PR Friday July 19

PR FRIDAY! How are you guys (and ladies) doing? How was your week?

A non-sober tank top pic from last year's Tucson seminar.

It’s been a quiet few weeks here while Justin settles into a rhythm, but here at 70’s Big, we believe in quality over quantity. If you missed last week’s post, Justin continued his series on manliness with Take Back The Tank Top, a manifesto on obligatory summer attire. This week, Marotta sent in a mob that he thought might help some people, and Mike reviewed Kelly Starrett’s new book.

In other news, Klokov continues to post videos at a reckless pace, including this gem with commentary:

“Today, on 18th of July, I woke up and asked myself: what part of my body doesn’t hurt yet? It turned out that shoulders didn’t. So now we’re going to destroy them. EVERYTHING must hurt.”

Mike, Brent, Chris, AC, Jacob Cloud and friends are at Raw Nationals this weekend in Florida, make sure to say Hi if you run into them.

Also, Marotta puts a new perspective on the protein shake:

how normal people make protein shakes

Notable comment of the week goes to mattalbright, in reference to Mike’s joke about leg presses.
mattalbright said:

If you feel like leg pressing after squats, squat more, then reconsider. Keep squatting until leg pressing would seem silly.

Welp, that’s all I got. If you guys have any questions about training, spots, or whatever else for Mike or Justin, post them here in the comments. They are kinda like 7-11: not always doing business, but always open. cya

  1. Myself and a buddy started up a barbell club out of the cf gym we coach at. We based it all on 70’s big philosophy. Lift big,
Eat well, get jacked, wear tanks and short shorts. We are just finished our 3rd week using a texas method approach. We saw pr’s by almost everyone last night! A bunch of experienced people as well as
new comers are living the life and seeing the rewards! Huge thanks to you all and amazing job to our members! These guys and girls will turn little pansy people to dust after we are done with them.

  2. Today I’ll be going for:
    300×5 squat (pr)
    210×5 bench (pr)

And whatever torture Mag/Ort has me crying through. It should be a good day.

    TM monday benching – 5×5 or 3×8?

  3. No PRs this week. Ever since I got back from my cruise my left knee has been incapable of bearing and weight during a squat (including bodyweight). I’ve tried a LAX ball, icing, heating pad, NSAIDs, etc. Only thing that seems to keep the pain DOWN is Tylenol but I still can’t exactly squat. Contemplating a trip to the doc.

This only happens when I leg press, which I did on the boat.

    • where is the pain? i had terrible patellar tendinitis with pain right above my knee cap. all those things u mentioned didn’t help me neither. check out mobilitywod. i wrapped one of those bands kstar always has in the episodes around my knee pretty tight and moved it thru the range of motion/ squatted. i did that like three times a day and all the pain disappeared in a couple of days.

      • Feels like on the right, under the knee cap. Also some tightness and tenderness behind the knee.

I’ve been eyeing those compression videos for a couple days. I don’t have a voodoo band…do you know if some an ace bandage or the like will work?

The only other thing I haven’t tried is joint distraction, which I’m going to give a go today.

        • i know kstar also talks about cutting up an old bike tire inner tube to use. i personally used a cheap set of bands from k-mart, it was just three lengths of rubber.

check out the mobilitywod video where he talks about terminal knee extension, and uses a jump stretch band to put the knee in traction, that one fixed my 11 year-old’s knee about six months ago

        • I’ve used thick ace bandages for stuff like this, but bike tubes only cost about 6 or 7 bucks. This was the first thing I thought of to recommend to you when I read your first post above.

          • Yeah I probably should have been using compression from day 1. It seems to help in the moment but I’m not sure how much carryover there is to correcting the issue overall.

I’m currently using hand wraps meant for working a bag but I’ll swing by a walmart or something and get a bike tire.

Just in your opinion is moderate compression over a long period of time better than lots of compression for just a couple of minutes?

  4. Hit some PR 3RMs this week, 480# on deads, and 402# squatting.

Running 5/3/1 and at this point every 5+ week is a new 5RM and every 3+ week is a new 3RM…it is always great to hit a PR.

