“We are the future, Charles, not them!”

Starting Strength Seminar in Wichita Falls, TX
If you are on the quest to get 70’s Big or have considered coaching other people to get strong, then check out the new Starting Strength Seminar. You will learn the nitty gritty details on mechanics and anatomy, and then apply those lessons while coaching other people and getting coached while under the bar. There will be one at the Wichita Falls Athletic Club in Wichita Falls, Texas on February 26-28. This would be a good chance to train and learn at one of the best gyms in the country.

Some of you are actually doing what you’re supposed to: getting strong and not complaining. AC has been busy coaching people in getting strong at Georgia Southern University. His pal Pat has done well:

  1. Had a bad experience at them gym in Georgia Southern last night.
My friend ben and i where resting before our third bench press set when this “manager” or whatever the hell he was comes up to us and asks about the small circle chains we had put in the bar along with the regular weights (We go up 2.5 pounds every time we bench, but the gym does not provide micro weights so we add some chains that add up to 2.5 pounds to the bar, effectively keeping up the flow of progress). So we explain to him that were following a particular strength program that works with linear progression etc, and he tells us that our chains are prohibited and goes on saying that we should go up 5 pounds every time. We tell him that there””s no way that we could just add 5 pounds every time we bench (those days are in the past..). He insists, stating that perhaps we should have a spotter “help us out” in the last rep of every set, and that way we could go on adding 5 pounds each time (I could not believe it.. and this from a guy who said was in strength training for 4 years). We ask then about the possibilty of him ordering some micro weights for the gym (apparently he””s the one that makes the equipment orders)so that we can check-out at the front desk each time we need. He then mentions that he””s surprised that micro weights are needed since a lot females attend the gym and non had ever asked for them or something very similar to that. We tried to keep a straight face. So he told us to take the chains out and apparently was going to “look into” these microweights. I was pissed. Got that out of my chest.

As in all fitness gyms, they are idiots there. I worked in that facility for a few years.

  2. some serious effort there, Pat.

not trying to get nit picky there, but I may have noticed some lack of depth on some reps.

    great job nonetheless

Yes, AC is the coach and coincidentally has eye balls as well. He and I have talked about Pat and his form. You are welcome to post a video of yourself squatting whenever you would like.

  3. Gotta love the two kids over at the cable curl/pullup bar station or whatever it is, sneaking worried glances over to the platform like Pat is some kind of savage.

  4. No one needs to point out any form issues. I know exactly what Pat does when he squats and deadlifts. It”s all part of the learning process. It is not going to be perfect every time.

  5. Yeah, well Pat is a beast, and I wish I had such a dedicated and motivating group to workout with. A.C., good job getting these guys on the path…and a well done to all the guys who work hard with you.

    Pat you”re HUGE!

By the way, I was browsing through A.C.”s Vimeo account and came across this excellent tutorial. If anyone is having shoulder flexibility issues please watch this video for some excellent advice,

  6. 450 squat and 500 deadlift and still on starting strength? WOW
i gotta get my set up dialed in my deadlift, squat 265x3x5 and couldn”t manage to deadlift 270 for 5 reps the same day, wierd. i think i gotta get my hips higher

  7. I started SS Oct 30 and I weighed about 220. Before SS I was fairly strong but wasnt on any program at all. I just squated once or twice a week and pulled once a week. That day I weighed in at 256(I just ate a bunch of food though). But I am going to switch to Texas method soon when AC gives me the go ahead. Moday I did 452x5x3.

  8. In follow-up to yesterday””s weight guidelines for men, are there general weight guidelines for women too? I am currently doing SS and have increased my food intake since heavy lifting makes me hungry. But I was wondering if there were any guidelines.

Also, I am signed up for the new Starting Strength Seminar in May, and it would be great if there was a review of the new seminar posted on the website (after one has taken place of course).

Those were not weight guidelines. They were only parameters set so that people who don’t qualify will stop sending me stupid fucking e-mails when they actually need to just eat.

Females are instantly welcome to ask questions. A body weight goal would depend on height though. Feel free to e-mail me.

  9. strong work pat, i need to get my DL up there with you big guys, currently resetting to try and keep the lumbar locked in. will attempt to squat 405 for sets in the morning…

My favorite quote from Magneto. Ian McKellen gives it just the right amount of imperiousness and disdain. Hopefully the Magneto origins movie won”t be as cluttered and weird as Wolverine”s.

  11. Gustavo…you would not have this problem if you realized there are only 2 45 lb barbells in the RAC….the rest are 38 pounds..for instance if you did 250 one week the next week use the 38 pound bar 2 45s a 10 a 5 and a 2.5 on each side and suddenly you are pressing 252.5…..your in college do some math and stop complaining.

  12. Pat,

That”s some fricking strong stuff. It actually made me physically mad (in a motivational way) to see such a display of raw strength and realize how far I have to go to get anywhere close to you guys. I need to direct this anger under the bar.

  13. Hey yall thanks for the complements on my lifts. It kind of encourages me to train harder. And for all the skinner guys out their, keep up the hard work. I am not any kind of expert but training for any thing takes a lot of patience. There is nothing great than a smaller guy who gets huge by strength training (the all natural way). The more work you put into something the more you get out of it. That goes for anything in life.

  14. Oh yeah, Justin please let me know what was wrong with my form and what I need to do to fix them. AC told me a couple of things you pointed out but if there is anything else let me know please. Thanks

  15. @Justin: I was talking about ””A.C.””s Trip to Texas”” from 5 months ago. I””m pretty sure I have seen all the posts here, and I don””t remember that one.

    Apologies then, good sir.

  16. Finally created an account. This was my first week of working to become 70s big. Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life and neither is scrawny and weak.

  17. In regards to the Georgia Southern Facility – on my last day there around 3 years ago – I did a pull-up on that $100,000 tree.

post-script: the fact that a public university, let alone the work out facility, allowed any amount of money to be spent on a fake tree should instantly make you shit your pants.
