times. Acceptable self-defecation is a complex matter, and perhaps I should have clarified. Shitting while squatting is perfectly acceptable and actually desirable. I actually have stools to the left and right of my toilet (wooden stools) so that I can get into a deep squat position to shit. I am completely unsure of this, but I believe I am training my CNS that squats and shitting go together, and I have actually had very good results on the Texas Method ever since I started doing this. Also, the good fellow StinkyNutts above me had two related entries in his list: get dirty and bathe occasionally. These bring us to the other reasonable time for relieving yourself (on yourself), which is any time you know you”ll have a pleasantly solid excrement. This usually occurs at about the same frequency I like to bathe (every 4th day), so it works perfectly. I stand up, lower my boxers for some room, and go. The tip touches first, and the rest of the log slowly curls into the underwear, like a man relaxing in a hammock. I then remove the stiff log and take my bath.

  23. I completely agree with Lynnlynn. Women being afraid of bulking up from lifting should definitely be in the “Don”t list.” It”s one of the dumbest misconceptions.

  24. Do:
    Guns
    Trucks
    Hard Work
    Mechanical aptitude
    Alpha Male
    Plaid
    Hard liquor

    Don”t:
    Cowardice
    Talk too much
    Ugly women
    Designer Clothes
    Care about pop culture
