Fantasy Football

On the 70’s Big Facebook Fan Page we are organizing a 70’s Big Fantasy Football League. Go to this discussion and enter in where you live. Since each league really shouldn’t have more than 10 teams, they will be broken up according to region. If you don’t have Facebook, then just post here in the comments or e-mail me. Some time next week we’ll schedule the drafting after everyone is organized.

And if you haven’t liked the fan page, then…fuck.

Reader Appreciation Day

Here is an e-mail from Jay about how the site helped convince him to do a meet. He went 9/9 and had “one of the best experiences of (his) life”.

[spoiler show=”Show the e-mail” hide=”Hide the e-mail”]

Hey Justin,

I competed for the first time in USAPL Michigan’s Smitty’s Iron Works 7 on Saturday July 30th in the 198 (I weighed in at 185) RAW division.
All in all it was a great day. I am glad I decided to compete because it was truly one of the best experiences of my life. I went 9/9 and ended up with at best squat of 330, bench was 286 and deadlift was 440. The biggest thing I learned was to make bigger jumps after my opener. I have very little experience with true one rep maxes and it showed. I was far to conservative in the squat, I had plenty in the tank after 330 and should have gone bigger. It got a bit better on the bench making a 40lb jump after attempt #2 but again I should have done that after my opener. I think next time I will go for 300 because 286 went up without much ado. By the time the deadlift rolled around I had the attempt process down. I opened with 403, which is the last 5 rep max I did (well 405) jumped to 424 an all time PR and nailed it. Then for attempt 3 I went for a goal of mine which was to pull 200kg. Truthfully I did not think I could do it, but then I got really psyched up, told my self it was coming off the floor and there’s nothing else that matters and pulled that fucker! Putting that bar down after a successful final lift of my first competition was a great feeling of relief and excitement.

I found your site at a great time in my training career. Your insistence on competition as a focal point of and legitimizing factor to training hit home with me. As was all the meet recaps from Thunderthighs and Mike and others featured on your site. Thanks again and keep up the good work on 70sbig.com.

A fan,

Jay

Here’s a video of 23 year old Sam pulling a PR of 240kg in the 105kg class to qualify for the British Unequipped (which sounds like the UK’s Raw Nationals within IPF ruling). Well done, Sam.

PR Friday

Post your training PRs or updates to the comments. Good luck to Vince Urbank and all the other competitors at the America’s Strongest Man this weekend.
Here’s a video of Donny hitting his second attempt of 203kg at nationals a few weeks ago.

  1. Press PRs:
    1 x 105 lbs
5 x 90 lbs (I did this for fun after the 105 lbs)

    Because I am awesome.

Still training 6 days a week, and it is fabulous. I also decided not to drop back down to 69 kg right now because if I try to do that with my current programming, I will die, and that would not be awesome.

    Coaching PR:
My USAW club competed in their first meet on Saturday: the Charlotte Weightlifting Open. I had four lifters compete, and it was a first meet for all of them. One of my girls one Best Female Lifter because she is awesome. My six year old daughter also competed and snatched 11 kg and jerked 15 kg because she is awesome. Are you sensing a theme here?

Video of my daughter lifting at the meet because kids who lift are awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJlMyKZvPJI

Two reasons to come to North Carolina to hang out with me:
    1. NC Weightlifting Championship on September 10-11 in Winston-Salem. Allison Bishop and I will be in our bikinis running a dunk tank. Pure awesome: http://www.weightliftingevents.com
    2. USAW Level 1 cert with Glenn Pendlay on September 17-18 in Winston-Salem. Also awesome: http://secure.mycart.net/catalogs/catalog.asp?prodid=5208234&showprevnext=1

  2. PRs:
    Squat: 320 5×5
    Bench: 245 5×5
    Deadlift: 405×2
Learning: Read Arnold’s autobiography. It’s very inspiring and has so many excellent passages. Here is my favorite:

“The secret [to becoming the best at anything in life] is contained in a three-part formula I learned in the gym: self-confidence, a positive mental attitude, and honest hard work. Many people are aware fo these principles, but very few can put them into practice. Every day I hear someone say, ‘I’m too fat. I need to lose twenty-five pounds, but I can’t. I never seem to improve.’ I’d hate myself if I had that kind of attitude. If I were that weak…” –p. 30

Bodyweight: 192 lbs. (down 8 pounds in two months, all fat loss I assume because strength has improved)

Arms: circumference has increased another 1/2 inch. Nothing impressive, but it shows my focus on that is working.

I was pleased to get two volume PRs this week. Last Saturday I hit that deadlift with four plates, which was pleasing. My previous DL 1RM was in competition at 412.5, so this leads me to believe I could set a 1RM PR if I tried.

