PR FRIDAY

I’m not at home, so here is a quick post. Post your PR’s and training updates to comments. Also ask questions for next week’s Q&A.

Justin asked me to post a “good pic or video” to today’s post, so here you go:

First up is a video from the weightlifters at Northern Michigan University during their prep for the American Open. NMU is a US Olympic Education Center.

Next, we have a video taken by 70’s Big member Tbone of a few notable lifts at the American Open:

And finally, a friendly reminder from 70’s big member Paul Sousa to not bite the horses

hey look, I finally figured out how to embed stuff. Enjoy your weekend – smithb9

  1. It was a combination of an awesome week and a not so awesome week for me.

Awesome stuff (PR’s): 300 jerk from the blocks. My first time with 300 on the jerk. Will put it together for a 1st time 300+ c&J. Can’t wait.

Also, snatch of 240. That is a 5lb pr.

Squat 385×4 Couldn’t quite get the 5th rep. This was the 1st time my progress has stalled since starting TM. This was week 7 for me.
Press 165x3x2 Didn’t do my volume day on press so just did a sort of combination of vd/id. Will get back on track on monday.

Next week will be my last week of focusing solely on the squat and press and I will transition back to the snatch and c&j. I will continue the tm for squats, but I will be taking the pendlay approach of snatch/c&j, then squat during the workout . I am hoping to see 250/325 in the snatch/c&j respectively over the next couple of months.

My 8 weeks on tm has given me some awesome numbers that I only talked about over the last couple of years. Feels good to put in the work and see good results.

  2. Squat 340×3 I filmed myself and a major reality check. Depth was not good at all…basically just pushing my knees forward and bending at the waist.

Bench 225×2 Going for five, but whatever, still a PR. Finally 2 plate, so maybe I can leave high school soon

DL 365×3 Didn’t use enough chalk, grip slipped. I went for LMAO4plaet!!!1! but missed it.

Question: Who here lifts on a calorie deficit, and have you been able to make decent progress with TM while on the deficit? I was progressing really well with a 500 or so surplus and put on about 1 lb/week, but I started getting a little fat even by my standards. I’m considering upping the intensity and lowing the volume (i.e. ramp up to a 5RM on Monday and a 3RM on Friday, like Madcow) since I’m not confident in how well I can recover from the Monday 5×5 for TM.

  3. Got a reckless 5×445 back squat yesterday for my PR of the week. And by reckless I mean instead of my usual 5 lb increase I went with a crazy 10 lb increase from my previous PR. I know I know, neither reckless nor crazy but I felt good about it.

Heard a good prison rape joke lately?

    Got one for you…

I was performing heavy hip bridges (5×675)in an away from home LA FitLESS over the thanksgiving holiday. A little old lady came over to me lying under the bar and started telling me how foolish and reckless I was and how I was going to hurt myself. Without missing a beat I responded, “Mam, I just got out of the federal penitentiary and this was the best exercise I found to keep from getting raped.” She back peddled two steps, pivoted, turned, walked two steps and ran. Hehe. I got a chuckle out of it at least.

  4. No PR’s this week, worked at lighter %’s

    Squat 285 x 5
    Bench 240 x 5
    Deadlift 310 x 5

Also did a mobility wod every night this week for the first time in ever, so that counts for something. Made my hips feel much better (had some anterior hip pain earlier this month but it is now gone).

  5. 133 kg clean off low blocks this AM. Scratching and clawing my way closer to 300 before the end of the year.

169 kg back squat double today as well

  6. Squat 5×5 at 242 lbs. This is a 3, 5, and 5×5 PR, I’m waiting for the new year to set a new single.

I’ve just started bent over rowing, and RDLing, could someone pelase suggest what a sensible weight/rep scheme is for these? At the moment I’m going to add them to my 15, 5, 3 rep scheme (1 month on each) but no gym bros to compare weights with.

  7. Thank you sir, worked through them both at 60kg (so, uh, 135?ish). Rows felt pretty lumbar /ham intensive over and above the obvious rhomboid stuff to the point I don’t think I’ll go much higher for a while.

  8. Hey all,
Got myself a trainer this past week. Helping me with assistance work and keeping form good through the lifts. I felt like I had stalled at relatively light weights, so hopefully this will help. Also started at least logging my protein intake as a result of last weeks’ post. It’s not as high as recommended, but it’s not terribly low, I don’t think. At least, something is helping, ’cause I got a squat PR this week!

    Here’s last night’s work:
LBBS: doubles working up to 160# (PR)
Presses: doubles up to 80# (not a PR, but close)
    Deadlifts: doubles up to 205#

  9. Me and Tache’d Australian in work have arranged a Power Lifting comp this week in work. Its more of an opportunity to max out and reset on LP for 2013. Turns out there are 8 of us in and the tes is through the roof.

Unfortunately, my bench is shit so have no chance.

    Will update next week.

Oh, and i cut the sleeves off a Flannel shirt so i can wear it to the comp. We work for Sports brand so its gonna go down like a sack a shiiite.