  5. Stil getting stronger. I remember when this site started and I could barely total 1000. Several years and PR’s later, I totalled 1570 last Saturday at RPS Heatwave in Long Island, NY via 530/430/610…each being a meet PR at this bodyweight (269 lbs). Squat and Deadlift were both all time PR’s regardless of weight class. Left some gas in the tank both on squats and bench…so an even bigger total is in the making later this year. Good luck to the 70s big lifters competiting in USAPL Raw Nationals this weekend! Here’s a vid of my lifts:

  6. Had my first meet last weekend. Ended up lifting in the 90kg at 85.5 and managed to win with a 552.5kg total (1217)
    Sq: 192.5/424
    Bn: 132.5/292
    Dl: 227.5/501
    All were PRs

Had a blast and got to meet DaveN, utexas, and cloud, who were all really cool dudes. Also got to see Benedikt Magnusson, he was freakin massive… That’s about it.

  7. First post on here in a while. I’m currently elbow deep in Smolov Jr. and loving it. 6 more workouts and then I should absolutely crush my old bench PRs. looking for 275, which was unimaginable this spring, after 2 years of no real movement in my bench. Bodyweight is really high for me (230s), but bumping my bench is primary at the moment. Glad to have Justin back.

Book PR: purchased BASL yesterday after reading Mike’s review.

    • Smolov Jr is solid. I’ve tweaked it into an LP adding 5 lbs to each session every week and been going strong for about 6 weeks now. 7 weeks ago I only mustered up 195 on bench at a meet, yesterday I crushed it for 8 sets of 4.

  8. No PRs this week. After getting my calf issue worked out (which I still take care of) I was finally able to hit 90kg in the Snatch again for 2 sets of 2 this week. Very happy day for me.

  9. PR’s:
    DL 400 x 5
    Press 155 x 1

Also PR’ed on pain threshold from “quad smashing” thanks to KStarr and BASL. A roommate turning into a “superfriend” is a terrifying thing.

  10. hit an extremely easy 195 clean for a 5 lb pr. nothing insane but I definitely have more in. gonna retest my maxes soon so we’ll see what happens

  11. started doing a lot of strong man training lately so that’s where the pr’s come from
    130 lbs db push press
115 k stone trainer (2 in pvc pipe heavy duty collars and plates)
    100 k ‘klokov’ push press w/ axle
455 lbs axle(2.5 inch diameter) dead lift

  12. Only one PR this week:
    Bench: 150 kg (~ 331 lbs) x2
–> This was really nice because I got only 1 rep with 149 kg last week and 150 was a long-term goal for me.

Decided to take it easy this week concerning the other lifts because last week left me feeling completely crushed. Didn´t take a deload for a very long time so I figured this would be a good choice.

  13. Justin,

New to the site, but just purchased and read “Paleo for Lifters” and had question:
I travel 50% of the time and am always struggling with getting quality food. What protein bars do you recommend? Almost all are loaded with sugars and sweeteners…

    Thanks

    • Yikes, that’s a tough one. Protein bars are kind of all the same, so you’ll either have to find fancy ones online or just get the best option available at the time. Or just try and find meat products.

    • I’d probably go in a different direction imo. Think jerky, almonds, etc. Jerky is sort of like a “protein bar” if you think about it…

  14. My squat 5rm has dropped considerably, 355# 3 weeks ago, 315# today! im gonna have to go back to the drawing board and do a lil tweeking on the Texas Method. But I finally got a weekly PR!! 155# standing BB press!

  15. Long time lurker registering just to ask this.

What if I squat until leg pressing seems silly, then I crank out a few sets anyway? Sometimes I feel like I don’t want to be able to walk properly the next day…

No PRs this week, 5/3/1 deload week.

  16. anyone want to throw there opinion at me?
    am i overtraining?
i squat 4-5 times a week either performing:
    10 sets of 3 at 290
    10 sets of 2 at 305
    10 sets of 1 at 315
this is done with a 1rm of 345. am i overtraining?
i feel like im busting my ass but not making the gains i should be with all the time spent under the bar

    • 30 reps at 84%
      20 reps at 88%
      10 reps at 91%

It’s more work than what would be standard in a given week and I feel that it’s counter productive to increasing weight in the squat. There are a lot of other variables that would go into it, but yeah, not the most efficient use of your time.

  17. Leaving for DC on wednesday so I decided to max shit for fun.

    Weighed around 175lbs

Did a (slow and ugly) 405 low bar squat.
365 high bar that was clean as hell. Might have been able to go heavier.
    315 zercher pause squat: http://www.coachseye.com/E8in
    Klokov pressed 135×5, 155×1
Benched 255×1 easily (PR), and barely missed 275
And then I deadlifted 365×2, which I haven’t done in like 6 months, and I was 15-20lbs heavier then.