I’ve been training really hard the past couple weeks after a few weeks of disruptions due to work and camping trips. I’ve added extra assistance work in the quest to look stronger, so some of these sessions have just been brutal slogs. But I loved every minute of it. I’ve also reduced my calories down to 3000-3500 from abotu 5,000, in order to reduce bodyfat. It’s worked. I’ve even got visible abz now bro. I’ll be traveling again, staying at a hotel, next week. So I’ll make Saturday’s lift count, and then do what I can with what I assume with bee a dumbell gym at the hotel. I’ll also try to get to a real gym if I can.

Anyone know of a good gym in downtown San Antonio that I could go to once? I’ve got a Gold’s membership but it looks like the nearest one is a little too far from where I’ll be for work.

  3. I’m not really into equipped lifting but there aren’t too many opportunities to see meets on TV or online. There is a pro meet with $7500 as the prize. The Ultimate Multi Ply Bench Champion at The Baddest Bench at The Big Show in Rock Springs, Wyoming is tonight. You can watch it here: http://www.powerliftingwatch.com/node/19854

@yeshuareigns: I’m going to keep doing athletics until I die.

  4. Three PRs yesterday:
    Squat: 165lbs
    Snatch: 80lbs
    C+J: 85lbs

I hit the 80lb snatch after 3 misses. I was so excited I made some random dude high five me.

  5. Haven’t posted in awhile, mostly becuase I haven’t been hitting PRs. I started up GSLP a while ago. Getting to the fun part now, where the workouts are getting tougher. No PRs, besides for volume on the rep-out sets, but nothing worth posting I don’t think. GSLP is fun though, I’m enjoying it, and I’m mixing in the high-intensity, 10 min max cardio stuff, which is a nice change. When the time comes I’m confident I’ll hit PRs as my volume rep-out sets are feeling good with the heavier weights, so we’ll see.

Anyway, the real reason I’m posting is to high-jack Justin’s fantasy football. I started up a Yahoo! league last year with 10 fellow posters which I dominated, and would like to again. I think we can get more then 10 and wouldn’t mind hitting 20 or so. So, for those that aren’t facebook addicts and want to play on a real site, go to Yahoo! and sign up. The league ID# is: 383427 and the password is: squat. 70s BIG themed names are highly encouraged. Some examples from last year: Milk is Delicious, PR Sundays, and Mountainous Traps. First come, first serve, but I’d like to reserve spots for the guys that played last year, I’ve e-mailed those guys invites this morning. Do it up!

Don’ t know why you want to hijack it; I’m starting one where the leagues will be related. We have at least 33 to 35 people interested so far and they will be distributed among a few leagues. We don’t have a site picked out yet, but we’ll all decide that in the next week. Besides, if you have 20 guys in one league, that’ll suck.

  6. Pendlay & Co really cleaned up my mechanics at the USAW cert:

    20lb PR Snatch #165
    30lb PR C & J #225

Room to grow on both lifts (PR =/= 1rm)

I’ll be taking the Pendlay cert on the 14th. We’ll see if I can’t up those # more.

  7. I hit a bench PR of 295×1 at a bodyweight of 192. No squat or deadlift PRs, I had a minor back injury a while ago, had to lay off for a while, and i’m still regaining strength, but I hope to hit new ones soon!

  8. Squat: 340×5
    Dead:390×5

EASY PRs I think I could of tossed the bar off my back or floor at one of the skinny crossfit dudes working out in front of me.

  9. There’s a spectrum athletic club that is downtown downtown, and there’s a cool non globo called Joe’s gym just a few minutes drive from downtown. Google will show you the way.

  10. hit 175 for my volume day. i had been putting off adding weight to my volume day for what seemed like forever. finally wrapped my head around it. it was a sweet PR.

so i got that great stimulus and then my gym was closed on my intensity day. seriously.

did 10 dips. all singles, but i’ve never done more than 2 dips in one day before. went to the park and did them on the playground equipment. grip was too wide—not optimal for shoulder position and comfortable pushing, but that’s ok. when i head back to the gym and use the narrow set of bars it should be a breeze. yessssss.

  11. Bench: 245 x 6
    Squat: 285 x 7

So I’m running the GSLP and I want to start incorporating more back work. I’m thinking pendlay rows on mondays after squats, db shrugs/kroc rows on wednesdays after deadlifts, and RDL’s on fridays. What say you sir?

Typically I say just add in one or two movements to a program instead of lambasting the whole thing. I also like putting rows after deadlift (since it’s already heavy back work), and I like that you put RDLs on Friday (as opposed to Monday where they would interfere with the DL on Wednesday). DB Shrugs won’t really affect your training unless you’re being silly.

Maybe hold off on the Kroc rows since you’re adding so much stuff. Or do them on Friday after RDLs (then you’d ensure they wouldn’t harm the DL workout, but that depends on your upper back strength/musculature.

  12. @DJay actually I’m switching gyms and losing access to the neck harness at my old one. So I’m gonna replace it with shrugs and this. Though I may layer it in slowly to see how it goes.
