PR Friday

I have a few things to take care of before I get the rest of the post up. In the mean time, you may start posting your PR’s.

  1. @JoeSmash – Thanks. Yes, I’m competing in the Triad Barbell Open on February 26 in Winston-Salem. I’m hoping to qualify for Masters Worlds there so I can just get that out of the way and stop worrying about it. The qualifying total is well under my PRs, so unless I’m a fucking idiot, I should be fine. However, I most definitely AM a fucking idiot about jerks, so you never can tell. My snatch has been pretty consistent lately, and cleans are by far my best lift. I don’t think there are words to describe the stupidity of my jerk, though. I’m also doing a PL meet in April. I’m planning for that PL meet and at least 7 OL meets this year, including Worlds. Masters Worlds are in Cyprus, and I really need a vacation to Cyprus.

  2. BW 155:

    Deadlift 275 2×5. Slow but sure…
    BP 215 3×5.
    Clean 180 2×5

Thoughts on finding 1RM? Do I need to know this? I’m just doing a linear progression. I’m still fairly new to barbell training.

  3. @A.C. – Thanks for the inspiration. I still felt like shit from the flu today, but I didn’t have a fever, so I decided to train. I snatched to 2 lbs under my PR without a miss. I then had multiple failed PR attempts that got pretty fucking ugly by the end, but it was a good lesson in not being a pussy.

Ha it was reckless of me to do that. I have been on the couch for the past 3 days now and I am super sick. Only ate one meal today. Just be smart

    –A.C.

  4. @Don Stevenson

No, my name’s Adam. I live in Adelaide and been trying to help JP from Greyskull find some possible venues for his Australian workshops.

Your name popped up in a few searches, then when I saw you here I figured there were pretty good odds it was the same person!

    Where do you train now?

  5. @ Willie B.

    I’m that bad eh?
    All in time I hope.

I agree with the coach thing. I could give a sob story involving school, a lack of funds, time and feasibility generally, but I’ll save it. Regardless, I suspect I will be on my own in this endeavor for a while. I’ll still have a look around though.

  6. Sapper,

Shoot me an email and I can recommend a few places that might work in Sydney. You’ll be able to find my email address on my website if you search for my name.

These days I train at a gym near my house and I’m just about to start coaching OLY again out at Crossfit Sydney

  7. @Calfofwar

I could be wrong, mate, but i think Willie B might’ve been being a little sarcastic in that comment. As in, the fact that you are “new to barbell training”, yet you are cleaning a bit over bodyweight already(certainly not bad for a newcomer). Like i said, i could be wrong, but that’s how i read it. Keep up the good work!

  8. C&J 215lbs yesterday (+3kg PR). Not bad I guess.

@TBone If you can powerclean 158 then you can definitely clean more. Work on getting under it faster, maybe some heavy high-hang cleans.

  9. @smithb9 – Thanks, I know. The problem isn’t getting under it. The problem is getting out of the hole once I’m under it. My front squat is what limits my cleans, haha. My last max front squat was 170 lbs, and I hope that I’m at 180 lbs by now. But, this week was the first time since October that I’d attempted to clean more than 145 lbs.

  10. @Calfofwar —

I apologize as I didn’t mean to be sarcastic. You sound to be quite strong, and a coach could get your form dialed, and you could be looking at a double body weight clean in the not too distant future. You have the signs of a fair bit of explosive-ness

  11. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good gym in the DC area? A lady friend of mine wants to start lifting and I want to send her to someone that can teach her correctly.

  12. @Willie:
Thanks guy. I read it wrong! I really should find a coach…You are correct in this. I feel good about what I am doing, but it is impractical to think that I would be able to tell if I was screwing it up or not. An experienced person would be a heck of an asset. I’ve recently moved and have lost the help of a friend who was good at coaching. I’ll do my best to see what I can find.
    Thanks again.

  13. I ate 1kg of meat yesterday (protein PR!)

Did my first WoD since November too, was last with 17min35s (or 53?). Fuck aerobic.

WoD was 400m run, then 9-15-21 of burpees, box jumps and 25kg thrusters followed by another 400m run. Box jumps are my bane!

  14. been out of the gym for about a month. Holidays and new baby in January. What is the best way to get back into it? I was previously doing a 3×5 linear progression program and ended my bulking period. Now want to pick the strength training back up and want to start burning some fat.

  15. Sickness PR: two colds this month.

WTH is with all you boys training sick? For the love of god, if you train in a public gym, don’t go in sick. And if you are just a *little* sick and feeling reckless and go anyway, wash your damn hands.

I am pretty sure I’m picking up my germs at the gym because no one at work is sick. Your ability to recover is diminished even if you have just a little head cold, so you don’t lose that much by being considerate.

  16. @A.C. and @keysburg – Don’t worry. I wasn’t being reckless or inconsiderate. By the time I went to the gym to train, I had been to the doctor, I had been on Tamiflu for 3 days, I hadn’t had a fever for 2 days, and more importantly, I could actually get off the couch to train. Because I’d already spent several days on the couch sleeping and getting better. And, I’m the mom of two little kids. I wash my hands all the time. Otherwise, I’d have died of the plague a long time ago. My daugther’s school has flu, chicken pox, and lice going around right now. That’s life.

  17. First time posting here, cool site.

@ the guy with medial epicondylitis – I struggled with it for months, it is usually caused by the forearm flexing (“gooseneck”) muscles getting too tight and overpowering the muscles on top of your forearm. Lots of stretching and trigger point massage (find the trigger point close to your inner elbow and hammer away at it).

Be consistent, the pain once you get into the trigger point can be frightening but keep at it. Good luck. It is indeed one of the shittiest injuries known to man.

    PRs this week – None:

    Squat 345 x 10
    Bench 260 x 10
    Clean&Press 170 x 12
    DL tomorrow

All in lbs. Currently doing 5/3/1.
