Training for the Clydesdale Games

Chris and I decided to do Mike Jenkin’s Clydesdale Games June 15th in my home state of Connecticut. I’m running a bit low on leave though, so I’m only going to fly there Friday, compete Saturday, and return Sunday. The competition sounds pretty brutal, but I’m going to train hard for it the next three months. Here is the link in case you’re interested.

  1. Nice pulling dude! I’m just wondering, have you ever considered that maybe your slow lockout issue is because you start your pull with a pretty flexed lower back? I remember when we were talking at the Arnold you said you’ve rack pulled 700 and it was no problem, and it got me thinking that in a rack pull since you’re starting way higher of the floor, you can maintain a way better low back position from the beginning, so once you stand up you’re already locked out since your low back was already extended. When pulling from the floor it looks like you get the bar a couple inches from lockout and then have to extend the low back to finish the pull since you did the rest of the pull with a flexed lumbar.

I dunno, something to think about maybe. Maybe trying to maintain a good starting position from a deficit would have a better carryover than the rack pulls if the back position is the issue.

Adam, I don’t think you’re very far off. However, if you looked at my deadlift videos from 4-5 years ago my starting position has gone from very bad to just bad. After Nationals deficit pulls and pulls from mid shin are definitely possibilities. But for the next three months, I’m going to only pull off the floor, and see where I get. My experimentation thus far (1-2 years) has yielded mixed results, but I was happy with the 575×4 I pulled 5 weeks out, which is actually my first rep PR in well over a year. I appreciate the advice though, my deadlift is still definitely a work in progress (as are my overhead lifts, lol). -Mike
