“All you got to do is listen”

Every Monday and Thursday we’ll post parts of the Mark Rippetoe interview. For those of you who don’t know, Rip is a barbell coach who originally learned under Bill Starr and has been coaching the lifts for about 30 years. Currently he writes as well as travels to coach at barbell seminars. You can learn about his work at The Aasgaard Company’s website.

Here is part two if the interview:

70’s Big Presents: Interview with Mark Rippetoe Pt. 2 from 70s Big on Vimeo.

We have quite a few people getting 70’s Big at the WFAC. Shelley and Melissa get stronger every week despite obscure injuries, Colton and Kyle are our young apprentices in strength, both of the Zachs are still trying to gain enough weight to be classified as adult males, Sammerr aims to be a decent Olympic lifter, Sam is always begged to eat more despite his strength to bodyweight ratio, and Kyle battles horrific anthropometry.

I work with a lot of people here, and they all aim to get stronger (and sometimes conditioned). What gym are you at? Who else do you know that is trying to get 70’s Big? We’d like to hear about it. Eventually we’ll make an archive of gyms that are conducive to being 70’s Big.

Edit: As of right now, you have to click the title of the post in order to comment. I”m currently working on this…

  1. I train at home, none of my close friends want to get 70s big. I do know someone else who is though, Steve (kittensmash), who is a coworker of mine and turned me onto this site.

  2. Good to see you here James. I train out of my garage. I got a couple good bars, bumpers, iron, squat rack, bench, chinning bar, and GHD. I got a few guys I coach the basic lifts to here, and my room mate is liking the idea of 70sBig thanks to the motivational pic on the About page here. My girlfriend also barbell trains here, but I don”t want her getting 70sBig. I don”t know of any strength training friendly gyms up here in WA, but what I got is simple, yet effective. Thanks to Rip I need to buy some more iron here soon.

  3. I”m a trainer at Potomac CrossFit in Arlington VA. We had Rip out to do a cert a while back and since then I have run two barbell seminars for our members who are interested in getting strong.

We are first and foremost a CF gym, though nearly all of our coaches preach the need for strength to improve overall conditioning and lower your times. We even had a feats of strength month in which we measured CF totals and Grace time at the beginning of the month and then a after a month of strength focused work.

We have a few of us drinking a gallon of milk a day (and gaining about 13 lbs in less than two weeks for me), but we”ll see what happens if I get 70”s Big.

At any rate, PCF is a place you can come to get 70”s Big. I”ll keep you updated. And if anyone on the site wants to stop by the gym, just let me know. We”ll do some squats.

  4. Hey Jacob,
I”m south of you, little town named Buckley. I know what you mean about the globos, there is one in town here that actually has bumpers and a lifting platform, but if you even set down your deads too hard they will kick you out. I actually had to laugh about that.

  5. I hope you guys can figure out 70s big gyms up in WA soon. I”ve only got 4 more weeks here in TX with Rip, and I need some where to continue my barbell journey.
